The time is June 22nd, 2009, and the T-Mobile G1 has been available for exactly eight months now. The device is currently the only Android phone available in the market, but it’s about to get some company. Today, T-Mobile will announce its second Android phone, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G.

The myTouch 3G is a huge improvement over the G1, with such enhancements as a headphone jack, better battery life and more internal memory. The phone is welcomed with open arms by the Android community, but it’ll become obsolete in just a few months when Motorola and Verizon announce the Droid.

While the myTouch 3G showed us that Google, HTC, and T-Mobile were committed to moving the Android platform forward, we were all more than glad to dump it for some Snapdragon-packing superphones.

Two years later, Android is everywhere. The platform has taken off faster than you can say “iDon’t multitask” and we’re no longer asking ourselves whether our Android phones will switch between apps smoothly — like back in the myTouch 3G days. Instead, we’re shooting and watching 3D video, outputting full-HD video to our TVs, and wondering how long it’ll be until we can run Crysis on our Android devices — hint: probably next year.

That’s how fast the mobile world has changed in two years. T-Mobile, on the other hand, hasn’t noticed this change yet. The carrier is still offering the same old, slow, and outdated myTouch 3G — for free though — that helped Android get its foot out the door. The phone is a relic by today’s standards, worthy of a statue at the Android Museum, but a relic nonetheless.

It’s not like T-Mobile doesn’t have any other cheap Android phone that it can give out for free. In fact, the carrier has four more Android phones on its lineup that it sells for free. The LG Optimus T is one of them, and it’s 10 times better than the myTouch 3G in every possible way. If you don’t feel like “Life’s Good”, you can still get the Motorola Defy, the Comet, or the Cliq XT.

So, why, T-Mobile, why are you still selling this piece of Android history? Please, just let the myTouch 3G die in peace so it can take its seat next to the G1 in Android heaven.

UPDATE: It looks like somebody at T-Mobile reads Android and Me. The myTouch 3G is no longer showing up on the carrier’s website. Thank you, T-Mobile, thank you.

Remember T-Mobile’s “No phones left behind” pledge? It came from Cole Brodman, CTO of T-Mobile, in a letter to employees that stated all the myTouch 3G phones would eventually receive Android 2.2. That happened back in July and we were beginning to wonder if it would ever happen, but a new leaked document confirms the rollout begins this week.

Starting tomorrow, a small group of the original myTouch 3G devices (1.0) will begin to see the Android 2.2 upgrade over the air. Like most OTA updates it will be staggered and run through October 25th, so don’t be upset if your phone doesn’t see it right away.

Unfortunately, only original myTouch 3G devices (1.0) will receive the update at this time. The myTouch 3G 3.5mm jack, myTouch Fender Limited Edition, and myTouch 3G Slide devices will receive Froyo at a later date.

We will be on the lookout for any reported sightings of the update and let you know when we obtain the official download link so you can manually install it. Drop us a line if the upgrade hits your myTouch 3G.

The T-Mobile myTouch 3G is the 2nd best selling Android phone in the United States, so hopefully this news will cheer a lot of you up. T-Mobile has just released some internal documents which states they plan to upgrade existing myTouch 3G phones (not just the Slide) to the latest software version, Android 2.2.

This is the good news I tweeted about back during Google I/O, but the official announcement never came until today. We expect that both the original myTouch 3G and newer myTouch 3G with 3.5 mm headset jack will both receive this upgrade. I saw and played with several Google Ions (aka HTC Magic) that are identical to the original myTouch 3G and they ran Android 2.2 great.

Earlier reports claimed the myTouch 3G would get Sense UI, but we are not so sure on that anymore. T-Mobile will be adding exclusive apps like Genius Button application and Faves Gallery, but it sounds like the phones will remain stock Android.

No information was provided on when this upgrade will occur other than “coming soon”. However, we know from previous leaks that T-Mobile has something really big planned for June 19th. We already knew it was related to the Slide, so there is a small possibility the Slide and existing myTouch owners could see a new software version on the same day.

For all the G1 owners out there, T-Mobile has made no official statements on the future of your phone. It’s technically possible for Android 2.1 to run on the device, but with every week that passes the chances grow slim that T-Mobile will actually update your phone. If you are desperate to hack your G1 and install Android 2.1 right now, we suggest taking a look at CyanogenMod.

Samsung Behold II owners will love the last line of document. T-Mobile says, “We hope this makes you as excited as it makes us. No phones left behind. That’s our pledge”.

It just makes sense. T-Mobile spent a ton of time and money customizing HTC’s Sense UI for their upcoming myTouch 3G Slide and they will be bringing it to multiple devices. Techland scored a meeting with Andrew Sherrard, the VP of Production Innovation for T-Mobile, who revealed that first generation myTouch 3G owners will soon get an upgrade that modifies the vanilla Android UI to match the updated UI found on the Slide (codenamed Espresso).

The myTouch 3G Slide launches in June, so expect an upgrade for the original myTouch 3G to follow that. For an in depth look at the new “Espresso” UI, check out our hands-on video of a leaked ROM. No mention was made of the G1′s future, but hackers have already been able to get the Espresso ROM working on their device so maybe T-Mobile will release the same upgrade.

This is an interesting turn of events because we always heard that Google was in charge of the software updates for the G1 and myTouch 3G. We assumed they would remain stock Android devices, but T-Mobile has decided to change direction and go with Sense UI. As long as the devices get upgraded, customers should be happy so T-Mobile can load whatever they want on their phones. Those users who prefer the vanilla Android experience, can always hack their device and load the latest CyanogenMod (or the thousand other custom ROMs) and still get Android 2.1.

Look for a public beta to be released tomorrow night.

