EVO vs. EVO: Newer models have new displays

So I made this video in a hurry after rushing to my local Best Buy to pick up the Evo’s they just got in stock. I was buying it for a friend who I was adding to my Family Plan and after setting it all up and grabbing a quick bite to eat, I set the phone next to my current Evo (purely by accident).

Glancing over at the two Evo’s side by side I made a startling discovery. The colors between the two Evo’s LCD screens were MUCH different. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t noticed this sooner! If you weren’t holding them right next to each other you might not even notice the differences but after playing around with the brightness levels the differences were apparent.

The newer Evo we had just purchased had a more “washed” out look to it while the older Evo had richer colors and better contrast. We couldn’t believe our eyes. Upon closer inspection we also found a row of dead pixels we initally assumed to be a hair on the screen.

Samsung was manufacturing the AMOLED displays for the Incredible, but struggled to keep up with demand. We don’t know if it’s related, but it looks like HTC might have gone shopping for new displays elsewhere. It seems whoever else is making these new LCD’s is using sub par materials and the quality of the phone is suffering.

I don’t know if this is a temporary fix or an isolated case but it has definitely tarnished my view of HTC and their ability to put out fine quality handsets. Keep in mind, this is just another in a slew of reports about many issues Android blogs have been finding with the Evo. Up until now, I figured they were unsubstantiated. Now I’m starting to question the preorder I made with Best Buy for the new white Evo dropping this July. Especially with the thought of them coming equipped with lesser grade hardware.

If you happen to have two EVOs on hand, check them out and let us know if you can tell the difference.

Update: As pointed out on xda-developers, there are two versions of the EVO (002 and 003). It appears the 002 models have a Novatel LCD while most of the newer ones feature an Epson LCD, although I’ve seen reports of these being mixed. To check your model just navigate to Settings > About phone > Hardware Information > Hardware version.

That’s exactly why I don’t think this will be a big deal. Most people won’t even know there is a difference unless they are holding it up next to a first gen Evo. What I’m wondering is if the touch sensor is the same. If that changed, then that could be a problem if it isn’t as good as the original.

  • http://Website Tre (ts0cha0tik)

From the camera… The new evo look alot better and more crisp than the older one…
as the older still reveals some pixels from the camera plus i notice a darker contrast to it as the new one looks like it has brighter natural colors and fixes the pixel issue…

It also seems much faster for some reason from just you swiping the screen

You have seen it up front so I say go with what looks the best TO YOU

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Yeah, still undecided on which one actually looks BETTER… Its hard to say.

Can’t tell but I think the new one’s aren’t as BRIGHT, that’s what really got me.
Hard to say if its just the tint messing with my head though… =/

So you say… yet in your “article”, you say “I don’t know if this is a temporary fix or an isolated case but it has definitely tarnished my view of HTC and their ability to put out fine quality handsets.”

What are you talking about? Its long been known that HTC handsets are crap. They have terrible build quality. One handset may be great but for every great one that rolls of the assy line there’s 2 that are going to break or fall apart.

    • http://Website ChefDan

I had to replace the 002 since I cracked the screen on it and they sent me the 003. Sure the white on the new one has a pinkish hue but camera pictures/video seem better with less pixelation (even though that might not have been updated) and the screen definitely is faster and feels more responsive.

You will not notice the differences unless you have them side by side. I didn’t until I read this damn article and got pissed for a minute until I tested it out. I do like how vibrant the white is on the 002, but it is hardly anything to get upset about since EPSON is a solid company and whatever mod’s they did do to the newer versions are cool with me.

It is still a killer phone and android 2.2 is simply crazy awesome! The white may have a slight pinkish hue, but that’s about all the difference I can tell side-by-side. Everything else is sharp, clear, and smooth functioning on the new model so don’t worry about what screen you have and enjoy a great phone.

  • http://twitter.com/TMCraver TMCraver

Wow you can tell the difference as soon as you turned on the screen of the new evo. I think you should do another with the same wall papers though..

