[RUMOR] T-Mobile G2x to receive Gingerbread update early next week? (UPDATE)

UPDATE: We’re now receiving word that it may be another 1-2 weeks before we see Gingerbread on the G2x. No word on whether this was a delay or whether our original rumor was incorrect.  We’ll keep you updated.

Great news for all of you (us) G2x owners out there! A few of our trusted tipsters have informed us that owners of the T-Mobile G2x may not have to wait much longer to get updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. We already knew straight from T-Mobile’s Twitter feed that the G2x Gingerbread update is due to come out before summer (read: sometime in June), but our ninjas are pointing us to a release as early as the first half of next week.

Once the Gingerbread update is released, G2x owners can expect various performance enhancements, as well as the overhauled Gingerbread UI. Hopefully LG is working hard to throw in bugfixes to the several ailments that have plagued T-Mobile’s beloved flagship, though whether those will be packaged as part of the Gingerbread update or as a separate OTA remains to be seen.

As a G2x owner, I’m stoked that the Gingerbread update is seemingly right around the corner, and I’m sure you guys are as well. As always, we’ll update you if we learn of any new information on the G2x update. Stay tuned, and let the excitement begin!

I just hope that it comes with an updated baseband and kernel. I’ve been having nothing but problems with this leak GB and find myself re-flashing every week or so. Thanks for the tip Anthony!

    • agentdiscount

Help me out here. Since I’ve only ever put Cyanogen on my G1 once, what will an updated baseband and kernel do for us?

Definitely looking forward to this GB and will update as soon as available.

      • http://Website Rome

Well the baseband would be nice because I get ZERO signal with this one most of the time. The kernel is built for Froyo, so it has issues for Gingerbread.

I have the g2x and when i powered it on today it is saying S/W upgrade please wait while upgrading it has been stuck like that for 20 min . I am just wondering what software is upgrading .I dont think gingerbread is released yet.

I rooted my g2x with superoneclick, then unrooted it. anyone know if I will still get the official ota?

    • http://Website Binary

Don’t worry. You will still get official updates.

C’mon, where’s the love for the G2? The G2 came out months before this one and yet we’re still anticipating an update.

    • http://Website jorenko

Agreed. One of the biggest reasons I got the G2 is because I thought the Google Experience would mean quicker updates!

    • http://Website Coolimanga

Why o Why Would They Put GB On an Old Ass Device Rather Than Put It On A Hi End Device..?? That Dont Make No Sense Bruh…

      • http://Website trey214

Where is the update for g2 and the mytouch 4g. I think dual core phones are great but I think android will die soon cause it just not one super phones it many of them. And it seem like one come out every month that top the phone you just brought. Wth

    • http://Website Frank

You can thank HTC for that one. Hopefully the G2 does receive GB in the summer..*crossing fingers*

    • http://pryvateid.tumblr.com Dave

Slow down… lol. It’s actually on the list to get the Gingerbread update soon as well. Not too many (if any at all) other devices have even got the Gingerbread update, so it’s not like you’re behind or something.

  • http://Website 2C

I really hope it’s Gingerbread version 2.3.4 because it sure would be nice to get some Google Talk video chat love.

    • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

I hope so too, but I fear it’ll be 2.3.3. Who knows.

    mytouch 4g slide :D

  • http://Website Cole

Can’t wait, but i heard there’s going to be 2 updates. One is a software fix for all the bad little bugs for it and then later the gingerbread update. Can’t wait! Let it be both in one! FTW

No GB release dates for the Vibrant!!

I hope it fixes the GPS at the least !

For real this time? They tweeted on April 24th that it was coming soon. Kinda reminds me of when they promised the G1 was gonna get upgraded to Eclair and then it never happened.

  • http://Website sasopu

Hey G2x users, anyone of you owned the Desire HD before the G2x? I just can’t decide weather to upgrade my dhd to g2x, or keep my dhd…
are there any speed improvements, comparing them? overall quality, stability etc., how do they compare?
It’s a really tough call for me, and i could use some help from people that used them both a lot.
    thanks in advance :)

Can somebody tell me why the PM is still in the notification bar? It was in the thisismynext review of the supposedly final build of Gingerbread for the G2x as well. I thought for stock handsets running Gingerbread that was outed.

    • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

I know the answer to this one… the culprit? Photoshop.

We have no clue whether it will be in the official GB release or not, but our image ninja pulled a generic gingerbread screen and slapped it in.

