Sprint has something up their sleeves, another industry first coming Feb 7th

If you were a Sprint customer that was disappointed by the lack of product announcements at last week’s CES then take note. Sprint just started sending out invitations to members of the press for a special event on February 7th in New York where they will be showcasing “yet another industry first”.

So what could this industry first be? The invitations were sent out to several Android blogs, so it has to be something Google related. My guess is we will see a high-end phone to combat the AT&T Atrix 4G and the Verizon Bionic.

Sprint is sticking with WiMAX for the foreseeable future, so you can bet this new device will sport 4G connectivity. We know that Sprint has good relations with most of the big handset makers, so anything is possible.

LG and Motorola just announced their dual-core phones at CES, so those would be the most likely candidates for upcoming Sprint phones. It would not surprise me to see a Sprint version of the Motorola Atrix or LG Optimus 2X.

HTC and Samsung are also working on dual-core phones, but they are not expected to announce them until Mobile World Congress in Barcelnoa, which starts on February 14th. It is possible we could see a new HTC or Samsung phone, but I would say the chances are slim.

Other than launching a dual-core phone with 4G WiMAX support, I can’t think of any other upcoming tech that Sprint could tout as an industry first.

What do you think Sprint has up their sleeves?

Theyre going to come out with a 3g network competitor thats not wimax

CDMA Windows Phone, remember tht rumor saying microsoft is getting ready to launch with cdma? So yeah this is my best guess.

  • http://www.technogasms.com Sean Riley

Dual-core tablet with 4G support? Only reason I like this is it would make for a good visual with Blain prestidigitating a 7″ tablet out of his sleeve.

  • http://clarklab.net Clark Wimberly

At first I was going to say I didn’t care one bit but after I saw David Blane on the advertisement I’ve gotta say: I’m pumped! He is such a dynamic performer that I’m now more excited about the impending product announcement!

  • http://Website John Giotta

    What I want to here:
Android 2.3, free wifi hotspot service, 4G everywhere!

    • http://www.youtube.com/jcmjimmie Jimmiekain

This would be ideal… Or the LG Optimus 2X. w/ wimax. LOL

  • Dave K

If this is a dual-core WiMAX phone, that would definitely make me happy. Hopefully that’s what it is, and doesn’t have a keyboard. I’d be all over that.

    • http://www.twitter.com/jimmiekain Jimmiekain

Bring on the LG Optimus 2X w/ wimax or anything dual core with a gig of ram or better!

  • http://Website SphericalPuma

They’re going to do an industry first by being the first carrier to update their galaxy s to froyo….David Blane will make it magically appear

    • http://Website Russ

hahahahahahahahahahahaha! It really would take magic for that to happen

  • http://Website Nick

are you guys going to be there?

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

Most likely no. It is the week before MWC and I’m not a huge fan of NY so I doubt I will make the trip.

      • http://Website Joe

You run a major Android blog, with a lot of readers.

You need to go to this event because they’re going to announce the first 3D phone!!! (Read my other comment as to why I’m so certain they’re announcing the first 3D phone)

If you don’t go, you’ll be letting your loyal readers down.

Plus, phandroid.com, you competitor, has already said they’re going to this event.

        • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

Phandroid is not my competitor. Rob, Kevin, and Quentyn are all good friends of mine. I trust they will do an excellent job of covering this event!

          • http://Website Greg

Someone doesn’t know what “competitor” means.

          • http://Website Joe

Taylor, your website is starting to become a joke!!!

Androidandme.com doesn’t post articles about over half of the things your competitors talk about, and you always wait for your competitors to post an article about something before you do, so then you can copy them.

By you not going to this event, you’re disappointing your readers and you’re forcing them to use other Android blogs.

You need to get a lot more employees and to take your job seriously, or your readers will leave you for better android blogs.

I really hope they don’t waste our time with a 3D phone. The plain truth is that no one cares about 3D technology right now except the technology manufacturers. 3D has a long way to go (at least another 3-4 years) before it’s any good, whether it be on TVs or any other device. We absolutely do not need it on phones now.

