Motorola Daytona to launch as Droid X2, feature dual-core Tegra processor?

Motorola recently adopted NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor for their high-end phones (Atrix 4G and Bionic), so it makes sense that the two companies might be collaborating on even more devices. This past week, rumors began to pop up that NVIDIA would power the successor to the Droid X, codenamed Daytona. First we had the often-reliable Kellen of Droid Life weigh in and now Ray Willington of HotHardware says one of his trusted sources has told him the same thing.

The Motorola Daytona, or Droid X2, is said to feature a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 4.3 inch display with qHD resolution (540 x 960), and all the other bells and whistles found in the original Droid X like 8 MP camera, HDMI out, and HD video capture. HotHardware claims the operating system is currently set at Android 2.2, but surely Motorola will update that by the rumored launch date of May.

Kellen thinks the Droid X2 will not be a 4G LTE device, but Ray says there is no way to know at this point. Since the Droid brand has traditionally focused on the high-end market I tend to believe that Verizon would make this a 4G handset.

At this point everything is just hearsay, but I believe there is some truth behind both of these reports. May is not too far away, so maybe Verizon will reveal some more details on this device at CTIA in March. If you want to help us do some digging, be on the lookout for anything labeled Daytona.

So if this comes out with 4G, what’s separating it from the Bionic? Only the lack of a front-facing camera?

That is a good question. They must have something else up their sleeves. Maybe this will have that 1.2 GHz Tegra and feature a 3D display. Who knows at this point.

Hoping it will actually have 1 gig of RAM instead of 512 like the Bionic. -.-

If this comes out in may though it’ll probably be too late for me. My contract with AT&T will be up in April.

Hey bro just keep the phone you have and wait til May. Just a month without a contract won’t hurt.

    • http://Website Zer0-9

Maybe it’ll have a decent amount of RAM

Unlocked bootloader is another feature that could be different

I think it’s pretty clear that the summer of 2011 will bring us the same thing the summer of 2010 brought us the Droid X 2… As well as the htc evo 2 4g from sprint… These devices will be the best on the market in the summer of 2011…. Then it is only fair to throw in the Iphone 5 which will not be hspa on at&t or lte on Verizon but it will have something that android won’t have I’m sure… Bottom line both the Droid family on Verizon and the Evo 4g family on Sprint are about to grow and that will exist clearly for sometime to come… I welcome the Droid X 2 and the Evo 2 4g they will be the best

I don’t get it. The Bionic and this are basically the same and releasing the same time. I just hope the phone is slimmer and a much bigger battery.

I was considering jumping ship to Verizon for the Bionic, but that 512 MB RAM is not doing it for me. Maybe the Daytona will fix that. The 4G LTE doesn’t mean much to me as my market will not see 4G from Verizon until 2012.

So, this is what Google is giving it’s I/O attendees in May? Nice! I think last year was the EVO 4G.

    How does one get in?

Perhaps this will be the answer to the Atrix on AT&T? It doesn;t make sense for Motorola to not release a phone like that on all of the networks, especially if they are serious about making it a widespread and popular technology. The best part about the Atrix is the extremely large battery. I hope more manufacturers start using those kind of batteries…

Amen. When I see these powerhouse phones coming with 1350′s, it makes me cringe. I’m tired of having to plug in my phone every 6 hours.

Considering that Verizon will most likely charge a premium for LTE, I’m hoping that the Droid X2 would be the 3G counterpart to the Bionic. My finances are tight, so I probably can’t afford LTE.

I don’t expect Verizon to get iPhone 5 until 2012. I’m suspecting that AT&T still has first-run rights.

I really hope this new X2 phone will come with a front facing camera and keeps the FM radio. I would be getting this phone instead of the Droid Bionic since that is my other phone choice.

There were rumors a little while ago that this summer Verizon would release a Droid X2, Droid 3, and a Droid Incredible 2. Other than getting an LTE device with a keyboard, HTC and Moto both have LTE devices with 4.3 in screens and great specs. Since LTE will have a premium cost of some sort attached to it (like Sprint did), maybe these are going to have slightly better specs, but not be LTE phones, giving folks an option of top-of-the-line phones with or without LTE.

So, what is the difference in this and the bionic?

That looks like a Xenon flash, interesting. Potentially my new phone this, gonna see what 3D screen news we can expect first =)

I love my DX the only thing that makes my X the most desirable device still, I have gotten rid of moto blur. Motorola builds a solid fast device then in essence gives it the tech equivalent of downs syndrome.
Motorola, unlock the bootloaders, even with my DX I’m running Apex sometimes Rubix or liberty ROMs. Make this into a 3G developer phone and I will luv moto forever PROMISE! ffc would be nice too. But the x is awesome the X2 is going to blow your mind (no blur no blur no blur)

You’ll wickity wacked!! Blah Blah droids, how come no one is asking for the tablet/phone device. We all know the technology is there and ripe but we fools hang on to a device at a time. Wake up peopo, we are beging gouged. As anry as I am, whywould they make a droidx2 the same size as the bionic?? Why the delay between them??? If the powers are jerking us around now, what the hell are we going to do to get the”android tablet with phone” release date? I’m betting a mile of “stupidroids” sitting outside the Verizon or ATT store. Lord save us from ourselves.