I was the first one out the door at my store the day it launched (got in line at 5:30am).

I just checked my hardware version and it says 003. So if you are saying the “newer” phones have the problem I am unsure if that can be true as my phone had to have been in the first wave.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

First wave would mean that your phone is the “older” version.
Apparently some new ones coming out still have the “good” screens, its just a mixed bag. You never know which one you’re gonna get. I’m guessing your’s is the pinker looking one?

      • http://Website Dough Boy

Not really sure how to tell (don’t have one for comparisons). All I know is I have 003 and got it on day one (the 4th). I expected to see I had 002 since it has now been 20 days.

But if 003 = 2nd Gen then just by checking the hardware version will not tell you what screen you have.

        • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Yeah, I don’t think hardware version has ANYTHING to do with it cuz mine is the 3rd day Evo (older one) and its hardware version 003.

          The plot thickens….

          • http://Website way2success

So yours is 003, What’s the hardware version of your friend’s EVO? How do we know which hardware is better or is it their new assembly line or something else ?

    • http://Website Sin City

I was the first at my store, and mines is 002 with Novatel. I’m not going to bitch about it, because the guys over at XDA-Developers never fail me yet, but I’m debating if I should just return it before the 4th. Worse case scenario is I get a 003 with Nova, and I’ll have to Full Root and Mod all over again.

I can’t believe but the rumosr was the LCD screens was falling out of the Evo. That’s what I hear but not sure cuz I don’t have one and plus I am with T-Mobile service. But from what I seen on the vidoe the old one look better in my opinion. You should stay with the first one you bought and if you are still thinking of getting the white model check and make is up to your standards. It depends on the person to know but good look on the news bro.

  • http://Website Lisandro

They are indeed different. Yesterday I went to Best buy to exchange my Evo, build 002, because of the screen and light linkage. When she gave me the new Evo build 003 I inspected it to make sure it was ok then put it next to the 002 Evo and the new 003 Evo hand more of a rubberize back cover the materials are definitely different

  • http://twitter.com/TMCraver TMCraver

Also i though you were going to get the white Evo? i wonder if they have the older screen or not.. also i wonder if rooting could be a factor? Also are you going to take it back and exchange it? maybe this was just one bad egg..

    • http://twitter.com/TMCraver TMCraver

sorry about the “also”s i added questions as i was watching the video lol

  • http://www.healthytiger.com Healthy

now don’t go all crazy about part variation. LEDs always have variation and honestly if you hold two of any screen next to each other they are probably slightly different tint from one another. (in normal LED terms you can get “Binned” LEDs which means they were hand separated into similar groups. (i spent years as a quality engineer at an electronics company)

not a problem unless you plan on building a 20 EVO tiled display. if reality you use one TV at a time, one laptop at a time, and one cellphone at a time. if they wanted to match displays to one another that would cost $ for no good reason.

as for differences in hardware revisions, thats how it works, but for the most part people won’t notice what has actually changed. i don’t remember how many different circuit boards the original xbox had over its life, but you only really cared if you were doing a mod to it.

anyway. dead pixels always suck, so return it, things like that are down to chance and always will be. as for the tint variations, it’s 6 of one and half a dozen of another.

i’m sure their quality requirements haven’t changed, even if they have gone from one supplier to another. i’ve been happy with HTC (though G1s and a nexus in my family plan) and i’ll continue to hold them above other manufacturers in terms of quality until they REALLY show otherwise.

Sometimes if you ask nicely they will let you power it up. If not, just walk outside, power it up, then take it back if there’s anything “wrong” with it. =)

There’s a long thread (or 20 on XDA developers about this regarding the Nova (0002) and the Epson/Nova (0003) screens. Also this comes into play since the hack that fixes the 30fps issue is limited to the Epson displays so far:

  • DistortedLoop

Well, I’ve only had my EVO for 8 days, so it’s definitely the “first batch”. It says hardware version 3 in the settings, and I don’t have another EVO to compare it to, but I can tell you that it’s definitely NOT got a pink tint to the whites, and it’s definitely VERY bright when set to max.

