Android 2.2 pushed to Droid next week, some as early as tonight

Not  to be outdone by Sprint, Verizon will also roll out Android 2.2 to the Motorola Droid starting next week. The push will start for most users the week of August 2nd, but a Motorola forums manager reports that a small set of users might receive the update tonight as part of a pre-launch test.

We thought that Verizon might update all their high-end Droids at the same time, but we recently heard that Motorola was still working out the bugs for their Motoblur version of Android 2.2 for the Droid X and Droid 2.

The original Droid has a stock version of Android, so it has been in testing for a much longer period of time and this early release looks like a direct response to Sprint (and their claim of being first with Android 2.2).

Verizon is also testing Android 2.2 for the HTC Droid Incredible and we expect it will be released any day. At this point, it looks like Droid X owners will have to wait several more weeks (possibly till the Droid 2 hits stores).

From the Motorola owners forum.

For more information on the Android 2.2 update for the Droid, see the official Verizon support page.

Okay guys, stoopid ( :) ) question. What should I do with my rooted oc’d froyo build? Would this be a whole lot more stable?

Time to install Jrummy’s Lithium Mod. That’s built from the source release. :)

Good to see carriers finally stepping it up. Though I’ve been enjoying froyo for quite some time on my Nexus, a couple of months for other phones is quite reasonable IMO.

I hope it’s the actual 2.2 and not a watered down version like 2.1 was. I need more home screens and a better app launcher like the nexus one or I’m not unrooting!

    • http://Website Steve

According to the Verizon release I’ve seen on other sites, Froyo for the Droid will have 5 homescreens and the new Froyo launcher (with the phone/internet shortcuts). It’s about damn time, I was so pissed when the last upgrade cut the extra home screens out.

Just get the LauncherPro app n00b. 7 screens here without rooting.

Ever heard of Cyanogen?.. doubt that they will upgrade it to 2.1. anyway stop crying and go with the rooting…

Damn. So many haters out there.

You know, some people like to follow the rules. There’s nothing wrong with that, so people should stop calling other people n00bs or whiners. Some of us want OFFICIAL FroYo. What’s wrong with wanting it that way?

Yea we could root and void our warranty, or install 3rd party apps to replace our home screen, which may or may not bog down our system, but either way require more space/installs, but why should we do those things when waiting for the official thing is what we prefer?

I think you people who deride others that enjoy official updates need to stop reading these threads, if you simply want to criticize the people doing things the way they were intended. I don’t mock you for voiding your warranty–don’t mock me for not voiding mine.

P.S.- It’s all about the open source love. Choices are key, so let others make their own choices without calling them n00bs for it.

I’m happy for the Droid owners and all, but never buy a phone with Motoblur. I’ve had the Cliq since November, and we’re still stuck with 1.5, and no word about an update. Seems like Motorola has no interest in any customers who don’t use Verizon, or they would give us more information. I would stick with them if I believed I was getting an update before h*** freezes over.

I just talked to a verizon tech support rep for droid and was told that the update is going to be rolled out to “select markets” as of this morning. The update process will continue until August 15th.

What happen to my touch 3g no love damn

  • http://Website JM

Well, here we are! August 8th, end of the week and still no 2.2 on my original Droid. Going to stop holding my breath now… I’m starting to turn blue!! Fingers crossed it comes soon!

I’m still waiting for this update. These long waiting periods are not fun – I’m excited for gingerbread making manufacture UI’s worthless.
