Firefox Mobile a.k.a. Fennec schedules a date with Android

We have known that Mobile Firefox was coming to Android since October, however, even as it launched on the N900 in December we were not offered any new information on when our little green friend would get his turn. We saw the browser taking its fledgling steps on Android a couple weeks ago (while thumbing its nose at the iPhone), but still couldn’t put pen to paper on a date.

The waiting (well, the waiting for a date to wait for) is finally over. In an interview with TechRadar earlier today, Mozilla’s VP of Mobiles confirmed that we can expect Fennec to arrive on Android later this year. Obviously this leaves them quite a bit of wiggle room on the exact timing and as they indicated just a couple weeks ago that they were a ways from a usable alpha release, we can reasonably assume that a Q4 2010 release of the final product is the most likely.

“It’s a modern OS, and it’s a great fit with us. It’s the type of platform that has a high affinity with the early adopter, and it’s seen a lot of uptake.”Jay Sullivan VP of Mobiles for Mozilla

So between Skyfire, Opera Mobile 10, and now Fennec all coming to Android this year; which browser are you the most excited to get your hands on?

    Dear Sean,
Tell me something I don’t know lol, I think we all knew it would be out “this year”. Its not dated yet.

We all thought it would be out this year. Can you agree that thinking and knowing are different?

Considering the project still hasn’t hit an alpha stage it was hardly out of the question that it could get pushed to a Q1 2011 release.

i know, i was just messin. it probly wont hit till the very end of this year, i dont think Q1 11′ but maybe.

I would highly doubt they would let it slip that far. With all the competition landing this year I imagine they will push to get it out by September/October.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and have a beta to play with this summer.

I’m excited for Mozilla’s Fennec. It offers extension support and syncing with bookmarks. I like Opera’s speed, too. So I’ll check both of these browsers out.

Right now i’m more excited for opera. I just feel like they make the best mobile experience, and mozilla hasn’t really shown someone amazing on a mobile platform.

I find it very hard to get excited about a product coming out at the end of the year..

This suck balls nobody should have to wait long Firefox moblie
We got flash coming this month and who wants to wait for December.

Im more excited about the Firefox browser than Opera. Opera is fast i admit but not as reliable. And Skyfire compresses webpages to be faster but affects the quality of images which makes the experience poop. Lol Firefox on the other hand is reliable, has decent speed and doesn’t sacrifice quality to obtain it. :-)

It really depenz on the functionality of the browser… if it’s alot better than Skyfire or Opera, then I’ll use it. Anyone used/tested Fennec yet?
