Gingerpalooza: HTC Droid Incredible and LG Optimus 2X getting Gingerbread this summer

It seems manufacturers are going into high-gear with the Gingerbread update. Following the endless stream of Gingerbread update news, HTC and LG have both gone ahead and confirmed the Gingerbread update for Verizon’s Droid Incredible and LG’s Optimus 2X. LG confirmed a date range through its Danish support site, saying that its device would be updated “in June-July 2011.” Meanwhile, HTC responded to a curious customer’s email with “I’m pleased to inform you that there is going to be an update this summer to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).” It’s nice to see manufacturers get things going with the Gingerbread update, but it’s very sad that it takes them half a year to roll out these updates. So there you have it folks, just a few more months — hang in there.

I wonder why it’s taking them a bit longer to update to gingerbread than it did to froyo.

I think what Google is doing is waiting to update the dual core phones to Gingerbread to get version 2.4 with dual core support on them. Makes no sense to update them to 2.3.3 and then have to send out another update with the dual core support which I imagine to be 2.4. I believe things are going to get a whole lot clearer after the IO conference. AndroidCentral is reporting that Google requested 5300 “somethings” from LG which I imagine will be the G2x which will probably become the first developer phone with a dual core processor. Only time will tell. In the mean time I still plan to buy the G2x but will probably still be using my Nexus One since I don’t really see myself going back to 2.2 at this point. Already sold my G2 to pay for the G2x off contract.

Thankfully, you don’t have to wait. If you have an HTC Incredible, it’s easy to root and install Cyanogen 7. I am happy to report that Gingerbread runs fast and flawlessly on the DInc.

When you say “Optimus 2X,” are you including the G2X as well?
