PlayStation Suite has just gotten a step closer to becoming more relevant. Sony will be opening a beta version of the PlayStation Suite SDK, which will improve the lack-luster variety of games available. Now that Sony is in charge of its mobile department, the company is set to make some major improvements. And considering Sony’s past, gaming will definitely be in mind.

The Suite’s beta SDK will open up next month. There is already a beta SDK available, but it was only available to select content developers in the US, UK and Japan. This SDK beta will expand its horizons to the rest of the world, allowing more developers to create original content for PlayStation Certified devices once the official product is released.

The final SDK is set to be released “later this year” at a cost of $99. After that, we will start seeing more games coming to PlayStation Suite, leaving Crash Bandicoot in the past, again. Both major and small game developers will be able to take advantage of this, so we are expecting to see some good games coming. Especially since there is a probability that the PS Vita will also be able to access such content.

The most exciting part is the idea that we could be starting to see some much better games drop on Android. Currently, the Android Market has very few “console quality” games, while many devices could handle PSP and PS2 content. If Sony managed to get some PSP (or even PS Vita) games in there, the tables would turn very quickly.

Now let’s just hope that some good developers take part in this. Do you think this project will become a success? Could it grow enough to compete with Tegra Zone and GameCommand?

Show Press Release
Open Beta Version of SDK to be Released in April, Official Version to be Released Later This Year

TOKYO, March 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that it will release the open beta version of PlayStation®Suite SDK*(1) to content developers in April 2012 and the official version later this year. Through the introduction of these SDKs, SCE will offer a more streamlined content development environment for content developers — from large game development companies to small, independent shops — and further expand the world of PlayStation® to open operating system based portable devices.

In November 2011, SCE released the closed beta version of PlayStation®Suite SDK to limited content developers in Japan, United States and the United Kingdom. The upcoming open beta version incorporates their feedback and will dramatically enhance convenience and efficiency of the content development environment. The phased rollout of the open beta version will start in April 2012 free of charge and expand target countries beyond Japan, United States and the United Kingdom. Developers will also be able to conduct performance verification of their content developed with the open beta version on PlayStation®Vita.

SCE will also release the official version of PlayStation®Suite SDK at $99 US annually later this year, allowing content developers to have their content distributed through the PlayStation®Store*(2) on a commercial basis. Through the official version, content developers will also be able to seamlessly continue to develop content which was created with the open beta or the closed beta versions.

Furthermore, SCE will be adding content for PlayStation®Suite in Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Australia. The phased rollout of the update will start later this year. The phased rollout will include improving the PlayStation®Suite presence on PlayStation®Store for users who want to enjoy a variety of content with ease and convenience on their PlayStation™Certified devices. SCE will also deliver content created through the official version of PlayStation®Suite SDK after the necessary procedure is completed.

As of March 7, 2012, the line-up of PlayStation™Certified devices includes Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ acro, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ acro HD, Xperia™ S, Xperia™ ion*(3) from Sony Mobile Communications AB, and “Sony Tablet” S and “Sony Tablet” P from Sony Corporation. SCE will continue to further accelerate the expansion of PlayStation™Certified devices.
Through PlayStation®Suite, SCE will deploy various measures to support content developers in their business, and expand the PlayStation® entertainment experience on an open operating system.

*(1) Software Development Kit is a set of development tools and software libraries. Developers are able to obtain this SDK by signing a license agreement with SCE.
*(2) Users can download vast digital content including games through PlayStation Store for PS3, PSP, PS Vita and PS Certified devices.
*(3) Model name may vary by region.

With over 5 million downloads, this mind-reading keyboard is saving millions of keystrokes around the globe. This is all thanks to its unbelievable prediction and correction capabilities, which will now be available for all manufacturers thanks to the SDK that Swiftkey has just launched.

