ASUS Transformer Prime could go on sale with Honeycomb next week, Android 4.0 to follow

ASUS Transformer Prime

The world’s first quad-core Android tablet could go on sale as early as next week, but don’t expect it to ship with Android 4.0. We were already expecting the Transformer Prime to be announced on November 9, and ASUS CEO Jonney Shih hinted that Ice Cream Sandwich would be coming to the EeePad family sooner than we thought. But a company Facebook posting (yeah I know) reveals that these devices will be upgradedable to Android 4.0.

ASUS likely could have delayed the launch of the Transformer Prime to make sure it shipped with Android 4.0, but my guess is they wanted it on sale as soon as possible to hit their 2011 goal of shipping 2 million EeePad tablets. Expect the Transformer Prime to be ready for purchase from online retailers in the coming weeks.

I know which Android tablet I’m getting for Christmas.

Very tempted to buy this quad core beast!

Me too! I hope it lives up to the hype. Hopefully we will have one to review soon. I can’t wait to see how it matches up with all the Tegra 2 tablets.

      • Brian Campbell

I hope it’s really amazing, because I’m about to sell my Acer Iconia Tab A500 for this bad boy.

      • M3rc Nate

I do too, all i need is for it be released, officially given a month date for its 4.0 update, and a great review.

Do you have any clue as to when we will hear anything at all about other second gen tablets like Samsung 10.1 (2) and Xoom 2? I worry about buying the first 4.0 / second gen tablet (Transformer Prime) then those others coming out and blowing it outta the water.

Quit re-posting that in the comments constantly!

How on earth is your number a 90? I figured getting downranked would lead to a lower rep number… guess I should re-read the write up.

We just pushed a new change where down votes will affect your rank.

Awesome! Thanks for the update Angie!

Ah, very true. No way this thing launches with Android 4.0 before the Galaxy Nexus though. I’d be surprised if ASUS updates it to 4.0 this year.

      • Slith

That has been my worry this whole time. Google would want ICS out there on phones before the tablets, just to splash the bigger market.

    i hate you guys !

    • stanly

We are not to found of you either.

  • WarDrake

If this happens to be true… i’m gonna be poor the rest of November, because i’m not passing up on this monster!

  • http://klout.com/#/SliestDragon SliestDragon

I have waited for this tablet to come out to enter into the tablet world. Really hope it meets our(and my) expectations. :)

    • WarDrake

      IT’s a transformer, a Prime and it’s powered by Kal-El
i don’t think any company is brave enough to fail to deliver after using those names ^_^

  • Nathan

I want this for Christmas =)

  • Futureboy

What I want to know is, will there be a Transformer Prime Slider? I like the idea of the dock but I’m not super crazy about carrying around both pieces (having to dock and undock). For me, the convince of the slide out keyboard (despite the extra weight) is very appealing.

    • http://klout.com/#/SliestDragon SliestDragon

Most likely the Eee pad slider will be updated sometime next year.

      • Futureboy

I hope you are right and there was enough interest and sales to warrant updating it.

  • metafor

I am very much looking forward to a Tegra 3 tablet, however, I think I’ll wait until the update to ICS is actually available before purchase. It’s either this or a Galaxy Tab 10 (whatever the Tegra 3 version will be called).

  • CJ84

if it has ics i’m gettin this for christmas!

  • Lamar

I have been waiting for Asus to release a new tablet looks like they hit it on the head with this one. I plan to buy it and see.

  • 4TOPS

This may be the one tablet that makes me stand in line at my local bestbuy

and hand over my hard earned ca$h

  • Koolio

It’s looking like its gonna be either this or the XOOM 2 for me. But I think Ill go with this one because of its longer battery life.

  • Nexy

I’m giving samsung until February 5 to announce the third gen galaxy tab. If not then I know which tab will be my next, come on Sammy I want my next tab to be a galaxy.

  • aj

Yeah if im going to spend money on a tablet might as well have somewhat close to the power of a laptop/netbook.

  • Mocha K

I might pick up one of these

  • Dr.Carpy

At first I wanted this tablet. However, after reading about it the last couple weeks, it has now become a necessity! If this is as good as or better than it’s predecessor, this bad boy will do big things! I hope this is priced well, which After fedex

I’ve never really been an early adopter so I may hang back a little until I’ve read some journalist reviews and some general user opinions. I’m with the quad core proc, the whole Android UI runs as smooth as silk. Even though Asus seem to be very good with updates, I’ll probably even hang back until Asus release the ICS update.

  • Steve Nutt

Ah, Christmas bonus you are well spent… ;)

  • Doug

I’m still waiting for my original Transformer to be returned to me by Asus – they’ve had it for 8 weeks now. All that failed was the power switch :( This was the result of it being ‘fixed’ the first time – a week ago… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Op0DDElkaM

At this rate, the new one will be out before I get my old one back!

  • Darkseider

I absolutely LOVE my Transformer so this will make a nice addition to the family. Once ICS hits and both units should see a substantial increase in performance as well due to GPU acceleration and better multicore support! Can’t wait!

  • William

Here’s hoping ASUS is going to do a global release of the product so we in Canada or elsewhere don’t have to wait until we are able to acquire one of these tabs. It has the right processor and on Nov 9th me thinks we will find out that is not all the surprises they have for us. Get ready to be impressed !!

  • russlee

amazing piece of high tech engineering

i am already competing for one on its (official forum), you can win this tablet there!

That’s actually a smart effort to rectify what their fail in previous transformer marketing strategy initially..this time they want to make sure to capture the market while hype is there..
