Eric Schmidt: Our competitors are responding with lawsuits because they cannot compete with us

Speaking at Google’s Mobile Revolution conference in Tokyo, Japan, Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, talked about the growing number of patent lawsuits levied at Android. The ex-Google CEO had a lot to say about the way competitors have decided to go after Android using lawsuits and bogus patent infringement claims.

As we’ve seen lately, companies like Oracle, Microsoft and Apple are increasingly going after Android OEMs in hopes of getting a slice of the Android pie. As we all know, it’s a pretty big, popular and profitable pie. But there’s nothing to worry about, according to Schmidt, who shrugged the whole thing off as just “legal fun.” In other words, these lawsuits are just part of the game.

Schmidt also explained why competitors have recently decided to sue Android supporters, saying:

We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations. I'm not too worried about this.Eric SchmidtExecutive Chairman of Google

Ouch. Them’s fightin’ words, Mr. Schmidt. As you might know, this is exactly what we’ve been saying for months. But it’s always nice to hear it from a top executive at Google. Put simply, Android is winning and suing Android OEMs is the last option competitors have. Google and its frenetic release cycles have left other mobile platforms in the dust. Just ask Nokia, RIM and Microsoft, who have seen their market share disappear overnight and are now scrambling to survive.

Schmidt seems pretty confident Android will be able to come out of this fight alive. After all, it’s his job to reassure Open Handset Alliance partners that everything is going to be alright. However, we can’t help but wonder if the media (including us) has blown this whole lawsuit war out of proportion. Maybe the reason Google is not fighting back, as far as we know, is because they don’t feel that threatened by these lawsuits.

But it seems comforting words aren’t the only thing Google is offering its OEMs partners. When asked about whether Google would help HTC pay the bills on the lawsuit against Apple, Schmidt said, “We will make sure they don’t lose, then.” Apparently, Google is more involved in these lawsuits than we previously thought. And they seem to be helping their partners with more than just moral support.

I’m glad Google’s stepping in. I hate to see MS bully OEMs just because they can.

Just as I have been saying all over the blog world HTC has nothing to worry about that manufacturer is here to stay. People spend to much time HATING I guess they should HTC has bolstered windows mobile and has further planted android on the map forever. Google/HTC/Sprint will always be the way to go in my world. Apple WILL NEVER COMPETE WITH EITHER they spend to much time trying to bring other manufacturers down when they are only trying to innovate which at the end of the day helps us the consumer. If your walking around with any apple products you seriously need to look at your self and ask why… http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/07/18/why-apples-patent-victories-over-htc-arent-all-that-important-or-scary/

I used to ask the same thing about BMW owners. After driving one I found out the answer. A Hyundai is not a BMW and an HTC is not an Apple. I like Android/Google but telling Apple they’re the ones that need to start innovating is laughable.

Laughable to only you I suppose, Apple has had their time and honestly that TIME HAS PAST…It’s best that they go quietly and don’t create any more trouble in the industry. People see the drips and drabs that they recieve when Mr. Jobs feels it to be best then other people see exactly what HTC is working with honestly the difference is pretty striking. Apple may have created certain things that have made the industry as an whole much better they should recieve credit for those things but others have also taken the smartphone industry to another level as well and they too should recieve their just due…This world does not revolve around apple nor are their products the only products on the face of this earth…YES THE FACT REMAINS THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE A MIND OF THEIR OWN and are capable of realizing what exist in the smartphone space and rather your rolling with an HTC windows mobile device or and android HTC device you are rolling with a manufacturer that actually cares about how you need the device to be. ALL APPLE CARES MOST ABOUT IS THE MONEY THEY MAKE NOTHING MORE OR NOTHING LESS. Last year if I remember apple fans had the hardest time with the antenna issue on the iphone 4 and what was told to them from the fearless leader of the apple empire YOU ARE HOLDING YOUR PHONE WRONG. THIS IS A JOKE AT BEST and so is apple.

with RIM flopping i seriously think google should make a move to scoop RIM up.
i also dont see microsoft letting 2 ways of making money getting away from them…

Good to see that Google takes care of its partners :-)

  • http://Website Noah

Where is Google “taking care of their partners”? Blasting them doesn’t seem to be resolving the issues that HTC (and others) are facing. Ignoring the problem or mocking it doesn’t make it go away…

Don’t worry about the wolf(Microsoft) nawing on our arm…
Don’t worry about the greedy pig(Apple) walloing in your food..
The wolf and the pig don’t know any better
OMG! google is standing up for their OEMs

Maybe not the best analogy but you get the point.

So glad to see google getting into the fight finally. Apple’s lack of innovation is stifling the marketplace. Since they see that they are winning, they sue? What kind of b.s. is that! Can’t wait till jobs is dead and apple dies and withers like an apple fallen from the tree.

You mean apple is losing, not winning.

And Apple still sold 9 million iPads and 20 million iPhones this quarter.

Just think of what they could do if they actually competed!

    • http://Website Tom

And google gets 500,000 activations a day. That’s 3.5 million a week for it’s hardware manufactures to divvy up.

    • http://Website Trisjen1983

Android more android phones were activated daily and the numbers are changing as we speak!!! Can you imagine if Google was like apple and made their own hardware? Their would really be no hope for apple to compete.

Also we will see the numbers for Q3 & Q4 when apple releases it next minor revision of it’s iphone vs the Samsung Galaxy S2 hitting the states!! Now remember we have seen the stolen features of the same old polished iOS 5 nothing new, but Google still haven’t unveiled Icecream. Icecream is going to make iOS 5 look like a micro machine compared to Google’s Hot rod.

No one wants a iphone to look like a Android phone, I guess Jobs missed that memo!!!!

  • http://Website Trisjen1983

It’s to much money involved for Htc to lose on something as vague as these patents!! I expected Schmidt to say something like this and I expect Microsoft to help as well. Microsoft makes money off ANdroid phones, so this will be squashed. Also with Google releasing Icecream in the 4th Quarter will mean for another record sale profit for Htc, so I wouldn’t be worried either. Money talks and money will make them walk. That’s not including what we don’t know behind the scenes of what’s going on since apple is found guilty of those S3 patents. So either way Htc, google, and Android will continue to thrive. Bring on the Quad core tablets and Icecream Sandwich!!!!

As for apple I don’t know, stop making the iphone look boring and iOS ancient! P.S. Stop copying Android’s features even tho they are Open Source. No one wants a iphone to look like a Android phone. Scrap iOS 5 and make something magical again or did you use all the magic in 2007? Lol

Do you think this is about rivalries and battles? This is nothing more than business as usual for today’s tech firms. And it’s a win-win. Substitute invoice for lawsuit and you’ll get an idea of what’s going on. Companies use the technology they need to use to make their products work. If the product bombs, nobody cares about the patent issues. If the product is a success, the patent owners move to enforce their rights and collect their licensing fees. Since the product is successful, there is plenty of money to pay. Certainly this is the case with Google. It’s that simple. Everyone seems to know this except the tech media and bloggers.