With this Software Developer Kit, manufacturers will be able to incorporate Swiftkey’s impressive typing technology to an abundance of devices and platforms. This is made possible through access to Swiftkey’s language engine. So we might soon see devices with native keyboards that can predict and correct as amazingly as Swiftkey X can.

As we are interacting with more devices, technology that accurately understands what a user is trying to say or do with their devices is vital. It only takes a cursory look at user groups to realize that typing is one of the biggest frustrations that people have on tablets and smartphones. The launch of our SDK will give OEMs access to better typing experience, with their own look and feel.Dr. Ben MedlockCTO of Swiftkey

As mentioned, this SDK supports pretty much all operating systems. Platforms and languages include the following:

Android

C++

iOS

JVM (Java, Scala)

Linux

Mac OS X

.NET (C#, VB)

QNX/BlackBerry 10

WebOS

Windows

Very soon, we might see Swiftkey technology embedded straight into devices. So stay tuned for more about this, as Swiftkey does happen to be a favorite for a great percentage of our readers. How many of you would like to see this technology embedded into all these platforms and devices?

Show Press Release
SwiftKey Launches SDK for Handset and Device Manufacturers

OEMs Can Integrate SwiftKey’s Powerful Language Technology Into Their Devices to Improve Core Typing Experience

Barcelona, Spain — February 27, 2012 – SwiftKey™ (http://www.swiftkey.net), the company behind the award-winning SwiftKey X keyboard for Android™ smartphones, is making the core language-engine technology that powers its app available to OEMs. The move will allow handset and device manufacturers to embed SwiftKey’s smart language technology into their own devices through a Software Development Kit (SDK).

SwiftKey X has already proven immensely popular as a stand-alone app. It has been downloaded more than five million times, making it one of the most popular paid for applications on the planet in its category. In addition, SwiftKey’s technology has been shortlisted for the Most Innovative App in this year’s GSMA Global Mobile Awards at Mobile World Congress.

The SDK enables tablet and handset manufacturers to offer cutting edge prediction and correction technology in their products, powered by SwiftKey’s Natural Language Processing language engine. OEMs can build SwiftKey’s core technology into their own keyboard and UI, to improve the core user experience of their devices. The SDK introduces a range of new features in addition to those currently available on SwiftKey X, with support for over 40 languages, including Arabic, Korean and Spanish.

Dr Ben Medlock, CTO of SwiftKey explains: “As we are interacting with more devices, technology that accurately understands what a user is trying to say or do with their devices is vital. It only takes a cursory look at user groups to realize that typing is one of the biggest frustrations that people have on tablets and smartphones. The launch of our SDK will give OEMs access to better typing experience, with their own look and feel.”

“The SDK will also enable other consumer technology devices, beyond the tablet and smartphone, to receive the benefits of our unique language engine. We have already seen interesting applications of our language engine in Smart TVs and assistive technology devices.”

SwiftKey SDK supports the following platforms and languages:

Android
C++
iOS
JVM (Java, Scala)
Linux
Mac OS X
.NET (C#, VB)
QNX/BlackBerry 10
WebOS
Windows

About SwiftKey
SwiftKey makes typing much easier on Android smartphones, replacing the touchscreen keyboard with one powered by smarter natural language technology. The app, which launched in beta in July 2010, understands how words work together to give much more accurate corrections and predictions than other keyboards. It also powerfully learns over time to make typing easier and even more accurate, and users can personalize it using Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, SMS or their blog posts.

To date SwiftKey has received more than five million downloads, saving users more than 30 billion keystrokes: equivalent to over 350 years spent typing.

TouchType Ltd, the company behind SwiftKey, was founded in August 2008 by Jon Reynolds, CEO, and Dr Ben Medlock, CTO, both Cambridge University graduates. With a growing team of over 30 people, the company is based in Southwark, London, UK.

It has finally happened, folks. The Menu button is officially dead. The Android team at Google just announced that Android no longer requires a dedicated Menu button. Of course, that doesn’t mean that some OEMs won’t try to stick it on their devices. But for all Google cares, the dedicated Menu button is a thing of the past. And in just a few months, all Google-approved Android devices will launch without it.

