T-Mobile myTouch 4G Gingerbread OTA update rolling out now

The Gingerbread update for the myTouch 4G is finally here!  T-Mobile announced this morning that the Android 2.3.3 update is being pushed out over the air to a limited pilot group.   We’re assuming T-Mobile is simply playing it safe to make sure the Gingerbread update doesn’t cause any unintended damage before they push it out to all myTouch 4G owners.   T-Mobile plans to broaden the rollout of the update within a few weeks.

In addition to the standard Gingerbread improvements (power management, download manager and SIP support), the update will also add Exchange 2010 support, the latest version of Swype and a handful of bug fixes and enhancements to improve Bluetooth, the display and the handset’s roaming capabilities.  If you happen to be one of the first to get the Gingerbread OTA update for the myTouch 4G, be sure to leave us a comment below and tell us what you like best about your newly updated phone.

I was just about to root! Can’t wait for the update.

    • http://Website Nithin Jino

Better to root. You can try out AOSP, MIUI, Sense 3.0.

Also these devs put out stable updates than these so called “Devs” from T-Mobile.

      • http://Website Wes

I actually tried to root but failed at getting S=OFF haha, so this timing is just convenient for me!

  • http://Website tony

    Its actually 2.3.4 :)

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

Can you confirm that? T-Mobile’s documentation says it’s 2.3.3 and all other Android updates for HTC phones have been 2.3.3. A good way to check would be to see if GTalk support video chat since that’s a feature only available in 2.3.4.

      • goldenboyrb

am I too late for this? it’s 2.3.4.

    • http://Website what up?

How do you know that it’s 2.3.4? Not being a smart-ass. Just curious.

      • http://Website tony

No I get you guys, I saw it on these forums.

        2.3.3 could be right.

        • http://Website Tony

Looks like the guy was misinformed. He states that Gtalk does not support vchat. I dont think anyone’s running 2.3.4 yet except for the Nexii phones.

          • http://Website uncemister

            Actually my droid 3 has 2.3.4 :)

          • Lanet

Just got update and you were right its 2.3.4

    • fatima

My Mytouch 4g is actually running android 2.3.4 i got the update about a week ago its pretty cool

      • Elliott

How do you install the 2.3 update the notification came into my notification bar that the download was in progress then it went away what do you do after that

      • ickyrocks

I don’t understand about Mytouch 4g getting update?! Someone help!! Whats the difference?

    • NintrndoPwr

Yeah, my wife got her update today and I was dissapointed that it didn’t have the TV shut off effect when you you power off the display :-\

  • http://plus.to/neidlinger @neidlinger.

i’ve actually had 2.3.4 on my phone for a while.

    it’s nice. it’s smooth. it’s good.

    • http://Website tony

I have the stock on my girls, im running the faux rom.

  • http://Website Deus Invictus

This is some $h#t the G2 was out first and it is “stock” where is Gingerbread for the G2

    • http://Website Marcofromda510

I think its a fair trade off, G2 gets the ablility to run netflix now and the MT4G can run on gingerbread. Either way both will have Netflix and Gingerbread, but as a MT4G owner, I felt sleighted about not getting Netflix. Im sure none of it is connected or the companies are, was just saying from a general stand point.

      • craig

the G2 is also getting ota upgrades to gingerbread, just fyi. I believe the schedule is the same.

  • http://www.ringcentral.com/voicemail/index.html voicemail number

I bet AT&T is waiting for the release of the Infuse before they’ll allow updates to gingerbread for the Inspire

  • http://Website Mark

WTF man? The G2 came out first AND it’s STOCK Android. Ugh. Never again will I use stock or skin to judge my purchases. And don’t say root. Not everyone is into rooting.

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

I’ve been pushing this point for over a year now. Buying a phone with stock Android does not guarantee a speedy update to the latest version. I own the G2 as well, but I’m guessing T-Mobile is pushing the update on the mytouch 4G sooner because it’s was their flagship Android phone for so long. I’d imagine the install base is much higher for the MT4G than for the G2.