          • http://Website Joe

The 3D technology has improved a lot over the last year. They now have glasses-free 3D devices and HTC has been working on creating 3D devices.

I hope they do announce a 3D phone, because then more manufacturers will start working on 3D phones, improving the quality of the 3D phones.

          • Dave K

Joe, 3D technology has improved to where it’s gone from worthless to just bad, and it’ll be a while until it gets to decent or good. Until there’s no longer any need for glasses (at all), until the brightness matches up to 2D, until the viewing angles are the same as 2D, the technology is pure garbage. It’ll take several more years to get to that point, and only after all that has been perfected on TVs should the technology be ported to phones. I don’t disagree that manufacturers playing around with it on phones now is a good idea so that the technology is pushed along and competition builds up around it, but that shouldn’t be the focus of any high-end phone for the next 3-4 years.

  • http://Website Roger

Finally!!! I was getting scared for a little bit there. Whoohooo!

  • http://Website Anthony

I basically want an HTC Phone with the power of the Atrix, Vanilla Android 2.3, 4G… will it happen? Probably not, but I can dream. D:

I’ve had AT&T for almost 2 years now so my contract is almost up. I’ve held off on buying the Droid X, Evo 4g, etc waiting for a sweet dual core on basically any carrier other than AT&T. As a cruel twist of fate AT&T has the (currently) most powerful Android phone announced for it with Verizon receiving a gimped version! I’m going crazy waiting for my dream phone. I so don’t want to extend my contract for the Atrix. >.<

    • http://Website Leoz

They are gonna “show you that the impossible is possible.” so your dream could very well be a reality.

    • http://Website The_Omega_Man

The Verizon Droid Bionic is not gimped! I’m told that the phone can only use 512 MB for Android apps and the other 512 is reserved for the webtop system.

  • http://Website Tom

Its extremely likely that they’re going to announce their version of the iPhone.

Since their flyer says it’s another first, I think its going to be the first iPhone that runs on 4G.

    • http://Website Mike

A couple of things why this is likely not the case.

1st. Why send the invite to a bunch of Android Journalist?
2nd. yes it would be first to have a 4g iPhone but it doesn’t come off as impossible. They already have those in the making that’s just a matter of time. so no the odds are not pointing towards an iPhone and I would be mad if it was cause it wouldn’t call for a huge announcement as they are letting on to be.

I have my ideas but I will just wait and see.

    • http://Website Gregory

That isn’t Apple’s game. They aren’t into giving consumers variety like that.

  • http://Website Honor Basquiat

What about the chance of it being the first 3D Android phone (no glasses) There was a rumor about one coming out next month… source: http://3dradar.techradar.com/3d-tech/htc-aiming-be-first-3d-android-phone-01-12-2010

What are your thoughts on a potential 3D Phone Taylor (or anyone else)? Gimmicky or game changer?

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

It is possible. Sharp already has glasses-free 3D phones and others have shown them off. I’m not sure if it is a gimmick or not, but the game companies are already working on 3D games for these new displays.

      • http://Website Honor Basquiat

Could a 3D Dual Core Android Phone on Sprint potentially change your mind about moving to AT&T for the Atrix? Why or why not?

        • http://Website Gregory

          Not at all.

3D would be a feature I’d show my friends, but not one i’d use. It kinda gives me a headache. Also, I don’t like to buy the first generation of hardware. I’d wait a few months for the next 3D phone IF I was into 3D.

          Just my 2 cents

  • http://Website nate

I hope it will be 2.2 froyo for samsung transform but probobly not

It very well might be a dual core tablet running android ics or ice cream sandwhich, which doesn’t suprise me because google is seriousley pumping out operating systems like no tommorow.

  • http://Website qriusme

I think it’s the LG dual core Android phone with 2.3.

If so, count me in for the upgrade.

I don’t think it can be an iPhone b/c it’s not an industry first CMDA iphone since Verizon picked it up. Steve jobs would not let a 4G iphone be announced by a carrier he would do it himself.

It can’t be a Windows phone, b/c it’s not an industry first. AT&T has a bunch of them.

    • mikedminor

      A WiMAX based i-product?….I don’t think so.