  • http://Website Paul

I hope this comes to the non US, optimus 2x & please add widescreen photo taking, please & also much quicker photo taking it takes over 2 seconds from when you press the button.

    • ayocuz

I dont like the shutter speed either. And all those sensation demos that shows the instantaneous picture taking got me thinking about selling my g2x.

    • http://Website Sapphire3g

If you own an Optimus 2X, you do not own a G2x. This update is for the T-Mobile USA G2x. To spell it out, you will not get this specific update.

      • http://www.MiiWiiChat.com Player911

This may be for the G2x, but the O2x is still very similar. They may not share the same baseband update or kernel update but it can be plucked apart and parts reused in the bettering of the O2x.

        The update will benefit both.

  • http://Website LBark

Please don’t kick me out of the “Cool Guys” club, but I got my G2x about a month ago and I’m hoping someone can refer me to a G2x 101 course.

I already know the basics, e.g. how to dial a number, how to press send, but I’m itching to get that sensation and hype feeling that every one is yelling about.

You can take screen shots by holding the home button then pressing the power button

  • http://none aztimid1

I’ll believe it when I see. T-mobile tech support can’t even acknowledge problems with the g2x let alone know anything about software update.

    • http://Website Craig

I just got out of training and i already know the ins and outs of all the known issues of the g2x, i baught it, i troubleshoot it every day…its apart of life, its technology guys, sometimes shit happens when you push too hard

how do i get the new update 2.3.3?…. i cant seem to find it

  • http://Website jblah

Does anyone know if the 2.3.3 upgrade will support video call with skype? I know there is qik but that only allows for phone to phone video calls if i’m not mistaken..and it does not integrate with skype. I would like to be able to video skype with someone on the PC. Any suggestions?

  • http://Website Anxious

Any news as to when g2x will be getting the Gingerbread update? Everyone’s predicted time has come and gone.

  • http://Website jblah

Its like predicting doomsday. They all get it wrong :). But in all honesty, this is only week 1 of the “week or two” extension. So perhaps by the end of next week? In either case I got frustrated enough to install cyanogenmod 7 nightly after rooting the phone. It has android 2.3.4. HOWEVER, video calling mobile to PC is not supported for neither skype nor gtalk for the g2x at the moment. I read somewhere that this is because of the tegra 2 dual core processor. So the whole reason I upgraded kinda defeated. the upgrade did however, fix a lot of issues such as the random restarts, and unresponsive touchscreen. (Since it is a “nightly” build it is still in the “experimental” stage so there are glitches in cyanogenmod..but you can still do what you need to do..call, web, text). I think once the stable cyanogenmod comes out I will just switch to that.

  • http://Website jblah

here are some helpful links for cyanogenmod

    root a phone

    unroot a phone

    installing cyanogenmod on g2x

http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/LG_G2x:_Recovery_and_CyanogenMod <– i used this for install..method #2. Just remember to get google apps and flash that along with your cyanogen mod flash. You will also need to remember to mount data and system from clockworkmod recovery. None of the documents mention that. I found that in a forum somewhere.

  • http://Website Regulus

Newsflash, I don’t have gingerbread on my g2x…lol. Any update??? CM7 isn’t bad, I loved it on my evo, and still love it on my nook but It just feels a tad wonky on the g2x yet. It’s a new device, it’ll take some time to catch everything up,.but if anyone can do it the cyanogenmod team can.

I have a unlocked g2x running on Simple Mobile. Will the fact that im on Simple Mobiles network give me any problems with receiving this OTA update?

  • http://Website jblah

apparently t-mobile is field testing with t-mobile reps for the g2x. but honestly now that i’m using CM7 why switch to 2.3.3? besides by the time they get around to releasing 2.3.3 we’ll already have 2.3.5!

Man this phone has so many bugs.

It freezes up all the time. I checked the running services GUI and there are numerous unnecessary processes running. It would be nice if they had an option to restrict from auto loading if not launched.

Also, it seems like this phone usually locks up when the Google Sync is in the process. That’s when the message” Activity Launcher not responding” pops up. Thankfully the force close works pretty well.

I’m also seeing these issues with the launch of the web browser.

The above issues somewhat makes this phone not dependable. I think if the Activity Launcher stalls too long the phone tends to shut down. This is greatly problematic because if the phone shuts down and you aren’t aware of it you will miss important calls and messages. I’m not sure if this is a common issue with Android phones across brand lines but I do know that I’ve experienced similar issues on the Motorola Cliq.
