Verizon to expand 4G LTE coverage to over 145 markets by year’s end

Today Verizon Wireless announced an additional 59 markets where it plans to roll out 4G LTE coverage by the end of the year. Their current 4G LTE network already covers most of the largest cities and reaches 110 million people, but the new medium-sized cities and smaller communities will help Verizon reach their goal of 100% 4G coverage in their current 3G footprint.

David Small, CTO for Verizon Wireless, said, “Aggressively expanding this powerful network beyond major metro areas reflects the reality that the 4G LTE ecosystem is growing quickly.”

Verizon just launched their first LTE handset, the HTC Thunderbolt, and several more are on the way including models from LG, Motorola, and Samsung. These handsets provide some of the fastest mobile broadband speeds and Verizon advertises they can deliver 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

Currently Verizon charges $29 per month for unlimited 4G LTE data, but company executives have hinted at tiered plans similar to AT&T in the future.

To see if Verizon 4G is coming to your city, check out their updated coverage map.

Wow, absolutely nothing in Montana or Wyoming. Guess we have no use for 4G whilst riding our horse drawn carriages to work.

    • Matt

I live on a 6,000 acre farm in the south western part of Montana, put in a phone line 3 years ago, 6 miles away! Cant wait to dump Wildblue, cant even stream video :(

I live 17 miles from the nearest town, and 50 min from the nearest fast food. I’ve never seen anyone riding in a carriage, and we don’t own a single horse or cow.
I drove over 6,000 miles/ year just going to school.
Needless to say, we are usually dead last to get any service (we don’t even get garbage pickup)

      • Max Erickson

We are either dead last for getting it or not get it at all. I live on 60 acres of land South of Billings and we have great 3G service but I doubt that we will ever get 4G.

I know, its kind of a big blank spot in the national coverage map.

  • http://Website Eugene

Iowa is screwed for 4g coverage they plan on adding it to davenport but no listing of adding it to the biggest city in the state even the states capitol but they gona add it to a town like davenport how messed up is that desires Iowa international airport has no 4g coverage but they give it to a smaller town and they say adding it to the biggest city’s and I feel that’s a lie but guess goes to show ya Verizon adds it where it wants and they have lost track of the little towns who helped get Verizon where they are today I live in newton Iowa 40 minutes from desires and have the HTC thunderbolt but by time we get coverage there will be a new style phone out chats hot and the thunderbolt will be like Verizon’s old bag phones if anyone remembers those sad day when Verizon forgets the little guys but now that they got big they don’t have to worry about the little man anymore. Maybe another provider will step up and show the company’s that the little guy isn’t forgotten who’s been a loyal customer for many many years since Verizon first started

Surprise! Verizon is turning on 4G LTE in Eugene, Or. Been playing for the last hour with it. Speed tests show up to 24000kbps download about as high as 17400kbps upload at one point.

Hope they leave it on, but for now, it’s fun to play with it.
