Auto Trader hits UK Android devices with its brand new app

If you know a bit about cars, you’ve probably heard about Auto Trader. This nifty tool has probably helped many of you with your vehicle purchases/sells. In fact, Auto Trader claims 20% of all visits to their “autotrader.mobi” site are from Android devices. The high percentage of Android users led them to take things to the next level. Auto Trader has now released an official app for Android devices; it’s no longer necessary to access Auto Trader via your browser.

Sadly, it seems this app is only meant for UK devices according to the press release. I tried to get the app just in case, but none of my devices were compatible with it. It’s a sad day for American Android/Car enthusiasts!

According to the description, the app substantially eases the process of selling and purchasing cars. While there is a “quick search” option that lets you search through a variety of matching vehicles, things can get much more detailed. Advanced search allows you to go through a “wider range of search options, including keyword search, age, mileage, fuel, transmission and seller type to find your dream car.”

Once you find your vehicle of choice, simply call the seller directly from the app and get ready to enjoy your brand new car! Not bad. Hopefully America gets some Auto Trader action soon! It might just be me, so please let us know if you’re able to download this app. As for our UK readers, let us know how the new Auto Trader app works for you!

Auto Trader App now available for download on Android
App developed in response to rapidly growing user base

27 June, 2011: Today, Auto Trader, the UK’s most popular motoring website, announces the launch of its mobile app on the Android platform. The app enhances Auto Trader’s core digital features by optimising the search experience for Android users.

Auto Trader has gained considerable traction among the Android community, with the number of Auto Trader Android users rocketing by 97% in the last six months. In November 2010 Auto Trader’s mobile site (autotrader.mobi) received 187,000 visits from Android handsets, which grew to 370,000 in May 2011. Approximately 20% of all visits to autotrader.mobi now come from Android handsets.

With these high rates of usage among Android users, the platform forms an integral part of Auto Trader’s continued commitment to growth on mobile, which now attracts 1.2 million monthly unique users across iPhone app, Ovi app and autotrader.mobi. Auto Trader has a full mobile roadmap and will continue to support the Android platform, with new functionality and updates, to ensure its place as an essential tool in the car-buying process.

Commenting on the launch, Nick Gee, Director of Mobile at Auto Trader said. “As Android-enabled devices prove increasingly popular with Auto Trader users, we want to bring the best of Auto Trader to this growing audience. We aim to build apps for mobile platforms at the right time, based on audience size determined by the traffic to our mobile site, and how we can best enhance the users’ experience with an app. Android already drives a significant amount of traffic for us and we see its importance growing as the platform continues to be adopted by users.”

The Auto Trader app on Android was designed in partnership with Sponge Group and developed in-house by Auto Trader.

It’s about time this kind of app came out. But why only the UK? Why doesn’t this apply everywhere once it is done?

I know, it is really a bummer. I was hoping that I could try it out and see if there are any good cars available…

Great UI/UX, that’s a shame it’s limited access. We have been using a cross-mobile platform software (yes, native) that would allow the app to work anywhere on any hero device. Pretty low cost and pretty powerful SaaS approach. It’s called “Wave”. Simultaneously builds, launches and manages the app across Android, Apple, Windows, BBY, Java, Symbian…and soon one other. Same stuff CNN, the NBA, The Register, LTA and a bunch of other big hitters use for app presence.
    very best,