As some of you know, this plan to kill the Menu button was set in motion more than a year ago. It all started with the release of Honeycomb, which got rid of the Menu button on tablets — and most hardware buttons for that matter. However, it was unclear at the time if the same design would carry over to phones. Then the first Nexus 3 rumors started to arrive, and one thing in particular kept popping up: “No hardware buttons.”

After the release of Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus, it was quite clear that Google was trying its best to simplify the Android user experience. At the same time, Google introduced a new UI element called the Action Bar, which the company calls the “the most important structural element of an Android app.” The Action Bar — and its overflow button — replace the Menu button while providing a consistent look and experience across all Android apps. That is, if developers start using it.

That’s where today’s announcement comes is. Google is urging app developers to stop using the Menu button and adopt the Action Bar instead. The company provided some clear instructions on how to do this easily, and even reminded them about the existence of its Android Design website. There’s absolutely no doubt that Google wants all Android apps to adopt this new UI design — and fast.

Of course, there are some of you who won’t be happy about the Menu button passing away. Sadly, there’s nothing I can say to ease your pain. Google has made a crucial decision to simplify and unify the Android UI, and that means that the Menu button has to go — and take the Search button with it. As for developers, better get started on that Action Bar, pronto.

Those who are excited to start using their newly announced Samsung Galaxy Nexus devices (when they get them) will probably want apps to be completely optimized for the new operating system. Google has just released the SDK, so all developers can start taking advantage of those awesome new features.

One of the most important functions of Ice Cream Sandwich is that it unites phones and tablets of all sizes. Developers now have a unified platform, so it will be easier for them to make a good product across all form-factors. And, of course, it’s more user-friendly for the consumer.

The SDK is available straight from the Android Developers site, which you can find by clicking here. Once new apps start getting built from the ground up with Android 4.0′s features, things should start getting pretty fancy. As always, we’re interested in what our readers want. And, in this case, what the developers in our audience are planning.

What can you guys recommend to our beloved developer community? What apps and which features would you like to see optimized for this OS? If you happen to be a developer, would you mind giving us a preview/explanation of what might be coming in your apps?

Early this year Sony Computer Entertainment announced the PlayStation Suite program which was designed to deliver the world of PlayStation to Android based portable devices. So far we have seen three PlayStation Certified devices (Xperia Play, Sony Tablet S, Sony Tablet P) and that number should continue to increase now that Sony has announced their PlayStation Suite software development kit (SDK).

Through the PS Suite SDK, developers will be able to create games and content for PlayStation Certified devices and the upcoming PS Vita handheld system. By supporting development for multiple Android devices and PS Vita, developers will be able to save money and “efficiently create their content on one SDK and without having to create on several different SDKs.”

Detailed information about the PS Suite SDK and the download link will be announced soon at a dedicated PS Suite section on Sony’s official website.

This news might not have an immediate impact on Android users, but we should see more PlayStation titles (including some PS Vita games) coming to Android devices next year.

The early PS Vita games that have been previewed so far look amazing and they should run with no problems on the next generation of Android hardware. Sony’s PS Vita features a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, which is similar to NVIDIA’s upcoming Kal-El (Tegra 3). Since both of the Sony tablets utilized the Tegra 2 processor, I think it’s safe to assume we will see Tegra 3 inside several future PlayStation Certified devices.

Also announced was the addition of original PlayStation games coming to the PlayStation Store on PS Certified devices by the end of October. NVIDIA previously let it slip that PSOne classics like Wild Arms, Cool Boarders 2, Syphon Filter, and more were headed to Tegra devices this year. This service will start in nine countries including Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia with more countries to follow.

Which PlayStation titles (past, present, or future) would you like to play on your Android device?