I think there’s just a little over the top drama on this one. ;-)

Of more concern to me right now is the iPhone 4 that’s sitting at home waiting to be opened for testing/reviewing and the early reports of jaundice the “amazing” retina screens seem to be suffering for some owners. Actually, it’s probably the same thing as going on here…some screens have issues and others don’t, it’s just par for the course with mass market products like this to have some samples of any manufacturing lot be bad and make it past quality checks at the plant.

    • DistortedLoop

Typo in the original post – meant to say my phone is NOT first batch.

Also, after comparing my EVO screen to my new iPhone 4 screen, I’d have to say that there is a slight pinkish tinge to the EVO after all, Web pages viewed side by side on both phones, the white background on the EVO is a bit pinkish, the iPhone 4 is “purer” white.

  • Uncemister

Sounds like a simple quantity over quality case. Lets just hope the “throttle” doesn’t get stuck open on these ;)

Ive had a similar problem with my second nexus one, not with the screen but with the vibration motor. It did not work anywhere near as well as my first N1. the phone itself seemed to make a ‘popping” sound whenever it started to vibrate. This wasn’t a deal-breaker for me though and I just learned to get used to it.

Honestly if there is a row of dead pixels I would try to exchange or get your money back.

  • http://Website Gator352

Dude, first off, they are not samsung displays (novatel, epson). Second, I can’t tell you how many times you said you can’t really notice a difference. Then, if it’s not that noticable as opposed to glaringly blatant, what’s the problem?

    You failed.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I SAAAAAID… Its hard to notice a difference through the HD cam I was recording with. But its pretty noticeable in real life. I showed 7 different people and they all noticed right off the bat.

Why did you not do a control test.
    A. Unplug the left EVO with swimming SPERM from the charger
    B. Set the Rainbow LIVE wall paper on both EVO’s
    C. Set the screen time out for 5min
    D. Set both phones down on a black background
    E. Turn the lights off so no glare is on the glass (do you have a screen protector on one?)
    F. Take a TEST photo from the samples on the EVO and side by side them.
    G. make sure your Screen back light is set to FULL override and not Auto detect.
    H. use a digital camera to capture the changes and not a video camera that is in low light.

Each Evo in the video has a different HTC sense homescreen bar at the bottom of the screen as far as their shape goes. If you pause the video at 1:57 you should be able to tell the difference.

  • http://Website Stanly

Can I ask 1. Why does the phone on the left have little sperms swimming around for a back ground? And 2. Why would you want a sprint phone when assumedly you are in your home and you get one or two bars? Just curious.

I tried sprint for about a month and it was the rare day when I would get 4 or more bars of service!

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I do get 2 less bars with Sprint than I did with T-Mobile, BUT I have constant 3G coverage as opposed to Edge. I use data more than I talk. But that’s just me.

And this wasn’t at my house. It was my friend’s house. When I had T-Mobile I would get a nice little “x” sign next to my reception in his house. Sprint rocks. =)

      • http://codethief.eu codethief

Yes, you DO need to use the same wallpapers for comparison because the colors next to to the whites have an influence on the way you perceive them (the whites). Never heard of optical illusions? ;)

  • Mark

Chris, I noticed you had the Expresso theme on your EVO. Are you running a non stock ROM? Could it be the culprit for some of these differences? I’d think at least the fading between brightnesses could possibly be related to that.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Yup. I have a custom ROM and I thought it might have been the culprit until I compared to another stock phone. Nope. There are screen differences. No way to tell which one you have unless you are aware of the problem. =/

That sounds like a defective one. If the bottom corner is rising then I would definitely return it PRONTO

