Samsung Galaxy R and Galaxy Xcover officially announced

Today’s a big day for Samsung. The company just announced not one but two new Galaxy devices. The first one, the Samsung Galaxy R, is a slightly cheaper version of the popular Galaxy S II phone. While the other one, the Galaxy Xcover, is the company’s answer to that ever-important question: “Which phone would help me survive during the inevitable zombie apocalypse?”

Like we said, the Galaxy R is a less advanced version of the Galaxy S II. The phone trades the Galaxy S II’s Super AMOLED Plus screen, 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU and 8 MP camera for a Super Clear LCD screen, a 1 GHz Tegra 2 dual-core CPU and a 5 MP camera. The rest of the Galaxy R’s specs include:

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 4.19-inch screen with a 800×480 pixel resolution
  • 2 MP front-facing camera
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 8 GB of internal memory
  • 1650 mAh battery

Not bad for a phone that’s supposed to be sold for less than the Galaxy S II. Sadly, the Galaxy R is not coming to the US anytime soon. Instead, the device will be blessing our Europeans and Asian friends with its presence. However, you can quench your thirst for a high-end affordable phone by watching a video of the Galaxy R below. Brought to you by the fine people at NVIDIA. Enjoy.

If big and fragile smartphones are not your cup of tea, then the Samsung Galaxy Xcover is surely the droid you’re looking for. The IP67 certified super phone is resistant to water, dust, mud and even drops against hard surfaces. If you find yourself under water a lot, you’ll be happy to know that you can use the Galaxy Xcover at a depth of one meter for half an hour. That should be more than enough time to watch half an episode of Top Gear while sitting at the bottom of your pool.

Even though Samsung has indeed officially announced the Galaxy Xcover, details about the device are a bit scarce at the moment. We do know however that it has 3.65-inch screen, a 3.2 MP camera with LED flash and runs Android 2.3. If you’re in the mood for a rugged Android phone that you can shower with, you’ll be able to buy a Samsung Galaxy Xcover in Germany this October.

So what say you dear Europeans readers? Will it be affordable and slim or rugged and apocalypse-ready? Let us know in the comments.

So, when you get sued for copying Apple… you start copying HTC?

who invented the rectangle ? i say theyre all copying the rectangle, that lawsuit is going to be spectacular !

  • ihatefanboys

Ahhh yes, a phone that can survive that unlikely fall into dog poop, just needs a good wiping. lol

Well, guess more options can only mean a stronger Android.. but nothing there interests me.

But isn’t there a Galaxy S2 alternative called Galaxy S Plus?

    • Dirge

No, that was just a Galaxy S variant, not Galaxy S II.

I’m really amazed by the latest products from Samsung, specifically the GS II, and now the Galaxy R and XCover. Will Apple go after Samsung on these 2 devices for lawsuits because of any sh*t come out from their head? Cheers…and welcome the 2 new and wonderful devices from Samsung to the Android family.

Seriously if you trip the internal water damage sensor then its a big FAIL on Samsung and your phone insurance company trying to deny you service due to “water damage.”

I swear its a manufactures defect if I get water damage!!
