Verizon will be the majority shareholder in the joint venture with a 65% ownership stake to Redbox’s 35%.

The service would provide both physical media (DVDs and Blu-Rays) and online streaming video to subscribers, though whether these would be lumped together or sold as separate packages (a la Netflix) has not yet been announced.

Also missing from this morning’s press release is any word on pricing. The cheapest physical plus streaming option on Netflix is $16 per month, and we don’t expect the Verizon-Redbox offering to differ much from that number. Verizon-Redbox will offer support for mobile devices, though whether or not non-Verizon branded devices will be able to get in on the action remains to be seen.

Though the announcement certainly brings up more questions than it answers, one thing’s for sure: by the end of the year, consumers will have yet another choice when it comes to their video media consumption. We’ll bring you more details of the Verizon-Redbox joint venture as new information becomes available.

Show Press Release

Verizon and Coinstar’s Redbox Form Joint Venture to Create New Consumer Choice for Video Entertainment

Joint Venture Will Offer the Best of Both Worlds – Physical and Digital – to All Consumers Nationwide

NEW YORK, Feb. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Verizon and Coinstar, Inc. today announced the formation of a joint venture that will create a new choice for quality- and value-conscious consumers seeking a simple and affordable way to access the video entertainment they crave. The venture’s services will offer all of the convenience, simplicity and value of Redbox® new release DVD and Blu-ray Disc® rentals combined with a new content-rich video on-demand streaming and download service from Verizon.

The joint venture plans to introduce the product portfolio in the second half of 2012. It will offer subscription services and more in an easy-to-use, flexible and affordable service that will allow all consumers across the U.S. to enjoy the new and popular entertainment they want, whenever they choose, using the media and devices they prefer. Additional brand and product information will be revealed in the coming months.

“When you consider the core elements the parties bring to this venture – our powerful brands; our national rental kiosk footprint; our anytime, anywhere network presence; and our mutual commitment to customer-focused innovation – it’s clear that Verizon and Redbox are a powerful entertainment team,” said Bob Mudge, president of Verizon consumer and mass business markets.

“Consumers rely on Redbox for the latest new release movies at a great value, and our joint venture with Verizon will enable us to bring them even more value by offering expanded content offerings and greater flexibility for how and when they enjoy entertainment,” said Paul Davis, chief executive officer of Coinstar, Inc. “This alliance is the result of a deliberate and strategic process to identify a partner who shares our commitment to delivering innovative solutions to consumers. We look forward to rolling out the shared benefits this venture will bring to consumers, retailers, and shareholders.”

This venture between Verizon and Redbox will create the kind of national multi-platform product that customers are demanding from video entertainment service providers. It will leverage Verizon’s industry-wide relationships with entertainment content providers, its advanced cloud computing technologies and state-of-the-art IP network infrastructure to distribute video on-demand content to its customers.

“The joint venture will combine the accessibility and value of Redbox with Verizon’s vision for a borderless lifestyle – where consumers easily accomplish what they want or need to do, on their terms, through the power of the network,” said Mudge. “Together, we are erasing old technology boundaries, freeing people to spontaneously enjoy the entertainment they want, whenever they choose, using the devices and media they prefer, at home or away.”

By offering instantly available online and mobile content with immediate access to physical media through rental kiosks, Verizon and Redbox will be uniquely positioned to deliver the best of both worlds – digital and physical – to consumers across the country.

The joint venture is a limited liability company with Verizon holding a 65 percent ownership share and Redbox holding a 35 percent ownership share at the outset.

Previously exclusive to the US, Canada and various parts of Latin America, our friends across the pond can now enjoy movies and TV shows streamed to their TV or internet connected device.

This launch also brings with it the Netflix Android application, so any Netflix users will also be able to stream movies and TV shows straight to their Android smartphones and tablets. The Netflix app is the same one enjoyed elsewhere around the world and includes recent UI improvements Netflix has made to the application.

If you live in the UK or Ireland and haven’t yet signed up for Netflix, be sure to head over to the Global Signup page to get your account started. Accounts start at £5.99 or €6.99, and usually Netflix offers a 14 or 30 day free trial. If you have signed up for the service, you’ll certainly want to head over to the Android Market and download the Netflix application.