  • http://Website Ralle

So did anyone get the upgrade yet? Is there a version already floating around online?

  • http://Website Josh

“Google Talk with video and voice chat will gradually roll out to Nexus S devices in the next few weeks as part of the Android 2.3.4 over-the-air update and will launch on other Android 2.3+ devices in the future.”

So even if we’re running 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, I think we’ll eventually get Google Talk video chat. We’ll just have to wait for it separately.

Is there any way to download gingerbread for mytouch 4g online since I am not currently in the U.S (wont be for another year) so therefore not connected to t mobiles network to download this update..

thanks in advance for the help

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

T-Mobile has not offered a manual update process for their Gingerbread release. You can probably head to xda-developers since they probably have figured out a way to install this update without root. That being said, I don’t think you need to be on T-Mobile’s network in order to actually get the download. Maybe someone else can shed some light on that.

      • http://Website Gingerbread without OTA

Thanks Nick for the reply, as far as I can see on xda’s site the gingerbread they have for the 4G is a pre-release version so its not the actual final version that t-mobile is rolling out. And as for OTA updated I am pretty sure you have to be connected to t-mobiles network. Wouldn’t make since that they push a FW through another providers network.. Why not just let us download the update instead of forcing a OTA..

That level of control freak is too much, basically the phone you paid for from t-mobile is NOT your phone its just being borrowed and if you want to update it you have to pay t-mobile for the right to download it and be directly connected to their network via their SIM.

I bought a Mytouch 4G and got it unlocked and shipped to me by a friend in the US. I am currently using it on a Arabian Operator here in the middle east and I just got an update notification on my phone.

I accepted and installed it as I had the unlock codes given to me when I purchased the phone in the event the phone locked itself after the update.

After the update the phone turned on and its working just fine. However no Video Chat option on Gtalk which I was expecting. Anyone know anything about that ?

  • http://Website Marshun jackson

I got the 2.3.4 update that tmobile sent me. What i like the best is the battery life and the 4g indicate instead of that. H. I also like the quick settings. I got this update yesterday around 10am. And im so happy with it. But for all u saying it 2.3.3 it not. I dont have friends on gtalk so if somebody want too add me too make sure the video chat work my gmail is [email protected]. Thanks

  • http://Website Sarb Z

Its so lazy and frustrating process. Why its taking so long. On LG phone its already been updated. Just go to website download it and update the phone thats it. Whats wrong with HTC MyTouch 4g.

    • http://Website HTC is T-Mobiles Bitch

The reason is HTC has bend-over and is doing whatever T-mobile tells them, your phone is NOT an HTC phone its a T-Mobile phone. You bought it from T-Mobile but you don’t really own it, its more of a permanent lease sure you can use it for as long as you want but if you want to update it then you must be on your owners leash. They want to control you so that you CANNOT get your phone updated if you have changed carriers (even thou you have already bought the phone and finished the contract etc…) in a nutshell..

  • bw511581

Still havent got an update…. I want it bad when will everyone have the update

  • UNHAPPYcustommer

I havent gotten the update i reset my phone so many times. nothing. mytouch 4g.

  • Update

Just talked to a T mobile rep. for those of us who are still waiting for this update there is light at the end of the tunnel. A very very long tunnel. It seems in the next two months possibly three T mobile stores will be able to update you in store to the all might gingerbread. only problem I see by hearing this is the fact that it sounds as though a OTA update for everyone is not going to happen. Just IMO. Guess we will see.

  • JPPizzle

Just got my myTouch 4g OTA update. IT IS 2.3.4!!! :) Still waiting to test GTalk to make sure video chat is included. Sure hope so.

