T-Mobile G2 on pre-order tomorrow, in stores Oct. 6th

Last night T-Mobile sent out the official press release for the G2, but they failed to mention the price or release date. Thanks to a pre-order offer from Best Buy, it looks like the G2 will retail for $199.99 with 2-year contract ($499 full price) and launch October 6th.

Starting tomorrow Friday, September 10, anyone can walk into their local Best Buy or Best Buy Mobile and pre-order the T-Mobile G2. There is no word on exactly how the pre-order will work, so your best bet is to visit or call the store in your area (I suggest making the visit to pick up one of the awesome buyer’s guide).

It is possible T-Mobile might price the G2 higher than $199 and offer a rebate for the difference, so hit up Best Buy if you despise mail-in-rebate forms like I do. However, T-Mobile did say they were doing their own limited preorder and existing customers would get early access to the devices. Maybe T-Mobile will enlighten us tomorrow so we can decide if it’s a better deal to grab the phone from them or Best Buy.

Anyone else eager to get this phone? I’m ready to pay full price at T-Mobile if they ship it out a couple days early.

I hope HTC have enough of these to go around unlike the EVO and Incredible.

i cant wait till i can get rid of my cliq. ive only had it for a year, so would it cost the full 500 to upgrade? or could i pay the difference?

    • http://Website B

I think you might get a partial discount, which isn’t a whole lot

      • HardNoks

i called to check but couldnt get a straight answer from anyone. this looks to be well worth the $500 though. ill jus have to save up longer

    • http://Website martin

i really bet this is basically going to be a nexus one with a keyboard (performance wise). if you upgrade and you are still under contract i’d bet you get like half of the contract discount but only have to serve an additional half of the contract.

    • http://Website SI

If you have a base voice rate plan of $89.99 or higher than you get an EARLY full upgrade with T-mobile through any retail store every 12 MONTHS versus every 22. It’s not something well known or well advertised, probably because people could switch to a plan that’s $89.99, get the upgrade, then switch back to their old plan.

any news on the phones thickness? wondering how much more thick it is than my nexus one.. i want the keyboard, but i hate the pants phone bulge

Go to tmo’s web page…they show the specs ther :)

    • http://Website martin

the nexus one is 11.6 and the g1 is like 16mm, so thinner than a G1, but not as thin as a N1

i thought it was going to be at least 16mm, i did all this research looking at other htc phones and thought it was going to follow the trend of being at least 16mm thick. glad i was wrong…..

    • http://Website .isreal

so if you held one its just about the same thickness of a mytouch 3g

I’ve pretty much decided this is going to be my next phone, though I’m going to wait until it’s cheaper on Amazon or elsewhere. If you wait a month or so after it’s released there are usually sales, just like the Vibrant had. I don’t think it’s going to be that difficult to obtain once it’s released, so I see little reason to pre-order.

  • http://Website Adam

I WANT this to be my next phone. I’m done with my myTouch. However, it only being a year old and thus, only a year into my contract, my life is in peril (i.e. my wife will kill me) if i pay full for it.

  • http://Website DaveC

I’m something like 95% sure I’m going to pick up this phone at full price (partially funded by selling my Nexus One). The slight hesitation comes from fear that some amazing dual-core phone with a 5-row keyboard will be announced shortly after the purchase. But I’ve been screaming for a decent keyboard for a long time, and I suspect this maybe as good as it gets for awhile.

17.5 Hours Standby? That’s literally the worst ever.

    • http://Website DaveC

@Gary. Go look at that same sheet on T-Mobile’s site. It says 17 DAYS not 17 hours.

I only want a phone that has :

    - Android
    - QWERTY keyboard
    - min 5 megapixel phone
    - FM radio
Do you believe that G2 has no FM radio ? I only want 4 things and only the Sony Ericson Xperia X10 Pro has all 4. But the screen is just too small.

Why is it that with over 200 mobile phone models on the market only 1 phone has all 4 things ?

Thanks HTC. That’s one phone I won’t be buying even though I would have loved to.

    • Azeem

The lack of an FM radio really doesn’t bother me at all since this phone has access to Pandora,, etc. More of the music I want with fewer ads? That seems like an acceptable compromise for a radio. :-)

      • http://Website Gary

Too bad about the battery. I like listening to Pandora for more than 3 hours a day.

    • http://Website mikeybot

Honestly asking, why is an FM radio important. There’s apps for all of that.

    • http://Website Josh

The Droid 2 has all of those also.

  • http://Website waffle

ummm I don’t see the pre sale on their website??????? Is this just an in store thing?

  • http://Website Greg

I’ve been on the fence with this phone for about a month now. I currently have a Nexus One and, while I’m basically obsessed with the thing, I really want a hardware keyboard. I’ve been using Swype and I’ve convinced myself it’s just as good. It’s not.

Simply put, nothing compares to a hardware keyboard (in my opinion). And since I wash my hands all the time, I find that my fingers often have too much resistance against the phone. I’m the opposite of the greasy-fingered people who complain about smudges. And maybe I’m just plain bad at using it, but the amount of wrong words it produces (especially if I’m cracked up on coffee or something) gets annoying after a while.

Not only that, I love playing old NES and SNES games on my phone. I can get by with some games, but others are not worth the trouble with the on-screen buttons.

But then I see that this phone has a smaller capacity battery. I was already irked about the clock speed, but I know that number is a lot more arbitrary than it seems (is it 2003??). That won’t prevent my friends from thinking it’s underpowered, though…

Ugh. Life is so difficult :)

@Gary. You sir are a complete idiot. If you had the common sense to do your research you would know that the cpu in the G2 is built for low power consumption and will rival the Galaxy S in processing power. The clock speed has little to do with how this phone will perform, and once rooted and flashed with Cyanogenmod (which is nearly certain to happen) the G2 will be device for others to envy.

    • boss5

      Darn right!

  • http://Website Hkirtz

So I was wondering if it was just me who sees the G2 as a waste of time. It is a phone running a stock android experience, this means that in theory updates would come to this phone ASAP. But with the new standard Google is putting out the processor alone stops this phone almost dead in its tracks. I want to personally have the newest android and when i found out about the requirements i made sure to pick a phone accordingly. I know that you can hack and everything, but i want the upgrade as a viable option. Also note that the Nexus One is able to be upgraded, and has been proven to work a lot better with the updates of Android. So what do you think is this a problem or is it just me?

    • HardNoks

      Its just you :D

Btw the G2 will out perform the N1. It will have basically the same or better performance, but with less battery consumption

    • http://Website legendary1022

The requirements for gingerbread was debunked a long time ago by Google.

  • http://Website sansenoy

only a 1300 mAh battery?????? I don’t care how much more efficient the cpu is, this is a joke.

Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental and all. Nevertheless just imagine if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and videos, this website could undeniably be one of the very best in its niche. Very good blog!
