Last month in Europe, HTC unveiled their next generation of Android smartphones which included the Desire Z and the Desire HD. We already knew the Desire Z was coming to the Verizon as the Merge, but new information is suggesting the Desire HD will also come stateside as the Incredible HD. Will Verizon finally get their own EVO-ish device? Read on after the jump for the full rumor, the original source, and one insider’s take on it.
Verizon Wireless will launch the Incredible HD on November 23rd, which is their CDMA version of the HTC Desire HD.
Boy Genius Report: First to leak pictures of device and claim it was headed to Verizon; DroidForums: Forums administrator Miami1683 claims the device will launch November 23rd. He is the same source that correctly predicted the original Incredible launch.
One Android Insider’s take on the rumor
There are so many leaked Verizon roadmaps that it is difficult to keep up with all the new launches, but the latest lineup included four Android phones for the holiday season including the HTC Merge, Droid 2 Global, Droid Pro, and LG enV Pro. As you can see, there is no sequel to the Incredible on any list we have, but that doesn’t rule out a possible launch.
We haven’t heard any new reports that the Desire HD was headed to Verizon since the original post by BGR, which dates back to August. That story proved the phone was at least in testing since we had some clear pictures of it, but Verizon is known to test lots of phones that never see the light of day.
Now the new source, Mr. Miami1683, is claiming he recently held the phone and promised to release new pictures next week. I personally don’t know this guy, but it sounds like he is a Verizon insider or is very good friends with one. He correctly predicted the release of the first Droid Incredible earlier this year, so we have to give him some credit until he is proven wrong.
The rumored specs of the Incredible HD include a 4.3 inch display, 1 GHz Snapdragon (2nd-gen), 768 MB RAM, 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, front-facing camera, and our personal favorite – the kickstand. The phone is said to be running Android 2.2 and it would be the first in the U.S. to ship with the new HTC Sense UI that we have seen before.
Verizon already has a pretty crowded holiday lineup, but the HTC Desire HD is one of the most craved phones for the U.S. market. We have yet to see the carrier launch any Android phones with front-facing cameras so that’s a defining feature that will set this phone above the rest.
Overall I think leaked shots of the Incredible HD look gorgeous and we have no reason not to believe the sources that claim the phone is shipping this year. I’m sure it will do quite well on Verizon as a flagship 3G phone, but I think it might be a tough sell to the hardcore crowd that already knows faster phones with dual-core processors and 4G LTE support are coming early next year.
