Samsung Galaxy S launches across Europe, landing soon in U.S.

Last week’s news was all about the launch of the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint and I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that Apple has announced the new iPhone 4.  But since we are an Android dedicated site, I thought it would be good to focus on the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S.

Most of us have been completely oblivious to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S.  We reported last week that Samsung was going to roll the handset out to over 100 countries this month, but we didn’t have any indication of which countries were on the list and when the phone would actually show up.  Well, apparently we have already missed the first few launches of the Galaxy S.

The Samsung Galaxy S went on sale in the UK last week and Samsung held a huge launch party for the handset in Zurich, Switzerland over the weekend.  We’ve been able to find a YouTube clip which gives a pretty brief overview of the entire event.  For those looking to get a little more information on the Galaxy S, Samsung has officially launched the handset’s site.  They have a pretty comprehensive overview of the handsets features, pictures, and quite an impressive interactive user guide.

As always, prices for unlocked GSM phone varies quite a bit.  A quick Google search shows that the price range Samsung Galaxy S goes from $499 for the 8GB model all the way up to $979 for the 16GB model.  When the handset finally does hit carriers across the UK and the rest of Europe, subsidized pricing for the Galaxy S could drop to almost nothing with a new two year contract with data plan.

Just to give you a taste of some of the impressive features the Samsung Galaxy S is packing, check out the list below:

  • DLNA client and server support
  • 4 inch Super AMOLED capacitive display (480×800 pixels)
  • 5.0 Megapixel camera with autofocus (supports 720p video recording)
  • Front facing VGA camera for video calling
  • DivX and XviD codec support including AVI and MKC file types
  • 8 or 16GB of onboard storage in addition to MicroSD card slot
  • Android 2.1
  • Swype, Aldiko, and ThinkFree (mobile office software) pre-installed

A United States launch could be right around the corner. Several members of the press have already received teaser packages which claim the phone is “landing soon”. We reported the Galaxy S could appear on all four major carriers with the most likely being AT&T and T-Mobile.

Ok, I think we can see that Samsung is actually putting some muscle behind the Galaxy S. That launch party in the video looked like is cost a few million dollars to put on. They wouldn’t do that if they were not makign the hnadset a priority. Everyone in the U.S. has the EVO to drool over, but here in euarope, the Galaxy S is where all the excitement is right now!

If this comes to T-Mobile, it may make me think twice about dropping them for the Evo 4G.

    • http://Website Wayne

On second thought, nah I’m definitely getting the Evo 4G. I trust HTC and I have a feeling they will support that phone for quite some time.

      • Prince77

Wayne, I already did it. I had that POS Behold 2. I am not going to spend anymore money on a Samsung phone. It’s messed up that the Evo is on Sprint. If it was on T-Mobile it was good as bought. But they decided to have the HD2 on T-Mo, which is crazy because everyone would be getting an Evo. They are both the same phone just one runs Windows and the other Android.

    • http://Website Drew

Boy oh boy! I can’t wait for Scamsung to trick me into buying yet ANOTHER phone of theirs only to drop support in five months.. love Behold2 owner

  • http://Website ari-free

Yes, this may not be their first Android phone but it is their first ‘Droid.’ Until now, Verizon was the only big player pushing Android and since it is US only, the rest of the world was unaware of its marketing campaign.

    • Prince77

Ari, what are you talking about? The Behold 2 was an Android. It was just garbage. I believe they just put that phone together quick to test out the Touch Wiz and then modified and perfected it for the Galaxy S. That to me was some BS to have a POS like that, you see they aren’t giving it nothing more than Android 1.6 because they are pushing everything into the Galaxy S.

Behold wasn’t a flagship phone. It was like the G1. A first gen experiment.

I def would like this phone if it didn’t have touch-wiz…bummer! Same reason i wont go for an EVO, i enjoy my updates far too much lol!

    June 19th???

I do not see T Mobile USA getting this device. T Mobile seems to be moving backwards instead of forward. T mobile will not get it due to the specs are to high, they seem to go for kiddie devices or low end models, Besides the N1 and HD2, those are looking like the only 2 high end phones they will be getting for a while

  • http://Website Anthony

These phones sure look tempting galaxy, evo etc makes me wanna dump my N1 LOL just kidding. Same processor and few bells and whistles and no froyo means bust

    • http://Website doctagadget

It doesn’t have the same processor. It has the hummingbird processor which is faster than the snapdragon, and it has a dedicated GPU which the n1 doesn’t have. it should be better. and with the iphone 4 having that crazy high resolution, the super-amoled is the only thing that can compete against it.

    great phone, great specs
but i’m still waiting for a high end superphone with stock android (vanilla) with a physical keyboard

@bubbles….T-Mobile will be getting this phone. It has already had it’s Bluetooth SIG approved. Here is the link to prove it. Also, there was a video review of the Phone done about a month ago and all of T-Mobiles exclusive apps were seen in the launcher. Here is the link for the Bluetooth SIG. (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_t959_is_the_tmobile_usa_version_of_the_galaxy_s-news-1660.php)

@Simon…There is a option in the menu to turn off TouchWiz even thought it has been getting great reviews so you may end up liking it. GSM arena stated that once you use the TouchWiz UI, you will never want to use anything else. There are also rumors of a (Pro version) which comes with a full slide out keyboard. You can check out some of it’s features here (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9000_galaxy_s-review-478.php)

@Anthony…The processor in this phone had a Hummingbird chip-set which makes it the fastest mobile processor available right now. GSM Arena stated that the Nexus One and HTC Desire do not live up to the Galaxy S standard.

turn off touch wiz and you do not get updates unless they changed this from the behold2 yes I had openhome running on my behold 2 and guess what it wont get updates with alternative home apps running.

Tmobile will definitely get it…. Tmobile UK

Tmobile USA already has a “high end” android device. The MyTouch Slide!! HAHAHA Tmobile is doomed, as soon as Sprint gets the Evo back in stock i’m switching!!

    • HipHopIsLyfe37

The Galaxy S Pro was just leaked today. You can see it on AndroidCentral, Engadget, AndroidandMe, and probably some other sites. It looks pretty sweet, especially with Sprint 4G

  • http://Website Harp

It’s available for preorder in the UK but there’s still no clear date as to when it will be available.

  • http://Website Andy

Just spoke to the T-Mobile (UK) upgrade team (after threatening to cancel) and the guy said the Galaxy S is showing as available from 11th June, however the date is not set in stone..

  • http://Website ObsceneJesster

@Garet…..If that is the case then all you have to do is turn TouchWiz back on when you know there is a update waiting. I think it’s pretty safe to say that if you frequent these blogs, you will know when your phone is getting updated. Your post is almost irrelevant..
