Kickstands, are they really that great?

I had the OG Evo 4G. (Before the name got as long as the epic touch…)
I have the Evo 3D. And I remember bemoaning when the 3D was announced. No kickstand? But I used it all the time! And it’s perfect for the 3D!

So my initial reaction was that the return of the kickstand was a great thing. But now I’m wondering, is it? As I thought back to my use of the kickstand on the OG Evo, it was handy. It was. Except… the speaker situation. Everytime I used the kickstand and set the phone down, I lost the ability to hear. I’d end up using index cards, paper, anything, to curve around the back of the Evo and redirect the sound towards me.

I could have worn headphones, but if the point was to show a video to others that was out.

So I’m left wondering, will it really be that great to have the kickstand back? Easy viewing with hard hearing? What do you think? What are your solutions to this problem? Do you even think it’s a problem?

They should just perforate the kickstand, I’m sure they could make it look cool and then no (or at least decreased) speaker muffling.

I don’t think it’s muffling, so much as the sound going the wrong direction. (Away from you, as opposed to towards you)

I’d say it’s a combination of both, with my Tbolt it was definitely muffled when the kickstand was in. If I was listening to music I’d put it facedown with the kickstand flipped out to maximize the volume.

Placing the speakers on the front would of course be preferable, but I can only assume there are technical issues with doing so at the moment considering virtually all phones place them on the back.

I think of them like this – Better to have and not need, than need and not have.
I can think of times when im watching movies and getting tired of finding something to lean my phone up against so i can watch in landscape mode.

And then theres the occasional “Oh cool, your phone has a kickstand?” response you get from non smartphone users, which is still nice I guess.

Case manufacturers should start making hard cases with kickstands built into them. I’ve never owned a phone with a kickstand, but trying to prop your phone up with a salt shaker at a restaurant when you want to play games in psx4droid with a PS3 controller isn’t easy, for example

if the devices get any bigger they will need a wall mount, nether-mind a kick stand :p

I think if they make it better than the thunderbolt kickstand they are useful. It makes it nice to watch a video or something and sit it down without having to hold the phone the entire time.

A kickstand that works in portrait mode sounds nice actually. My wife actually has a TB and I never noticed it could do that…
