8 Android phones will get FroYo early thanks to CyanogenMod

Now that the Android 2.2 source code is available, the development community can begin to tear it apart and cook up some custom ROMs for those users with rooted (hacked) phones. The team behind the popular aftermarket firmware distribution CyanogenMod is already hard at work and they are racing to get Android 2.2 on as many devices as possible.

CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik recently tweeted that they plan to target up to eight separate Android phones for their next version (CM6) which is built from the Android 2.2 source. No release date has been provided, but you can sure bet it will be out before the “late summer” target of new phones like the Droid X.

Hacking your Android phone might not appeal to most users, but for some this could be their only taste of FroYo. It is widely expected that the first Android phone (the G1) will not receive Android 2.1, but T-Mobile has yet to officially put the phone to rest.

Target devices for CyanogenMod 6 Froyo include:

  • HTC Nexus One
  • HTC Desire
  • HTC Dream (G1)
  • HTC Magic (myTouch 3G)
  • HTC myTouch 3G Slide
  • HTC EVO 4G
  • HTC Hero (CDMA)
  • Motorola Droid

I know, we’re always pushed outside the loop. Hopefully SDX will come though and give us the 2.2 love we can’t get from anywhere else

You had best not be complaining about not getting 2.2 sooner rather than later?
      NOTE: I’m a G1 owner patiently waiting for CM6. ;-)

Why is my HTC Legend not on the list!! Neither did HTC mention Legend on its update list. :( HTC is ignoring Legend. It leaves me with very few options.

    • http://Website schpinn

AFAIK, Cyanogen supports only phones he owns, and he doesn’t own a Legend. Damn shame, if you ask me :)..

I don’t know man, I like Bugless Beast better than Cyanogen, no disrespect to Cyanogen. That guy is pure awesome in my book and he deserves a lot of credit for his many accomplishments.

Pete’s Bugless Beast is definitely worth checking out if you’ve got a Droid/Milestone.

CyanogenMod announced support for G1 in version 6 “and I ji##ed in my pants.”

    What about the Incredible??

  • http://Website Jus10o

Just port it over from the cdma Hero like yall do with the rest of our roms.

According to the Android Developers Blogpost, you can already compile 2.2 for the G1 (or the Dream, anyhow). So if T-Mobile really got with it, we could see that released for the G1 in no time.

What about the i1? WTH is with this new phone shipping with ye olde 1.5? It desperately needs a kick up to 2.2.

  • http://Website lithium98

Thanks to the guys at Cyanogenmod, including all the people who put their phones on the line to test the experimental builds (I wonder how many people have a brand new paper weight sitting on their desk right now?), the G1 is still one of the best Android phones out there. I’m still rockin’ my G1 and will be until we see a true successor. Here’s to hoping they rename that new Android Sidekick the “G2″.

Why not for the GSM Hero?

i guess the guys from Cyanogen doesn’t like the Heroes

No love for the Legend? I’d think it’d be relatively simple for the legend as it is similar to the Desire and has no tight hardware restriction like Hero, Magic, etc.