  • http://Website UniqueNate

Lol some of the guesses here are not common sense. Reason I say that is because it says a industries first and people are guessing what’s already out. So why another version of what’s out? I have no clue of what it may be. I still think it won’t be that big. Something beneficial to Sprint customers of course. We still have Feb 14 to look to and CTIA.

    • http://Website Richard

  • http://Website UniqueNate

Now that I thought of something, it could be a 4G Hpalm device.

  • http://Website snowbdr89

hhmm remember them rumors about some phone called the htc sabor?

  • http://Website Joe

It is the first 3D phone in the USA and its an Android device.

I think that because its something that’s the first, but there’s nothing that could be big enough to create a big hype about being the “first”.

-It’s not the Samsung Epic 4G update to 2.2, as that’s not big enough to brag about being the first.

-It’s not the first iPhone using a 4G network because Apple won’t upgrade the iPhone to the 5th gen until June.

-It’s not something related to Honeycomb nor the first dual-core tablet, because Motorola has already announce their dual-core Honeycomb tablet.

-It has to be an Android phone/tablet because there’s nothing “first” that they could announce about the iPhone that Apple would allow at this time, and WM7 doesn’t have enough users to justify this hype.

Last summer, Sprint was bragging about being the first to have a 4G phone, which was a very big thing. Since they used the word “first” for a big thing last year, I think they’re going to announce something that’s a big deal.

The only thing that I can think of that would be just as big of a deal as the first 4G phone is having the first 3D phone.

  • http://Website Big Mike

Wouldn’t it be great if it was a CDMA version of the IPhone . . . .

    That would be a dream!

    • mikedminor

      More like another nightmare!

  • mikedminor

It’s a 4G (WiMAX) Dual-Core Honeycomb based tablet with Voice Over IP! :p

  • http://Website Rob

Maybe they will announce the are FINALLY releasing Froyo (2.2) now that 2.4 is about to come out. So much for us buying their fancy Galaxy S phones only to not be upgraded and then they’ll try to sell us the next on – NOT.

  • http://Website Richard

A lot of people made a issues because to them nothing special was announced at ces…. sprint announced the htc evo shift 4g one day before ces and that was there announced product…. Anyone that is a true SPRINT CUSTOMER KNOWS SPRINT DOES NOT ANNOUNCE PRODUCTS AT CES…. Everyone now will see exactly how BUSY they have been. Deals are brokered in back rooms at events like ces with manufacturers and O.E.M’S as well as carriers. They are about to become very busy from this Feb 7th event to February 14th at mobile world congress… then march 2011 at CTIA….Expect Sprint to announce the first dualcore PHONE/TABLET MADE BY HTC THAT WILL BE 7INCHES AND 4G CAPABLE DUAL CAMERAS DOING 1080P AND VIDEO CHAT WITH GTALK THIS DEVICE WILL BE RUNING HONEYCOMB….. ALSO LOOK OUT FOR THE NEW HTC EVO 2 4G THAT WILL ALSO BE DUALCORE AND ANNOUNCED AT CTIA IN MARC… THIS WILL MAKE THOSE DEVICES ANNOUNCED AT CES LOOK LIKE TOYS…. HTC-SPRINT-GOOGLE-EVO 2. ROCKS

    • http://Website T72018

Thank you Richard for saying that!!! thats what ive been saying all along.Evo 2 and tablet by htc… i guess everyone didnt notice Htc didnt unveil their tablet at CES!!!! Sprint and Htc have something going on!!!!!

      <3 You rock!!

If it is the LG Optimus 2X, I may have to switch to Sprint.

    • http://Website joe

No need to switch. The LG Optimus 2x will probably be on all 4 major U.S. carriers.

  • http://Website Tom

Back from the dead an Android powered Skiff reader….that’s my two cents.

  • http://Website smartguy75

I think I cracked it. Look at the invitation carefully!

    1) The text “SEE WHAT SPRINT…” has a shadow effect to give a depth in the text.

