Dell Streak pre-sale opportunity coming later this month

Is it a phone? Is it a tablet? Call it what you want, but the Dell Streak is finally going on sale later this month. If you have been waiting to pick up this 5 inch monster, head over to Dell.com and sign up for an exclusive 24 hour pre-sale opportunity.

We were excited about this device when we first learned of it last October, but the Streak has now been passed over by faster phones from Motorola and Samsung. Considering it will ship with the outdated Android 1.6, we now have a hard time suggesting this device to anyone right now.

No carriers have been officially announced, but we hear the Streak will be available in several flavors including AT&T, T-Mobile, and WiFi only. The price point is also a mystery, but I would expect it to debut around $500.

I thought devices like the HTC EVO and Motorola Droid X were pushing the limits of a smartphone display at 4.3 inches, but I’m sure someone out there will want to lug this 5 inch beast around.

If you really want an Android tablet, I suggest waiting till later this year when Google finally starts certifying the devices. Dell is rumored to be working on 7 and 10 inch models, so you might as well sit tight and see what happens.

As an old woman with old eyes and a purse, I am excited about this device. I only talk about 200 minutes a month but I use my smartphone for many other forms of communication.

Bottom line for me is that I am not going to carry two devices; so if I can’t get calls and texts on it, I am not going to carry it.

And for the record, Dell says it will get an OTA upgrade to Froyo in a few months.

I’m very interested in it. I have a “dumbphone” right now but I want a small internet device like this one.