Google showed off a new version of the Android Development Tools at I/O, but the company wasn’t ready to release it just yet. Well, they are now. Google just announced on its Android blog that the new ADT is all set to be enjoyed by developers.

If you think some of Android’s third-party apps look a little unpolished, you’ll be happy to know that this new version of the ADT focuses mostly on the Visual Layout Editor, with more than 20 features aimed specifically at making it easier for developers to design their apps. With new features like “Extract Style” and “Extract Include,” making your Android app look good is now easier than ever. There are many more features in this update, and you can see a list of them all right here.

Hopefully, this new version of the ADT will give Android apps a much-needed improvement in the UI department. Having said that, it is up to the developers to take advantage of these new tools–which we hope they will. After downloading the new ADT, you should watch the hour-long Google I/O session (embedded below) in which Android engineers show everything that’s new in this ADT.

Will Sony Ericsson unveil their Android phone next week?

Yesterday we learned that Sony Ericsson will make a special Android announcement next week and today we have spotted their Android SDK.

I wish I could download this.

I’m not registered as a developer with Sony Ericsson, so I am not able to download the file (but maybe one of our readers can help us out with that). If anyone was doubting that SE is about to unveil the new Xperia, I think this is a good sign. Keep your eyes peeled for November 3, 2009.

I also spotted this little demo video from the SE YouTube account. This is NOT an Android phone, but it gives you an idea of what you can expect from second generation Android phones which feature OpenGL ES 2.0.

Android 2.0 brings new developer APIs for sync, Bluetooth, and a few other areas. Using the new sync, account manager and contacts APIs, you can write applications to enable users to sync their devices to various contact sources.

One day after we called out Google for holding onto the Android 2.0 SDK, it magically appeared on their website. Developers can now grab the new SDK from the official Android site.

Hightlights of the Android 2.0 platform include:

Contacts and accounts

Multiple accounts can be added to a device for email and contact synchronization, including Exchange accounts. (Handset manufacturers can choose whether to include Exchange support in their devices.)

Developers can create sync adapters that provide synchronization with additional data sources.

Quick Contact for Android provides instant access to a contact’s information and communication modes. For example, a user can tap a contact photo and select to call, SMS, or email the person. Other applications such as Email, Messaging, and Calendar can also reveal the Quick Contact widget when you touch a contact photo or status icon.

Sync support for contacts from multiple data sources including Exchange. Handset manufacturers can choose whether or not to include Exchange support in their devices.

New way to hover on a person to see more info and select communication mode (for example, phone, SMS, email).

Email

Exchange support.

Combined inbox to browse email from multiple accounts in one page.

Messaging

Search functionality for all saved SMS and MMS messages.

Auto delete the oldest messages in a conversation when a defined limit is reached.

Camera

Built-in flash support

Digital zoom

Scene mode

White balance

Color effect

Macro focus

Android virtual keyboard

An improved keyboard layout to makes it easier to hit the correct characters and improve typing speed.

The framework’s multi-touch support ensures that key presses aren’t missed while typing rapidly with two fingers.

A smarter dictionary learns from word usage and automatically includes contact names as suggestions.

Browser

Refreshed UI with actionable browser URL bar enables users to directly tap the address bar for instant searches and navigation.

Bookmarks with web page thumbnails.

Support for double-tap zoom.

Support for HTML5:

Database API support, for client-side databases using SQL.

Application cache support, for offline applications.

Geolocation API support, to provide location information about the device.

<video>
tag support in fullscreen mode.

Calendar

Agenda view provides infinite scrolling.

Events indicate the attending status for each invitee.

Invite new guests to events.

Media Framework

Revamped graphics architecture for improved performance that enables better hardware acceleration.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth 2.1

New BT profiles: Object Push Profile (OPP) and Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP)

New Framework APIs

Android 2.0 includes several new developer APIs. For an overview of new APIs, see the Android 2.0 version notes.

For a complete report of all API changes, see the API Differences Report.