  • http://hitechcoffee.blogspot.com/ Adrian Petrescu

The problem is simple the first wave of the phone have amoled from samsung, also the phone is manufacture date is 4-6 mounts old, so the production will go to cost optimization stage and will evaluate the parts needed for the phone, the work force and the production line.
Until the year 2004-2005 the first market was the american continent , all the products with A quality were shipped to this market. The rest was directed to the Europe and Asia (B). After the 2005 the UE country and the ex-soviet country are rising the appetite for the goods and also the rising the market. So any company that have a good marketing team see that opportunity (also see the crisis from US).
Dont be surprise for the thing that are coming :D this is only the at the beginning. Using a different display can be done for the different reasons like: price, quality, cost for work, availability. Soon will see the different product with same display. :)

At this point I’m probably beating a dead horse here but I’m just curious as to how you guys feel about paying a so-called “premium” fee every month for features that include a washed-out screen made from sub-standard parts? You would think for all the extra money Sprint is making off of this phone they’d be a little demanding of HTC to give them a quality product.

I don’t know why they don’t put it in the setting to let you change the color and contrast and such. That would fix everything. With TV’s and monitors you can go into setting and change contrast (not just brightness and do color adjustment. There is just a batch out there that hasn’t been calibrated?

I never heard of Novatel and I didn’t even know Epson made screens.

Before you start bashing HTC, you should get your facts straight. I have an EVO and I have not had a single issue with it. It is my 5th HTC phone and in my opinion, HTC makes the finest phones in the world right now and has been for the past 2 years.

The second batch of HTC EVOs have the lesser screen specs. The type of screen is not listed on the box that the phone comes in and not on Sprint and HTC websties. HTC knew they weren’t going to get enough of the first screen made by a different vendor then the current vendor that is making the new EVO screen. That’s why there is no information on the specs of the screen. The EVO is false advertisement when the new batch do live up to what the resolution promised originally.

Think for a second, why is it that the HTC Droid Incredible is taking such a long time to be back on the self. It has to do with the screen because Verizon do put up the specs on the touch-screen of “3.7″ 480×800 WVGA AMOLED Touch screen” whereas for the HTC EVO there is not about the specs.

As a customer who bought the phone base on the advertisement that phone have a high resolution,

As a customer who bought the phone base on the advertisement that phone have a high resolution, this is a big disappointment on the part of HTC and Sprint. Both HTC and Sprint credibility and integrity are at stake when they are not addressing the issue. Both companies are hoping the consumers won’t noticed the difference and leave it at that.

Again, as a customer who will be stuck with a company for two years should have the option whether to buy or not buy the phone due to the specs of the phone.

…Kind of funny how people insist on finding all kinds of imperfections on a communication device that is not meant to be a video centric electronic device such as a tv or a real webcam or a real camera, etc. Mr. Chavez report and comparizons methods are amateurish at best and only add to the info vomit and confusion that is taking place all around the web about these phones-especially about the HTC EVO.
Come on-it is only a communication device that should not be expected to be specialized in all its functions, but voice communication only.

You have a valid point. You are also missing the main point that HTC and Sprint marketed the phone with the features and not just as a phone only. That’s the difference. The EVO is a smartphone not a basic cellphone that make calls only.

  • http://Website kevin W.

In your EVO 4G youtube review of the two lcd models, you had a Wallpaper of Ryu vs. Wolverine (Marvel Vs Capcom). WHERE CAN I FIND THAT WALLPAPER??!?!?!?!!!!

can someone email me with that?

Thats weird because I just picked up a brand new Black EVO 2 days ago at Best Buy and I mine has the original display that fades the brightness levels.

  • http://Website Stewart

Both mine and my wifes Evo’s are HW id 002. I have not noticed any pinkish hues on either phone when placed side by side, and being a designer I am pretty sensitive small variances like that. I turned my phone on connected to ddms and noticed these two lines in the bootup process. Not sure if they mean anything or not.

    07-08 12:54:18.451: INFO/EventHub(103): New device: path=/dev/input/event4 name=atmel-touchscreen id=0×10004 (of 0×5) index=5 fd=80 classes=0×14
    07-08 12:54:18.451: INFO/KeyInputQueue(103): Device added: id=0×10004, name=atmel-touchscreen, classes=14

As I research it more, it looks like this is actually the multi-touch processor and not the actual lcd screen. Which would explain why its showing as an input device instead of a display device.

