Android 2.2 source code released, updates coming this summer

Just as promised, Google has released the source code for the upcoming Android 2.2 FroYo release. Andy Rubin revealed the news during today’s Droid X event and anyone can freely download the source now.

Because Google just released the source code, it could be several more months before some devices see Android 2.2. As Andy Rubin put it, “We just open-sourced it today. That’s when everybody says, ‘Go!’. That just happened today”.

Rumors had suggested the Droid X might ship with Android 2.2, but it will launch with Android 2.1 and receive an over the air update in “late summer”.

Phones that are expected to receive Android 2.2 include the Motorola Droid X, Motorola Droid 2, Motorla Droid, Motorola Milestone, Dell Streak, Google Nexus One, HTC EVO, HTC Incredible, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S, myTouch 3G, myTouch 3G Slide, and others.

So much for the “Spring” release of 2.2 for MT3G. I’m stuck with T-mobile for another year, even though their service is pretty good, and their plans are also great, especially with Verizon and AT&T ditching their unlimited plans, their updates and news for consumers are really lacking compared to the other two. I waited when I first heard that, at the time, 2.1 was going to come out for the MyTouch 3G in spring with Sense UI, continued to wait after hearing the news of 2.2 instead coming to the MT3G. Now its officially summer and I’m getting slightly tired of waiting. I’m patient but the fact that T-Mobile has yet to give us a solid date is pretty torturing.

I was thinking about buying a new phone, from T-mobile of course since I’m still under contact but the only one I seem to really be interested in is the MyTouch 3G Slide. Even then, the updates and news may also be slow with that phone. Decisions and Waiting, a hard pair to deal with together.

If only T-mobile updates as often as HTC makes a new phone, everything would be perfect.

We’re all so dumb. Articles come out every few days promising us updates for our phones, which, although exciting, is almost always a lie. There are no dates, no promises. Apple does almost nothing better than Android, but at least they give a date and stick with it. Great, now I feel dirty after saying something good about Apple…

Apple inc. Is the shit you Gotta hand it to them computers are amazing, but when it come to phones android is where its at its original. Lawsuits are because apple is scared and wants to slow android down before they pass them in sales, apple has one phone its okay but android tears them apart but t mobile needs to seriously step up and kick the updates out the doors stop lying to your customers pick a date and stick with it… make us happy so we continue to be your costumers.