If you have a hacked G1 or myTouch 3G, take note. Many developers have released custom ROMs based off Android 2.1 for the HTC Dream and Magic for awhile now, but most were not fully working. Devs had been waiting on updated hardware drivers which supported the Android 2.1 kernel and those were finally released earlier this month.

After several weeks of a lot of hard work, the team behind CyanogenMod is close to releasing a public beta of their latest ROM – version CM 5.0.7 Ds. The new ROM is finally using Android 2.1 and includes many of the enhancements found in the CyanogenMod for Nexus One.

As of this writing there are still a few bugs to work out, but look for a beta release tomorrow night.

Android 2.1 will fit onto the myTouch 3G (HTC Magic) with no problems, but it will not fit on the G1 (HTC Dream) without some modifications (damn those pesky storage limitations). G1 users must install the infamous DangerSPL which re-partitions the NAND flash inside the device. If you have never flashed the DangerSPL, the guys on the CyanogenMod forum are putting up a how-to guide.

First time hackers might just want to wait a few weeks and see what Google reveals at I/O on May 19-20. For all we know, Android 2.2 could magically appear for some first gen phones.

Our friend @kmobs is back with another video giving a quick walk through of the new test ROM on a G1. It looks like one of our shirts found its way to his desk.

Editors note: As we previously mentioned, we are finally bringing more contributors on board so we can provide our readers with more content. We are going to overhaul the site to improve the navigation, but we are getting some guys started early so we can hit the ground running. Our latest edition is Christopher Chavez who we had the pleasure of meeting at CES in Las Vegas. Christopher will be primarily doing videos that are related to hacks and whatever else he finds interesting.

As you may have noticed, our video contributors will be using their own YouTube accounts. We already have our main YouTube account, but we want our contributors to keep their own accounts so they can promote their own stuff and better interact with our readers. Make sure you subscribe to their YouTube accounts (and go comment and rate their vids) in order to get the latest updates.

From Christopher: So if you’re like me, lack of reception can really get on your nerves. Well, fear no more! Someone was able to get us this upgraded radio from someone’s something or other (LOL). Anyway, what this will do is give your phone a MEGA BOOST of reception! So now you will have more bars than you used to and even 3G where you only had Edge. Awesome right? So follow my vid and flash this already!

As always, be sure to make backups when performing any hacks on your Android phones. This is not for beginners.

New OTA for MT3G users to improve call performance only.

It looks like today might be the day the refreshed myTouch 3G with 3.5mm jack goes on sale. The phone was rumored to launch on February 10 and T-Mobile quietly listed it on their site early this morning.

This device is a clone of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition minus the Fender. New additions to the phone include a 3.5 mm headset jack and 288 MB of RAM (vs 192 MB of the original MT3G). The phone will also feature the Swype keyboard and doubleTwist.

No price point has been revealed, but the original myTouch 3G (now discontinued) is still going for $149 with a 2 year contract.

Update: The myTouch 3G will sell for $149 with 2 year contract or $249 with a 1 year agreement.

TmoNews also spotted that T-Mobile began rolling out a new OTA (version DMD64) at midnight for the myTouch 3G. This update will improve MyTouch user’s call performance only and does not include any additional feature enhancements.

Even though the new myTouch ships with Android 1.6, we expect it will be upgraded to Android 2.1 within the new couple of months. T-Mobile announced Android 2.1 for the Fender version of the phone so you can bet it will come to the refreshed version as well.

The original MT3G gets refreshed with some minor additions.

New internal T-Mobile documents confirm the myTouch 3G with 3.5mm jack (aka myTouch 1.2) will be available in limited quantities starting February 10. This device is a clone of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition minus the Fender. New additions to the phone include a 3.5 mm headset jack and 288 MB of RAM (vs 192 MB of the original MT3G). The new refresh of the myTouch 3G will replace the original MT3G black and white models.

The original myTouch 3G is still going for $149 (with 2 year agreement) and we expect a similar price for the refresh. The myTouch 3G with 3.5mm headset jack will ship with Android 1.6 and we expect T-Mobile will upgrade it to Android 2.1 in Q2 2010.

If you are a current T-Mobile looking to upgrade your phone, we suggest you wait a couple weeks and see what gets announced at the Mobile World Congress show. We expect HTC, Motorola, and Samsung will unveil new Android phones.

First images of the new T-Mobile myTouch v1.2 leak out.

It appears the rumors are true. TmoNews has received the first pictures of the refreshed myTouch 3G (aka myTouch 1.2). This device is a clone of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition minus the Fender.
The phone will ship with Android 1.6, but T-Mobile is planning an update to Android 2.1 this spring.

Rumors suggest the phone could launch as early as February 10, but no pricing information is available. The Fender myTouch retails for $179 (with 2yr contract) which is $30 more than the original, but it includes a 16 GB microSD card. We expect the refreshed myTouch will include a 4 GB microSD card and hopefully retail for $149 or less.

It now appears most first gen Android phones will receive Android 2.1.

T-Mobile customers who own a myTouch 3G should begin receiving an upgrade to Android 2.1 this spring, according to a Fender press release from earlier today. Other carriers like Rogers Wireless recently announced a similar upgrade to their HTC Magic (which is the same phone) so this news comes with little surprise, but this is the first time we have heard T-Mobile talk about it.

The last time we looked at first generation Android phones, T-Mobile was the only carrier that had not revealed their upgrade plans for all their devices. Since that time, Motorola has confirmed the CLIQ would receive Android 2.1.

We have contacted T-Mobile and are still waiting to learn the fate of the G1, which was the first Android phone ever launched. It appears the device will not be able to receive the update due to certain limitations, but maybe Google has a surprise for us.

Rogers Wireless announced that their HTC Dream (same as G1) would not be receiving Android 2.1 and began a special promotion to provide those customers with a new Android phone.
