Looking for a good Rugged Android Phone

Posted May 16, 2013 at 3:34 pm in Threads > Smartphones & Tablets

I am looking into getting a phone that can handle some abuse. I have an S3, but I am on my 3rd one because of my active lifestyle. I have tried several cases etc.. for it but I always manage to do something to it.

I know there are a few out there like the Kyocera Torque which looks promising. I am hoping some of you have had a chance to try some out and know what would be a good one. I am currently on sprint but am not beyond switching to another carrier if the phone is good.

My niece uses a Casio. Not particularly special in hardware or OS, but it survives her job in the field for hard and dirty use. http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/casio-g-zone-commando/4505-6452_7-34660420.html

I’m looking forward to the ruggedized s4, but I’m betting it’s getting the chemical waterproofing and dustproofing, not a physical upgrade of frame, seals and so on.

Did you try an Otterbox Defender case yet?

I use the Otterbox Commuter myself for my Note 2 and have had no problems whatsoever.

I have the case and really like it, but I am constantly out in the elements so water protection is a big issue. it does everything else really well though. I was hoping I could find a lifeproof case for my gs3 for a while but I have had no luck with any of the ones I have purchased which is leading me to a rugged phone instead of a standard phone with a rugged case.

S4 rugged is rumoured to be out soon, not sure if it will be waterproof tho, you’d need to do a little research.

This will give you something the other tough phones don’t do, high end hardware.

If waterproof is the only concern The new Sony does that, but doubt it’s tough.

Just saw some info on that phone! I am definitely interested.

It looks a very good solid device. To me I don’t know why they didn’t make the full S4 this tough.

Probably as they want the majority to be upgraded within 2 years, not still trucking on in 4. Still would be a great selling point and go a long way to strengthen their brand name.

    Try Motorola Defy.
It is waterproof up to 1 meter, has screen size and hardware on pair with HTC Desire and you can install newest Android on it (look at xda forums).

Try the Samsung Rugby LTE. It is military grade (what ever that is ..). I know that this is a Telus (Canadian site), but it does describe the phone.

Buy the phone you like the best and then wrap it in an OtterBox.

There are some reports of a new CAT branded rugged phone out too. only 800×400 screen, but Jelly Bean 4.1 and dual core ARM 9 chips.

I would try the samsung galaxy s4 active. Pretty high end specs and is wateproof and all of that.

redraider133 – I just saw a commercial for that phone. Going to have to take a serious look at is soon!