Exactly three weeks ago, Hulu released its Android app to the Market. However, the app was only compatible with a handful of devices. Thankfully, the company is currently working to bring the popular service to more Android phones. Today it announced four more phones will allow you to enjoy watching TV shows and movies on the go.

Coincidentally ,all phones are made by HTC. And they are:

HTC EVO 4G

HTC Thunderbolt

T-Mobile’s myTouch 4G

T-Mobile’s G2

These four phones join the other six previously supported ones, bringing the total number of compatible phones to 10. If you’re the proud owner of one of these phones, you can head to the Android Market right now and download the Hulu app. However, you’ll need a Hulu Plus subscription to use it. But worry not, you can still sign up for a free one-week trial, or for a month if you use an .edu email address. If you do decide to join Hulu Plus, here’s everything you’ll be able to do with the Android app:

Watch all TV episodes available from Hulu

Watch full series runs or back seasons of classic shows like The X-Files, Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Law and Order

Search and browse for shows and videos and manage your queue directly from your supported Android device

Watch movies from Miramax and the Criterion Collection, including Pulp Fiction, The English Patient, Breathless, Modern Times and hundreds more

Resume play from where you left off on other Hulu Plus devices, including your computer and select mobile phones, tablets, internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players

Watch over WiFi, 3G and 4G

Do we have any Hulu Plus users here who are still waiting for Hulu to add support for their phones? What about those of you who have a supported phone? Do you use Hulu on your phone a lot? Or is it one of those things you’ve always wanted but once you have it you don’t use? Let us know in the comments below.

Completely out of left field, this morning Hulu released an official app for Android. The app is free to download but requires a Hulu Plus subscription to view most of the content. And the app will initially be available only for the following devices:

Nexus One

Nexus S

HTC Inspire 4G

Motorola Droid II

Motorola Droid X

Motorola Atrix

If you don’t have one of these devices, hang in there. Hulu said they “expect to add to the number of Android smartphones and will be making additional device announcements throughout the year.”

The app itself is everything you could ever want from a Hulu app. The company didn’t cut any corners for its Android app, and it shows. It comes with all the following features:

That last feature might be the most important of all. It’s good to see Hulu didn’t choose to make its app WiFi-only. Although I’m sure some carriers aren’t going to like that very much. For those of you on a tiered data plan, you might want to think twice before watching a full season of Arrested Development using your carrier’s wireless network.

If you have one of the devices I mentioned above and use Hulu on a daily basis, you can download the Hulu app right here. Then, come back and tell us everything about it. Do you like it or not? Is it worth 8 bucks a month? How’s the streaming quality? And most importantly, would you move to an unlimited wireless network (Sprint) to be able to consume as much data as you want?

Hallelujah! The official Netflix app for Android just popped up on the Android Market. Before you go rushing off to download the app, there’s something we need to tell you first. The app is only available for the following devices:

HTC Incredible with Android 2.2

HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2, 2.3

HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2

HTC G2 with Android 2.2

Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3

As someone who doesn’t own one of these devices, I truly feel your pain if you’re being left out of some movie-streaming goodness. The app has the kind of features you’d expect from a Netflix app, like:

Watch as often as you want.

Resume watching where you left off on your TV or computer.

Browse movies and manage your instant Queue right from your phone.

If you do have one of the aforementioned phones, you can go ahead and get the app from the Market. After that, come back here and tell us how we should have gotten an HTC phone.

UPDATE: Knowing that many people won’t be able to install this app, Netflix wants you to know that they’re working on it. The company said:

We are aggressively qualifying phones and look forward to expanding the list of phones on which the Netflix app will be supported. We anticipate that many of these technical challenges will be resolved in the coming months and that we will be able to provide a Netflix application that will work on a large majority of Android phones.Roma Defrom the product team at Netflix

One of the Hulu executives joined the Samsung keynote this afternoon and announced that a Hulu Android application will be coming soon to the Android Market. Also announced was that you will need a Hulu Plus subscription to actually be able to stream content onto your Android phone. This is great news for those of you who subscribe to the Hulu plus service, and might act as a springboard for Hulu-plus subscriptions among Android users.

No firm release date for the Hulu application was given. We will keep you updated once we get more launch details.

