Google releases new version of Market app with new interface, books, movies

Google just took the wraps off a new version of the Market app, and all we can say is: “Wow.” This new version of the Market is, without question, one of Google’s most beautiful and easy to use Android applications. The Mountain View company has completely overhauled the way the Market works, looks and performs on Android.

Google explains how this new version of the Market will benefit both users and developers alike. With a completely new way for people to look and browse for apps, it’ll now be easier than ever for users to find high-quality apps and for developers to get paid. This is what Paul Montoy-Wilson, member the Android team, said about the new version of the Market:

You’ll be delighted to find we’ve overhauled Android Market to make it faster, easier and more fun to discover great apps, movies and books. We’ve created more space to feature some of the most interesting content of the week on the home page. We’ve added more top charts, with newer, more relevant items, and we’ve made it easy to swipe through these charts as you browse the store. We’ve also introduced new collections of great content, like staff picks and Editors’ Choice apps.Paul Montoy-WilsonGoogle

As you might notice immediately, this new version of the Market screams Honeycomb UI. We can’t get enough of it. You’ll also be able to switch between tabs by swiping left and right on the screen. I’ve been seeing this manner of tab-switching on many Google apps lately, and I won’t be surprised if it becomes one of the main UI elements on Ice Cream Sandwich.

The app details page also got a brand new interface. App screenshots are now featured at the top, followed by the description the reviews. I was never a big fan of the current app details page UI, but now I can’t wait to get rid of the it. Overall, the new version looks much cleaner and organized than the previous one.

But aesthetics changes are not the only thing new about the Market app. This update also lets you rent movies starting at $1.99 and buy books. We’ve been able to do this from the Market website for a while now, but now you’ll be able to do it from the Market app on your phone. The experience is pretty similar to buying an Android app. In other words, you’ll be able to rent and watch your favorite movies in about 5 seconds. You’ll also be able to “pin” those movies you wish to watch while offline. Just like you can do with songs when using the Music app.

In conclusion, I think I speak for most Android fans when I say, “Finally, Google. Finally”. We’ve been waiting for a good-looking, intuitive and full-featured version of the Market app forever. And at last, the company has delivered. The number of issues with the Android platform just shrank by one.

Hey, WP7 oh wait, Android? When did you adopt the Metro UI?

    • http://Website Noriega713

I dont care, I think it looks nice…

      • http://Website Noel

I agree, it does take form from WP7, but this IS an app, and not the full user interface. And as long as Android doesn’t go saying “we are a gift from God and we don’t copy anyone and we own everything” I’ll be just fine. Plus, I would take WP7 over iPhone anyday. This coming from a current Android user who used jailbroken iPhones from gen 1, until Black Friday 2009 when I made the switch.

@Perry hotter Android not having games, isn’t a real deal breaker. Who wants to go home after work, and play a game flom there phone? Just sounds corny, those people should just a ps3 or a xbox.

Froyo coming out for update in the next couple weeks

Any idea on when we will see this new market on our handset or tablets? I tired a force close and cleared data to see if it would come up but nothing.

  • http://varemenos.com/ Varemenos

Any info on how we will get this on our phones?

    • http://varemenos.com/ Varemenos

Here is what i found out about the “how do we get it, question”:

‘We’ve already begun a phased roll-out to phones running Android 2.2 or higher – the update should reach all users worldwide in the coming weeks. We encourage you to try the update as soon as you receive it. Meanwhile, check out the video below for an early look.’

  • http://Website Brian

Great! So how do we get it? I don’t see an update available for the market….

Looks nice, can’t wait to get it here!

  • http://Website ArizonaLoco

Hmmm. I bet root users will not be able to get this version of the Android Market.

    • http://Website Ruben

Why would you say that? Root users will prob have an apk to download by the end of the day. I guess you are right though. I prob won’t receive this update cause I prob won’t wait for it i’ll do it myself.
P.S. Gotta love all the comments talkin bout, how do I get this?, when the answer has already been posted in the very comments your asking your dumb question. I sometimes wish Android wasn’t so popular, and everybody that was an idiot would have an iPhone.

      • http://Website Mark

You FOOL, get off your high horse. If Android wasn’t popular, you wouldn’t be getting all the great apps and games that have been coming to it. This new market update would probably have never even be released because Google would have even began to drop support for it little by little. To put things short, the ecosystem would have died off…

    • http://Website Nick

Well it looks Like @Ruben was right…I’m rooted running a custom ROM and I have it up and running on my phone..and its SWEEEEET!

Installed the APK on my Milestone 2 and Galaxy Tab. Great app!

  • http://Website JamieB

apk file can be found on XDA (direct link: )

I installed it on the N1 with RootExplorer , it loaded but it had an “error retrieving information from server”.

I pulled the apk from the data/app folder and moved it to system/app, rebooted, it still said “error retrieving information from server” but when I click the search button and then click back, it works fine.

    So….WORKS ON N1!

    Looks great, too.

If you’re stuck on anything older than Android 2.2, then that’s your problem! You’re way overdue for an upgrade in hardware!

Notice it said Android 2.2 and up, so the VAST majority of phones will get this update. Hardly fragmentation.

looks alot like WP7 pivot and swipe control. WP7 still looks 100x times betta.

I know this is gonna be a dumb question, but is there a way that we could get this on a honeycomb device??

    This new marketplace looks terrible!

I don’t understand why so many of the other commenters appear to be happily swallowing Google’s PR.

The new app store is completely cluttered with way more dumb advertising and unnecessary graphics, and it’s actually more difficult to browse for apps I actually want.

The previous app store was clean, straightforward and easy to use.

For chrissakes, Google, I want an app market, not an entertainment magazine.

People should have the option to continue using the old app market… other commenters may think that’s lame, but hey, I’m just saying people should have the ability to choose.

    • ad hater

I agree 100% I was a little confused to open up my market to find it flooded with Ads (mostly ads for Google)

If you happen to find a cure for this “virus” please post it

  • jason

Hate news market! It’s too cluttered. Also af

  • jason

Also after you scroll down n open a app u go back n u have too do all that scrolling again. WTF:(