  • joey

Ive been waiting for this update for along time, idk when its ganna come so im just going into the store cause i cant wait anymore

  • jeff

where’s my update anyone know when it will be rolled out to all customers

  • nick

I am currently out of the country and wont be back for maybe the next two years :) Anyway I could update to gingerbread online as I am obviously not on T-Mobile out here…

  • Damonnn

Ok so I have a mytouch 4g and its been acting a bit weird. It turns some apps into a blank screen. I was hoping maybe the update could fix it?? Which brings me to the next question, when will this update be available for everyone?? I need it now!!!!!!

  • Leela

2.3.4 out of the box. Very snappy, but cannot be rooted.

  • Davin

so guys, I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I got the 2.3.4 update. Its pretty sweet. I don’t really know where to look for the differences, if you do, let me know. The main differences are in the new swype which are nice, but I’ve found to be a bit frustrating at times. I have noticed that my phone used to get bugged down and slow down at times, but now it doesn’t. I’ve noticed a better battery life on my phone, but that’s about it. I’ve had the update for about a week now. I’m still running the HTC Sense 2.1 which I could care less for.

  • kelly

    just got it!
to be honest, i was a bit worried that it was something else… some virus or something because three of my friends also got the same phone on the same day at the same store as i did and they did not get the update. So being the paranoid skeptic that i am, i decided to research it. turns out its legit… and so i updated it.

It has only been 20 minutes or so… so i doubt i have seen all that this update provides, but off the bat i can say that i like the new texting format. Alternate words pop up at the bottom of the text-box instead of in the middle of the screen. you can keep texting and ignore it if you want. If you finish your message and notice, for instance, that the word ‘skin’ should have been ‘akin’ you dont have to erase it and retype. you can just click anywhere within the word and the box of alternates appears at the bottom of the screen.

I am one of the unfortunate few (many) who has had their inbox deleted… on three occasions. Supposedly this bug will fix that issue. We shall see.

There are also some minor differences with the look. the lock screen slide down bar has changed a bit… the text screen is slightly different. There is a microphone button for tap-to-talk on the default screen now… I think the tap-to-talk text option was an aftermarket thing in the old OS… but i never used it so im not sure.

There may be other stylistic changes but i use launcher pro so i cant really comment on the HTC sense changes.

all said, i think i like it. might just be the fact that it is a change. Kind of like rearranging furniture… you always think it looks better for the first week. I just hope the phone doesnt bog down anymore. I have been on the verge of throwing it out the window a few times. I dont know how many times i have complained about my phone not being a phone. we shall see.

    fingers crossed

Someone please help me. Lastnight I got an icon in my notifications bar it said tmobile firmware upgrade in progress. I was conected to wifi being I dont get cell reception at my house. The next day the icon was still there I left to get gas and as I was on my way home I looked at my phone and it was gone I didnt see anything to indicate that the upgrade was installed and when I check the android version on my phone it still says its running 2.2.1 does anyone know what happend? If the update failed how do I get it back?

    • Tom

Same issue! How do I get it back! Damn wifi I was using failed….

  • Gagan Kumar

“MMS” feature stopped working immediately after Upgrade.

I have spent hours with Tmobile tech support. They can’t seem to fix it.
As a last resort they are shipping me a replacement phone.

  • nintendopwr

My wife had 2.3.4 on her phone today after the update. I was disappointed that it didn’t have the TV shut off effect when you power off the display. Anyone else noticed that?

  • Tracy

I updated my Mytouch a few day ago and I have the 2.3.4 update. There are a few noticeable changes. My battery life is worse and it takes long to get it to a full charge. The swype keyboard is different and there is a new microphone button, which is bascially the only new feature I like. Messages seem to send faster too. My camera and camera apps don’t always work though. They have been freezing up and then not working at all. It says the camera hard drive is down and i need to restart. I restarted my camera and it seems to be fine and then it will freeze shortly after. It has never done this before so i am hoping it is just a bug with the new software? I don’t know but is this happening to anyone else?