No huge surprise here as the folks from Sling Media were touting a summer launch of SlingPlayer Mobile for Android when we caught up with them at the gdgt live event in Austin, but according to information received by Phandroid earlier today the app is entering private beta right now.

The text of the email suggests that they are trying to fly under the radar with this one, but obviously that was an exercise in futility.

Hi ,

The wait is finally over! A new private beta is available for the SlingPlayer Mobile for Android. Since your beta profile is a good match for testing, you have the opportunity to join the new beta program.

Please note this is a special invitation so do not share this email or the below URL with anyone else. Also, do not mention you received an invitation, that the beta is starting, or anything that’s related. Due to the overwhelming demand for this program, we’d like to keep things as quiet as possible. Just think of it as a secret club! ;) SlingPlayer Mobile for Android Beta Invite

Sling’s ability to basically serve up all the services from your home system is certainly unique and I was a big fan and user on my old HTC Touch, but it will be interesting to see if the need to purchase separate hardware will prove too much of a deterrent for potential users considering all the streaming competition coming to Android this year.

By the end of this year some of the major contenders will join the fray.

A variety of streaming video options are available on Android today (Youtube, TV.com, Qik, Ustream, and others), but by the end of this year some of the major contenders will join the fray offering a huge boost to the amount of available mainstream content.

Netflix was the first to be outed two weeks ago, by their job search for an “Android Video Playback Expert.” Their release timeline is unknown, but one would hope that with said expert in tow they could get an app out there in the next 5-7 months and ideally they could incorporate it with our next player in the streaming game.

Boxee’s CEO, Avner Ronen, confirmed last week that an Android app is in the works, but if they want to be first to market they need to get moving as Dell’s leaked device roadmap has brought to light that serious competition is on its way before years end.

AT&T’s U-verse TV will be bringing some kind of service to you through the Looking Glass by November. Details basically couldn’t get lighter at the moment, but the screenshots of the device display an episode browser with a “U-verse” button prominently displayed along the top with “Home,” “Movies,” and “Shows.”

Hulu also had their intentions outed by the Dell leak as as one of the slides on the strikingly good looking Dell Thunder displays the Hulu logo and specifically states that you can “grab the latest shows from the integrated web video Hulu app.” The persistent rumors regarding Hulu going paid have ramped up again with the news that they are eying a $9.95/month subscription which would grant access to some older content than what is presently available; whether this app would carry any kind of fees along with it remains a mystery at the moment.

I haven’t seen this speculation hit elsewhere yet, but I think the screenshot that is being displayed on the Looking Glass is the Hulu app. If you check out the shows that are listed on there they include several long since canceled perennial Hulu favorites including; Firefly, Dead Like Me, and Arrested Development. Yes, I know that The Colbert Report isn’t on Hulu anymore, but chances are this slide was created before that was a reality. So non-AT&T users soak that screenshot in as you will likely be looking at the same thing just subtracting out the little “U-verse” button on the end.

With larger screen Android phones and tablets dropping fast and furious in the second half of the year it only makes sense that video services will pick up their game to meet what will certainly be a rising demand to watch content on these gorgeous new screens. It could be argued that the upcoming addition of Flash 10.1 to many Android devices will render some of these apps unnecessary, but the reality is that an application is almost certainly going to deliver a far better experience.

Other than the sheer coolness of having so much content available on demand, I think what I look forward to most is being able to basically cut the cord between my phone and my computer completely. The need to sync video over to my phone is one of the few remaining reasons that I ever have to break out the USB cable.

So which of the forthcoming services are you looking forward to the most? If your favorite hasn’t outed their Android intentions yet or isn’t listed here go ahead and give them a shout-out in comments.

Ustream releases beta of their new viewer application.

Ustream recently launched their broadcaster app for Android and now they have their beta viewer out. The free Ustream Viewer for Android enables you to watch live and recorded Ustream shows from your Android device while on the go.

I’ve had the chance to test it out and let’s just say the “beta” label if very fitting. Coincidentally, KISS will be hosting a live concert on Ustream tonight at 7 PM PST. I’m not exactly a huge KISS fan, but it is an interesting concept to broadcast live concerts directly to your pocket. It should be interesting if they can pull it off, but expect bugs (and frustration) when using the Android client.
