Cellular South was the first regional carrier in the United States to pledge support for Android and today they are unveiling their first Android handset. The redesigned HTC Hero will be first Android phone available for the gulf coast network. No price point or launch date have been officially announced, but the phone is expected to go on sale later this year.
Android fans will be happy to hear that Cellular South will offer the full Google experience on their phones. This includes the Android Market and all other Google applications for Android. Cellular South will also include their own Discover Center software which provides one-click access to their revolutionary Text for Help feature.
It will be interesting to see what calling and data plans are available for the Hero when it launches. Cellular South currently offers smartphone plans as cheap as $49.99 which include 500 minutes and unlimited web. If a similar plan is offered for the Hero, it would be the cheapest calling and data plan for an Android phone on any American carrier.