Only other things I have gathered is it is a qsd8k device using the msmfb display driver, but i’m sure thats referring to the qualcomm ardeno gpu. So the kernel does not seem to be reporting any screen specific information.

This is one of the most unprofessional and downright stupid reviews I have ever watched. No fact based professional knowledge of screens what so ever. “Will this stop you from getting an evo?” Seriously….Are you joking?? This is insulting to someone with even marginal intelligence. Thanks for showing the phones with two different backgrounds while doing a color comparison!! I’m not sure ill even want the white one??? Please. You already have two…..??? A pinkish hue. OH MY GOD. Its people like you that make working in the industry a real challenge. Now every self titled expert with their evo is going to start complaining about their screens, bringing them back to the store, babbling about an issue that barely exists. Its still one of the best screens ever seen on a phone in history. STOP THE MADNESS. Enjoy your superphone and stop the madness. OH AND DONT CALL HTC AND SAY “WE WONT STAND FOR THIS.” Oh my god what a waste of time. ” I wont have this pinkish hue that I can only see part of the time on one of my three phones. Heres an idea stop buying up all the evos so the rest of the world can get one. Oh god I have to go. I am now dumber for having listened to this.

Are YOU kidding? I am also in the industry. My 002 phone went dead, and I had to get a replacement. I ended up with a 003 with the new screen. Even if I didn’t already know about the difference in screens, I would have noticed the issue. It’s VERY washed out, and the colors simply look different (mostly it looks like the reds aren’t as red). Color quality is very important, especially in a device that boasts 720p video with a kickstand for movies/shows/whatever.

I’m disappointed in Sprint and HTC.

Say Chris, good job at noticing the differences, now let me tell you of another difference. I got mine on day 1, in fact 3rd one out the door, i even defected from Verizon to get one. I had to take it back soon therefter for another one (which is a hardware version 0003 but looks plenty bright), it seems there were some EVO’s with low radio sensitivity problems. I would have it within 10 feet of my DSL router and only get a poor level reading on the EVO, and i couldn’t get over 3 feet from it or lose the bluetooth earpiece. There is a technical service bulletin out on this problem that some units have low radio sensitivity so they exchanged it. you might want to compare your 2 units to see how the radios compare and make a video on that so other people can see if they have a defective unit and not realize it.

Im wondering if the pinkish tint is due to the ZAGG shield on my phone, I Notice it ONLY when I look at my phone from an angle…… when I look at it straight on its WHITE!!! ALSO, I’ve seen some comments about lines in the phone/dead pixels….. For me I noticed these things when I had my ZAGG shield covered EVO next to my bros UN-ZAGGED EVO. (after replacing the ZAGG, the lines or dead pixels vanished) Although I’ll NEVER take off my Zagg… am I the only one who thinks this way, or am I just crazy?!?

Well guys I read this article and read most of the comments about 002 vs 003. Now everything that you guys are saying about the 003 is wrong but I did notice a difference right of of the box. The 003 looks way better to me. ALL Colors for me are chrisp and correct so no complaints….I dont see the problems that you guys list here…maybe I have I new version with the fixes of the 003? Who knows…I just know the problems you guys complain about are not in my phone…

HELP! just got my EVO 12/24 and noticed there are two pixels, one is red in upper right hand corner and the other is white in the middle. I a within the 30days, and really like the phone. I ordered this through Radioshak on line, when I called about the pixels they advised they will send a new phone but also explained that their supplier is a company called Simplexity (nothing simple about this beat phone). Should I just return it directly and forget replacement and go directly through sprint.

Is this pixel issue going to become bigger if I were to keep the phone.

Wow….i waited so long to treat myself to this phone and it saddens me that this happened!

    HELP pretty please ;o)

Hi i just read your post my Evo just turned purple and teal colors on the display screen. Instead of the green color it is now teal and when I use the internet its purple. And I checked my model and it is 004.
