Infrared Sensor/Emitter on new Sony ZL

I am psyched about the prospect of having a phone/tablet with infrared. Imagine the remotes I could eliminate with that.

Here’s a really interesting article about it on Sony’s Developer Site
It’s an old technology but one that doesn’t go away. How many things are controlled with Infrared?

What app would you like to see with an IR sensor on your phone?

I could finally completely replace all controllers.

Oh, the fun that could be had messing with teachers. But more realistically, perhaps something like what NFC tags do now, except it can be pretty much anywhere in the room rather than specifically by a door or on a desk.

Pretty sure that the Sony S Tablet (or whatever its name was) had an IR transmitter in it to control your Sony products from your tablet.
According to my boss who bought one purely for that reason it is poorly executed on the tablet in software and doesn’t work for all his devices.

So I wouldn’t expect much from Sony on this

I personally think they should let IR die. It is terrible when they could just as easily implement a far superior bluetooth or wifi controller in a tv. What I think Sony should do is not include the IR and instead provide an accessory that goes over the IR reciever on the TV and converts it into a wifi or bluetooth signal to be controlled by the tablet or phone.

I hope the Infrared functionality has file transfer too, then I can try it with my old PDA and K800i!
