SONY Ericsson has a change of heart, will update the XPERIA X10 to Android 2.3

Owners of the SONY Ericsson XPERIA X10 were distraught, but certainly not surprised when SE announced that the X10 would live out its remaining days running on Android 2.1.  SONY Ericsson has struggled in rolling out Android updates from the very beginning, so most simply assumed that they would either need to hack the X10 or purchase a new device in order to gain access to the latest Android updates.

But it looks like there may actually be a glimmer of hope at the end of this dark tunnel.  A post of on the SONY Ericsson blog has just revealed that SE has had a change of heart and will be bringing Gingerbread (Android 2.3) to the XPERIA X10 after all.  The update will be available in late Q2 or early Q3 for most XPERIA X10 handsets which have no carrier branding or customizations.

Android 2.3.3 on the XPERIA X10 will feature a few generic Gingerbread features and some of the enhancements from SONNY Ericsson’s 2011 XPERIA handsets.  Since the update is still in development, not many details have been released.

While this is certainly some incredible news for XPERIA X10 owners, the comments on the SE Product Blog are mostly negative. As it turns out, owners of the X10 Mini/MiniPro and X8 are not happy to hear that their handsets will not be getting the same update to Gingerbread.  We certainly understand their frustration, but we’d like to point out that the X10 is a far superior product when compared to the other XPERIA handsets from 2010.

Good for all SE X10 owners! I have HTC Desire but still feel happy with all SE owners. X10 is still good phone in terms of specs and design is one of best that I think. With this move SE is polishing and for sure making its brand better in the hard android world competision.

Good call. Put simply, if a company abondons support for my android phone, I will never buy another one from them again.

Ummm….. I guess you’re not going to buy any more Android phones then. HTC abandoned the Hero, Samsung has abandoned a few, Motorola’s not rolling out update to a lot of their phones and LG’s first gen handsets have been left to die with Android 1.6.

Manufacturers will always have to abandon handsets. It’s simply not worth the time, effort, and investment to keep every single phone updated.

only abandoned phones are those with ARM11 compatible processors (mainly Qualcomm’s MSM7227)
honestly there’s no point bringing advanced features of the post Eclair versions to those devices, because all new features are intended for Cortex/Scorpion based processors!

Kudos to SE for listening customers and responding positively supporting device that was announced in late 2009!

Sony should fall back on stock android when they get tired of maintaining their customizations. It would be so much easier for them to stay up to date.

  • cobaltleo

Well i’m glad to hear it. i picked up the x10 for me and my wife for christmas over the samsung galaxy s (was hearing a lot of complaints about the gps radios) because if felt really solid and my past experience with sony phones. we later found out that at&t was blocking the 2.1 update so I rooted. and upgraded them to the 2.1 can’t wait to see if i can now watch flash natively on the phone. specially since we plan on keeping them till the contract is up.

The SE X10 was a joke on day one and 2.3 isn’t going to save it.

Some people simply like to bitch. People wanted to crucify SE when they announces that hte X10 wouldn’t be getting any more updates . Now that they change their mind and decide to roll out another update you guys complain that another update is a stupid idea.

Will you ever be satisfied or do you simply like to complain?
