Motorola Droid X getting the Gingerbread treatment tonight

At last, you brave Droid X owners! That long-awaited day is finally here; you’re getting some Gingerbread tonight. Not feeling like being outdone by HTC, Motorola is rolling out the Gingerbread update to Droid X users as we speak. Members at the DroidXForums have confirmed that a “silent update” started rolling out a few minutes ago. The update process is pretty quick and painless, but those of you with modified software will have to restore to stock to get the update. Here are the many features Gingerbread will bring to your Droid X:

  • UI refinements for simplicity and speed
  • Faster, more intuitive text input
  • One-touch word selection and copy/paste
  • Improved power management
  • Control over applications. “Manage applications” shortcut in the Home menu
  • Native Internet calling support
  • Downloads app for downloads management
  • Many under the hood enhancements to speed and responsiveness

If you’re feeling a little adventurous today, you can manually update your Droid X by following the instructions here, but proceed at your own risk.

About time motorola and verizon are steping it up..good sign ..ha we beat you htc and sprint…I have a feeling evo people are going to find a way to make this negative…

Congratulations! You’re right though, the DX is still over-shadowed by the monster of 2010 the EVO! Hopefully this update brings a ffc and removes motoblur :-P. Honestly, I’m just busting your chops though, enjoy your update guys.

Thank you..I think we all know the Droid x is better than evo ..minus motoblur..

It’s a Gingerbread feature, but you’re right the Droid X doesn’t have an NFC chip. It’s fixed now.

Well there is no official press release from Motorola and so far this looks like it’s just going to a bunch of testers and some random people to see if there are any problems. I wouldn’t get my hopes up, yet. I’m gonna manually install it anyways :) ..

I just downloaded the update file in the article’s link; it took a while for my phone to boot up, but assuming you follow the instructions it’s a piece of cake. Gingerbread looks nice. ;)

Good for you guys and gals! I’m a little jealous, probably go the ultimate droid route tonight.

Try and be a little more patient. I’m sure when it comes, HTC will introduce some pretty cool things that other manufacturers aren’t with new Sense features. It will be worth the wait I think.

I may be wrong, but the first leak of GB for the DX didn’t have SIP support baked in. Has anybody confirmed this?

Are we gonna get any comfirmation…I doubt this is the real one, and does it make sense as to why I bought a Droid x a week ago and am at ver.2.3.320 what’s with that?

Man I have to say although I had to do a factory restore to get the bugs worked out. (I think mainly because of Launcher Pro) once it did and didn’t do a Google restore because it had launcher pro on the back up. I did the manually update and something i thought I would never say “the new motoblur is awesome” all the updates from the way you fix misspelled words, cut and paste, app drawer, social network widget, and the customizable dock, mostly everything is tons better and I would say better that most UI’s that are laid over Android. I like it better than Sense.

P.S. if you have the problem with not being able to add icons to home screens in the normal way it could be because of Launcher pro. Once I restored without letting Google restore from backup this problem fixed for me.
