[Opinion/Warning] Verizon Is Trying To Scare You Into A Tried Data Plan

Posted Dec 08, 2012 at 2:20 pm in Threads > Smartphones & Tablets

Anyone here still cling on to that unlimited data plan so you can tether your tablet, and not be a paranoid when updating apps? Yeah, me too… If you are one of the lucky few to still have unlimited you may have noticed the free text messages and emails being sent to you warning you of your Anytime Minuts usage (see below).

Dont know how to upload a personal photo to this thread so here is the link to a publicly shared photo on my G+:

Dont be fooled by Verizons sleasy tatcits to get you to jump ship to a tryed data plan where you will have unlimited anytime minutes and a puny 2GB of data to share with everyone else on your plan.

My next warning is more of a story that is actually quite funny.

My mom decided she wanted a smart phone last month so I took her to the vzw store to get her an upgrade. Once we finally decided on the Razor M the sales guy gave me his pitch on tried data (my brother and I are on the same plan and still have unlimited data). Here what he said:

“Looking at your account I can see that you used less than half a GB on average over the past three months. With tried data plan you will get unlimited anytime minutes and you wont ever reach your 2GB limit.”

Being the avid android user I am (Constantly flashing roms, trying new apps, uploading pics on the go, and so on) I knew this guys was full of shit. I quickly busted out my Galaxy S3 and pulled up my data usage in the setting to she him that in the current month I was already over 3GB. You can just imagine the look on his face as he quickly claimed there must be something wrong with the data bing pulled on the computer he was using.

So when you get the text message “Warnings” in increments of 25% for your minute usage, just ignore them. And if you go in to update someone else on your plan or to check out a phone be prepared to prove the sales guy or girl wrong.

Agreed. Verizon always pulls this every year. Last year was the “double your data to 4Gb” for a short time only! and the year before that was the last year you could get unlimited data because they hadn’t fully launched their LTE yet….so they didn’t realize what a cow that is on their network infrastructure.

Thanks for the heads up, I’ll wait for my text (delete) soon.

Not sure if off topic but since your are talking about unlimited data and tethering. For anyone that is an AT&T user and have unlimited data plan but don’t want to pay extra for the hotspot tethering plan…

You can download a program called FoxFi. You have to download from the main website enable “unknown sources” in the security section to install aftermarket apps.

It enables wifi hotspot tethering without having to root the device. It is the free version and you’ll have 5-30 minutes of use. You have to restart the connection (which is a quick process) if it looks like the website is not connecting. Or you can pay for the license key for the full version at Play store for about 5.99, if I remember correctly.

Good point! I have never paid for tethering, although I hardly ever use it. There is a better way to achieve this though if you are wiling to Root and Unlock your device then most custom roms come standard with a tethering app. All you have to do is select it in the quick action menu in the notification bar and you are good to go!

My family, whom is down in the states is in charge of my vzw plan has fell for this. We were on unlimited, then they call me and could hardly conjure words good enough to remotely help me understand why they jumped from unlimited to restricted. I, living in Alaska hardly can be on wifi(that is not also limited data) so my phone plan has been my lifeline.
Tldr: Vzw seems to have duped my family into jumping ship… Sleazy vzw

I could totally have seen my mom getting suckered into a tried data plan if I hadn’t gone with her that day. Is verizon the only one with decent service up there? T-mobil still has an unlimited plan and I think Sprint does too.

I got one of these messages too. Didn’t think anything malicious of it. I was more like, wow, I’ve used a lot of minutes this month, maybe I’ll use skype more or something..

    • Chris Lewis

Thats exactly what I have been doing lol! I have never once gone over my minuts and before tried data I never got usage warnings.

Woah, everyone be cool, not every sales rep is like this! I work for a Verizon Premium Retailer and in our store we do everything we can to make sure that you get the best plan for your money. I know some sales people can be sleazy, but don’t group us all together!

    • Chris Lewis

You are absolutely right and I apologize for making the assumption. This was not intended to slam on the actually sales people at verizon but rather the company and its way of doing business. I have heard the “your data usage is well below 2bg anyways” sales pitch more than one time, but again that isn’t you guys its your bosses telling what to say, and their bosses telling them and so on.
