After the massive Dell roadmap leak in April which introduced us to the Thunder, Smoke, Flash and the Looking Glass tablet; there has been little news to speak of regarding any of those devices.
Fortunately that changed this morning as Engadget received a brief video and some photos showing off a Dell Thunder prototype which the proud owner claims is still on target for a Q4 release.
Currently the prototype is running vanilla Android 2.1, but it will likely be on 2.2 with Dell’s “Stage UI” by launch (3.0 probably isn’t in the cards for launch due to the timeframe and the presence of the Dell skin).
Other reported specs include a 4.1″ OLED screen, 8 MP camera, 720p video capture, and a 1,400 mAh battery. As with most of the leaked roadmap this device is rumored to be for AT&T. The screen resolution is a mystery at the moment as while previous reports had it pegged at 800 x 480 the video and photos tell a different story. Check it out and see whether you think Dell is upping the ante on the resolution here.
As Engadget points out this of course gives us hope that the rest of the roadmap was real including the Tegra 2 based Looking Glass tablet which was also due to be out in Q4. If you’ll recall that device was slated to have a WVGA screen so here’s hoping that Dell has seen the error of their ways and bumped the resolution on that one as well.
Despite Dell’s horrendous handling of the Streak launch and their inability to get it beyond Android 1.6 for launch the reviews of the hardware itself have been pretty solid and the Thunder at least has a solid and sleek look to it. Assuming they manage to get this phone out in a timely fashion and with a current OS are you ready to trust Dell for your next Android device?