  • Willy

For those who have received the OTA update, please post your location (e.g., city, state) so that the rest of us would be aware of its geographical disbursement. This afternoon, I went to a T-Mobile store in the shopping center at SW 72 ST & 157 AVE in Miami, FL and was told that they discontinued providing the in-store update and that I could get it via the Web. Well, I learned the hard way that was a lie.

Why hasn’t T-Mobile simply posted a schedule with estimates by region\city\state of when users should expect to receive the OTA update? They have people tying up their support lines and rushing to stores trying to find out how to get it. After waiting over eight months for this update to fix the ActiveSync issue on my myTouch 4G and now this marketing fiasco, I am really leaning towards ending my contract and going back to a pay-as-you-go phone.

  • Alex

I just got my update today at a tmobile store, i live in mill creek washington, about 30minutes from headquarters. every t mobile store in my area has them, and i mean every one, i updated at a mall kiosk today. Battery is pretty amazing, it is taking longer to charge full though, hoping its just because its the first charge since updating. but the battery was insane. it used like 4% with non-stop net use on 4g over an hour

  • Elaine

Myrtle Beach, SC. Still waiting! Really need battery power improvement.

    • Lacey

I didn’t even wait for the OTA to hit my phone. I found it online and my phone has been working even better than it ever has.

go the tmo store and ask for it. make sure you backup everything on your phone storage. microSD is safe

Almost mid November and still no gingerbread love! What the hell??!!! This OTA roll out was supposed to start in the summertime. Here we are almost 6 months later and still no gingerbread. I contacted HTC and they told me it was T-Mobile that is holding things up. Is there a way to get the “official” OTA update online someplace? I don’t want to root and I would prefer not going to the store since it’s my understanding that they would wipe your phone clean. Wouldn’t want to go through the re-install process with so many apps.

  • goldenboyrb

I had to go to T-Mobile store to get the 2.3 update (impatient enough). backup all apps, and the rep will insert the microSD for the update. i notice a significantly better battery life. I am still waiting on my sister’s MT4G to get her update OTA. 6 months later (from June), and still no update. Whose fault is this? T-Mo or HTC?

  • superman

My mt4g is rooted. if i update to the newest version, will i lose my root. I don’t want to lose and then have wait for an update to root again. ( running 2.2.1). looking for stable flash rom that all apps will transfer. I hate that when i use cyranmod7 that 85% of apps don’t show up.

Went to store in Memphis, TN and they acted like they didn’t know what I was talking about when I asked for the update. Still no OTA and it’s almost 2012. Phone not rooted.

I received my update about 5 days ago. Its definitely a big difference. Faster, display is more enhanced and detailed. Prior to, my phone kept pausing. Now I admit, Tmobile finally got it right.

  • Antonio Alvarado

I just got the update yesterday. I went back to the old market. Any way on how to go back to the new one?

  • Austin

I went into a tmobile store in, topanga canyon, ca a few weeks ago, and brought my phone in for an in store update. They did it, my girlfriend and I went shopping and to my surprise it was android 2.3.4, I thought that they would only do a 2.3.3 update in the store, I’ve noticed a significant battery improvement, usually when I have gps and my maps open, the battery usually lasts a few hours, but now it lasts a day and half with the same use and a full 16 hours with heavy use, i.e. wifi, games, etc… there are things that I don’t like about the swype keyboard, it took me a while to get used to and the upright virtual keyboard, well I don’t like the placement of the speaking input, I always press it, when I’m trying to type, a period or apostrophe, I also don’t like the way it highlights words, but… It’s a small price to pay for the extended battery life, I do, however like the keyboard in landscape mode…. I have a question though, I am running android 2.3.4, I got a notification for a system update to 2.32.5.x is this a downgrade or or this different from the operating system update?

  • jclare

Hi. I just updated the software this morning. I was wondering how long it usually takes to reboot? I updated it at around 11:00am and it’s now 2:00pm… I’m kind of worried that it basically did something wrong with my phone, because it says it should only take 10-15 mins. Did I do something wrong?
