Rumor: Samsung is working on a Galaxy S II “Plus” phone meant to compete with the iPhone 5

A Samsung Galaxy S II is cool, but you know what’s even cooler? A Samsung Galaxy S II “Plus”. According to a rumor that surfaced this morning, Samsung is working on slightly better version of the Galaxy S II, hence the “Plus” tag.

The device is said to launch between August and September of this year. Also known as right around the time the iPhone 5 is coming out. And this is no coincidence, it’s obvious that Samsung will release this phone mainly to compete with the iPhone 5.

Don’t get too excited though. There’s a reason why this phone will only be a “Plus” version of the Galaxy S II and not a whole new model altogether. So far, the phone is expected to only upgrade the Galaxy S II’s processor. Bringing it from a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU to a 1.4 GHz dual-core one. Also, it could launch with Android 2.3.4, so you won’t be missing out on that Google Talk with Video goodness. Unless you’re on T-Mobile, of course.

That’s pretty much it. Hopefully, the CPU is not the only thing that the “Plus” improves over the Galaxy S II. I wouldn’t get mad if this Galaxy S II 1.5 phone also had an NFC chip and one of those 720p screens. Now that’s what I call an update. What would you guys want Samsung to improve on the Galaxy S II? Let us know in the comments.

NFC is really the only addition I needed. A version that comes to Verizon would be good too

I agree, im getting the superior iPhone 5 any day. Bring it on, Apple.
      We are excited.

Did you just say “we” are excited about the iPhone 5 on an Android blog? Are you serious, or did you type the wrong URL into your address bar?

I dont care about NFC…but the addition of LTE would guarantee this to be my next phone.

  • Scotter

Regarding screen resolution improvements, yes, it is about time Samsung got with next gen resolution and started producing phones with 960×540 or even 1280×720 resolution. Apple has been running 960×540 for awhile now. Come on, Samsung!

    • http://Website Micah

No apple is stuck in the past as far as their aspect ratio goes. The screen is 960×640.

I Just want the normal galaxy s2 to come state side. Stop “breaking my balls” samsung!

I wouldn’t be mad at a true unibody design. Not a quasi unibody like the sensation.

  • http://Website Jorge

How about bringing back a feature that’s in the first version and is missing in the second one? TV out through the audio jack any one? Playing games and emulators on a tv is nice and showing pictures and videos is way better compared to people huddling.

      You haven’t heard about MHL?

I have now, if it makes it to the us which it should I’ll be sold

New galaxy s 2 comes with mhl technology :)

Heard something the other day about a Galaxy S3. This fall. Early this fall.

  • http://Website Fan

Good to hear, but I (personally) can’t get too excited over it since we don’t even have the “original” GSII stateside yet… Bring the GSII to VZW, make it LTE, and I’ll buy it on launch day! If the original is half as good as everyone say it is, I might be willing to pay full retail for the “plus”, a year down the road… My $.02…

I just want that Samsung doesn’t include the bland TouchWiz interface. I think they should go Vanilla on this one. It sounds good so far and since iOS 5 seems to be a complete bust, I think it’ll do well against the future iPhone.

  • http://Website Exynos

Nfc is a for sure. This is because it is already in the galaxy s 2. But what I would love to see Samsung do with this super hardware, is allow users to switch between there UI and stock. With out root. Stock 2.3.3 or stock 4 would run so amazingly on this

  • kwills88

I think Samsung/US carriers is just trying to purposely piss me off considering that q3 is about to start and the US release date for the normal SGSII hasn’t been announced yet.

  • http://Website mikeyDroid

    Just like you said;

Up the screen resolution + NFC and it’s all cherry, dude.

  • http://Website Jeff

The Galaxy S2 is already a better phone than the iPhone 5, because the A5 is only 900 MHz.

Plus, the latest iPhone 5 rumors say that it will still be only 3.5 inches and it will still not have LTE.

    • http://Website mimstyle

yes is better than the futur i4s or i5 you know

  • http://Website JayMonster

Well, it is a Samsung, so it will have TouchWiz, will be made of cheap feeling plastic, will have an AMOLED screen so color reproduction wil be lousy (bright, popping color yes, just not the correct colors) and will take forced to get updated..so what would I want changed? The manufacturer.

No LTE = Waste of money. Wouldn’t bother with an outdated 3g phone. Only thing new is the dual core. Who cares? LTE or just throw it away.

    • http://Website HappyFeet

Waste of money for some, but not for me. I stay in Hampton Roads, Virginia and I have no idea when we will see LTE in this area therefore I won’t be able to partake in the LTE fun anyway. :-(

The SGS2 already beats the iP5 because its not an iP5!

If thats all the SGS2 plus is im not bothered. I already run mine at 1.4GHz 24/7 with stock voltage. I dont care about NFC which just makes overspending even easier!

  • http://Website Alexander

I thought that the SGSII already had NFC support in it? Oh, it’s an option for carriers to select… Right. ‘options’ for carriers that don’t let them control the market more means they get cut…

  • WickedToby741

They should just launch the Plus version with CyanogenMod 7 installed from the factory. That would make it a true Plus version.

  • http://Website OMG4real

New rumors are surfing saying the new iphone might have an A6 processor if this is true the GSG2 may lose the fight.

  • http://Website tim Morrison

Increasing processing power won’t deter Apple customers.
Apple still has the most elegant OS in the industry. Simple …but brilliant nonetheless…
Until a manufacturer can top that…apple customers aren’t going anywhere.

    1. Premium build quality materials (but still thin and not too heavy)

    2. Higher Screen Resolution, this is essential for anyone doing lots of web browsing and e-book reading.

    3. NFC chip

If i had to choose one of these it would be Higher screen resolution, i would even give up amoled for higher screen res. ( its a must for readers)

I applaud Sammy whatever they decide to do. They are locked into a serious competitive fight with Apple. HTC and my EVO 3D BLOWS EM ALL OUT THE WATER

    • monlosez

Evo has nothing on SGSII other than 3D.

  • http://Website Rohan

    1. better lockscreen. Even the stock one is better than touch wiz lockscreen.
    2. better automatic brightness feature.
    3. dedicated camera button.
    4. dedicated search soft key.
    5. nfc

Points 1,2 can be pushed to SGS2 og as well..
Other than this, sgs2 is a great phone already. I don’t want higher res at the cost of performance for sure.

  • http://Website cb2000a

Just release the phone on carriers in the U.S. …please that’s all we ask.

  • http://Website Johnny

What are the official i5 specs anyway. It’s only gonna hurt apple to release a powerful smartphone on yesterday’s size screen.

  • http://Website Raghav

needs a camera like the mytouch 4g slide

  • http://Website sam

i wouldnt say the processor needs improving , its amazing already. the screen could be improved to a qhd maybe, or even a 720p on like the rumored nexus 4 phone ? the UI is great but htc rules in terms of UI i think, samsungs could be improved but im not sure how. LTE would be important, not so much in the uk, because 4g isnt meant to roll out until early 2012 anyway, but you gotta be prepared :) im getting the samsung galaxy s2 anyway, i dont think i could live for another month or two without it, especially with my super old nokia, it has snake though xD

  • monlosez

It already has best screen, processor, GPU and speed out of all android phones. 720p and LED notification would be nice addition. It does 1080p Adobe Flash videos and play pretty much any media file.

  • travis

ok here’s the big question that everybody wants to know but no one is asking. will the galaxy s 2 plus have QHD RESOLUTION?? 540X960?
