[Poll] Has the Jelly Bean Expandable Notifications Improved Your Android Experience?

Posted Dec 17, 2012 at 10:06 am in Threads > Opinions

I consider the expandable Jelly Bean notifications, the most experience-improving feature of Android since the notification drawer itself.

It had cut my text message and particularly email (GMail) app usage by probably over half, since I can preview and dismiss messages directly from the notification drawer.

And with Android 4.1.2 introducing single-finger expansion and contraction of the notifications, they’re even easier to use.

Do you consider it as much of an improvement as well, or does it not make a difference to you?

I love them and could not go back like you said, because truly I get a bunch of spam or unimportant messages all the time and it is so much nicer to just swipe them away.

  • TheVoodoo

I agree. It has also cut down the open-preview-then-mark-as-unread process for me.

It let’s me preview an email without marking it as read, so that when I have more time later, I can read the full email.

  • TheVoodoo

It’s also quite good with calendar events, alarms and Google Plus notifications.

  • sandy105

    I haven’t used them much..

  • Dradien

For me, it just making using the phone more seamless and more intuitive. The more you can do from the home screen/where you’re at without leaving the activity you’re doing just improves the overall ‘feeling’ of the phone, in my opinion.

I still open the email apps even with the notifications. I do like the Google Now appointments and showing you directions and all.

  • kelltrash14

I like the idea of them, but haven’t used hardly at all. Gmail a few times, but I’m really waiting for google voice to support them. Then I’d be all over that.

  • TheVoodoo

Oh, I’m really hoping for Google Voice Jelly Bean Notification support, too. The stock messaging app, particularly in CM10.1 has some cool features such as “mark as read” from the notification drawer.

Don’t have the update yet, love this feature but it always annoys me I have to use two fingers to expand! Need to flash an update. :D
But yeah, definitely love this feature!

    • TheVoodoo

In 4.1.2+ you can use one or two fingers. You’ll like it when you get the update.

  • overclockthesun

Indispensable!. The Call and Messaging expanded notifications are a godsent.

  • JonJJon

Absolutely love them, when I saw them first time on the Google IO live stream I literally picked up my phone and went “awwwww” when I realised I didn’t have it already. They have made the notification experience far better, far more informative and as you said it allowd you to pick and choose what you want to open and see much more effiienctly.

Whatever else they can do to the notification pane, I don’t know, but if anything in the pipeline is as user friendly and enhancing as expandable notifications, I look forward to it!

  • TheVoodoo

Well put. I’m going to try very hard to go to Google I/O this year.

    • TheVoodoo

This IO bug got into me so badly that I started a whole thread of conversation about it.

I really hope I can get my hands on tickets.

      • JonJJon

I would love to go and my friend really wants to go too, he’s the coder of the two of us but I want to get into it and I love try to design UI’s and looks of the app ideas he comes up with. One day we will get there, one day, but until then I thank Google for producing such comprehensive videos posted online and live streaming, huge props to them for the way they make it so accessible to all who are interested :-D

Have the JB Notifications helped me? A LOT
But, what about those apps like Oficial Twitter, Whatsapp and others, that REFUSE to use the new notifications? It’s a shame the android version on these apps live by the shadow the iOS version is.

    JB notifications are really handy

    • kelltrash14

I second that, I really wish apps would jump on supporting this feature.

  • VerticalCobra

Love the notifications…would love it if I could delete them too! Cant with AOKP JB 4.1.2

  • heynomi4u

Love it. Just got my Nexus 4 in mail today but had some experience on my dad’s phone on the Galaxy Nexus. Really like it.

  • jaysond

there cool but sometimes the notification bar gets really crowded and jumble Ed up
other than that one thing it’s great!!!!!!

  • dacatalyst41

I like the fact that I can read through texts. THAT alone saves me a lot of time.

  • klcow92

yup, saves lots of time without opening the app