    2) They used the word “Illusionist” with David Blaine. Why David Blaine? Hmm.. Why would he be a special guest to announce wimax tablet? Besides, Verizon already announced about Motorola Xoom would have LTE coming later. So, I doubt it is a wimax tablet news. Illusionist showing optical illusions!

    3) They used the words “impossible is possible”. What is impossible on a wireless device that would be possible now? Hmm..

    4) See Culinary, Creations and Cocktails. “Three” consecutive words starting with “C”.  C for cameras! Three cameras. Two in front and one in back. Or Two in back and one in front.

I think it is First 3D android phone!

With AT&T,Verizon going strong with high end android devices and iPhone, Sprint needs a device to continue the success of Evo and keep the customer base constant.

  • http://Website TareX

It’s the 3D Android from HTC…. HTC was already showing Glasses-free 3D prototype behind closed doors at MWC 2010.

I’m just so pissed it’s a Sprint phone (read: won’t work outside the US).. I hope it comes in GSM flavors, or just come to Canada.

  • jerkyjones

I’d be surprised if it was a device. The usual Sprint timing doesn’t line up. I don’t think it’d even be Android related. Something up their sleeve, huh? hmmm… Maybe something that only Sprint would be willing to do, something the other guys don’t want to touch. Nothing pricing related, they’re already beating nearly everyone on the unlimited plans. hmmm… i’m at a loss. I guess we’ll see.

  • http://Website Matthew

Could I buy a Sprint Android smartphone (non-contract) and use it for Virgen Mobile’s plan?. I know they are the same network but is there a way to switch the sim cards or something to make it work? That would be the way I go if possible. Virgen Mobile’s $25 a month unlimited internet plan is crazy cheap.

  • http://Website RMH

Humm… Let’s see, A Sprint first… I can think of one… UPDATE THE SAMSUNG EPIC… or DROP THE LINE if it’s not going to be supported… Samsung never updates their products after release… Learned my lesson this time… for me, Samsung is on my ‘X’ list…

Sprint has something up their sleeves, another industry first coming Feb 7th http://t.co/WCEStiy via @androidandme

  • http://flashfilmmaker.com Ibis

Hmmm somehow I doubt a “master illusionst” will “make me believe that the impossible is possible”… isnt he in the illusion trade? Maybe I’m over-analyzing but if you were to take that statement literal it communicates that they will reveal yet another “illusion” bwahahahaha

  • http://Website jimneezy

Maybe it’ll be the first time Sprint will let its customers use the cdma iPhone from Verizon on its network, think about it they literally waited for Verizons announcement to come through

  • http://Website Chris

Please, a 3D phone? How about getting Samsung Epic to at least run Froyo? How about a WiMax Atrix? Nexus S? 4g webOS device, dual core running gingerbread? Something with substance. Who really needs 3D on a phone? You seriously want to wear those goofy glasses for a 4 inch display? PLEASE tell me this is more than 3D, that would be a novelty and fit a niche market. Lets hope for more….

  • http://Website Paul Ponyboy Atriedes

I hope they will announce Gingerbread for the EVO aka the iphone killer, EVO 2 aka the new Iphone killer(Sprint won’t release one now since they’re running that EVO commercial still), and the HTC tablet.

  • http://Website Richard

Surprisingly enough it will be an HP tablet 9.7inches runing the NEW WEB OS operating system 2.5.1 it will have 1.3 megapixel camera in the front and 3.2 camera in the back and will BE WIMAX 4G… THE ANNOUNCEMENT WILL HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ANDROID ON FEB7… ANDROID ANNOUNCEMENTS WON’T HAPPEN TILL MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS AND CTIA…. BUT YES THE HTC EVO 2 4G IS COMING BY JUNE 2011

  • http://Website Paul Ponyboy Atreides

I can wait, I’m not losing any sleep as long as I have my EVO on hand. Hope they sprinkle some of that new sense in with Gingerbread for the time being.

  • http://www.brainhandles.com Greg Bulmash

    Two Words: Playstation Phone

Think “industry first”… tablets and dual core are already old. 3D is possible, but widespread, but a *true* gaming phone? Never been done and no other major console manufacturer has one.

Think it’s that or a Sammy slider running iOS.
