Using WordPress on Google Android

Google Android is equipped with a powerful browser built from the WebKit open source project.  WordPress is one of the most popular open source publishing applications.  This site is currently powered by WordPress 2.7.1 and I own a T-Mobile HTC G1 so I wanted to test how these two open source projects interacted with each other.

Logging in to the admin panel was a breeze.  I was instantly able to view the full dashboard and interact with all the widgets.  Even with the small screen size, most basic functions are possible to perform on the phone.  I was able to administer comments, edit post, and publish new content.  However, you are not able to upload photos with the new built in image loader since it utilizes Flash.  The new post page also has problems with the screen size as it loads different widgets on top of each other.

Currently there is no official WordPress client for Android.  I did find one for the iPhone so I can only hope that one will be developed for Android.  A quick search on the Android Market netted two results: PostBot and wpToGo.  Both of these apps use the XML-RPC protocol so you will need to make sure you enable this feature on your blog.  It can be found in Settings > Writing > XML-RPC.

Both clients offer similar features including the ability to upload photos which is a plus.  PostBot even allows you to manage several blogs at the same time by allowing you to switch between different profiles.  I played around with each client and they worked, but I don’t think I will be using either to update this site.  They are great for simple posting, but lack many of the features found in the full web client.  Also if you are using a theme with a custom post page, you will not be able to access certain options.

Overall I was satisfied with the current options available to me via Android.  Using the core browser, I can peform most of the admin functions with a few finger taps.  Posting articles with multiple images and thumbnails does pose problems, but this could be corrected with a new mobile UI.  I look forward to see what the community comes up with and I will be following the two clients for further development.

Great post! I bought the HTC Hero last week and only just set up my blog (again … long story). I’ve decided to go with the P2 Theme that WordPress built and it works beautifully (as beautiful goes) with my HTC – only posted about it last night.

HTC have just released an update to the OS yesterday which I’ve yet to install. Apparently speeds things up greatly so looking forward to more posting on the move!

There is a WordPress for Android app now, and it’s on the Market., Works brilliantly for me – so easy, and it’s quite nice to push posts using mobile without publishing them, so I can review them when I’m at a desktop machine.

Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything. But think of if you added some great photos or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and videos, this site could undeniably be one of the best in its niche. Superb blog!

Hey Mate, I am sharing with fellow WP users one of the most powerful tools I have come across for getting your blog to the top of the rankings. This simple plugin once installed will auto post any published article on your blog to 100s of bookmarking sites instantly. It is so simple yet so effective that you will start to see results in just days. This is the single most important WP Plugin you can get if you are serious about making money through web traffic. Either way ask yourself, what would I be able to do with the extra money this targeted traffic would provide? Enjoy mate!

I own a Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1 and the Android browser is an epic fail when it comes to WordPress. You cannot click the “insert photo” button when trying to upload a photo, you cannot click the radio buttons for left, center, or right. There are so many things you cannot do in WordPress that makes Android an utter fail.

Use the WordPress app they say, why? I’m not using a cell phone with a tiny screen, I’m using a tablet that’s more like a laptop. But since the native Android browser us useless I installed the Android cell phone WordPress app which is even worse than the browser. I can see where someone on a cell phone might like it, but it’s even more crippled that the native Android browser.

I am beginning to think I am the only WordPress blogger who is using, or attempting to use their tablet to blog, because no one else seems to notice WordPress is severely crippled when accessed via the Android browser. Keep in mind my blog is a bit more complex than your typical “see my and my drunk pals shot gun beer” blog.

Anyhow…Do I sound cranky or what?? :-) Well to make matters worse I keep seeing Android related blogs talk up Android and WordPress and I’m wondering a) are they high b) have they even attempted to use it c) what are they smoking and why aren’t they sharing with me?

Android and WordPress is an epic and utter fail, we need to start admitting this.

The app is good but still, speed matters a lot. You can’t try stuff on mobile or tablet. Like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=treline.honey.myloveiszombie
