It’s nights like this when insomnia is not so bad after all. Samsung has decided to give us a late night treat: a showing of what’s to come during the Samsung Unpacked announcement at CTIA in San Diego. And it is big. Yes, loyal readers, it looks like we finally have the Nexus Prime‘s first official glimpse, straight from the manufacturer.

Samsung has just released a commercial for their announcement at CTIA, and for a few seconds at the end of the video, you can see a device with a curved screen (like the Nexus S). We are quite sure this is the insanely anticipated Samsung Nexus Prime, which made a supposed appearance this morning, courtesy of Mr. Blurrycam.

Aside from the curved screen, we can also see some pin connectors, which could be for a dock. No other major details are given in the video, but now we know what to expect! Taylor and I will be right there covering this event, so definitely stay tuned for more details coming next week (October 11).

Like us, you have to be excited after all those long months of waiting. Hit the comments section to express those feelings! We know many of you are about to explode.

Update 1: Our own Dustin chopped up some images to compare the Nexus family below.

Update 2

Samsung has recently updated the video to show a couple extra scenes. One of them is another “perfect combination,” which displays a bride and a groom.

There is also a new comment at the end of the video. It states: “Always ahead of the curve.” We assume that this is a play on words with the Nexus Prime’s curved screen and the fact that it is “better” than a certain device that was just announced yesterday – the iPhone 4S.

Throwing “curve” balls, aren’t we, Samsung? Check out the new video posted right below, and let’s hope that the video keeps being updated. Hopefully next time with more details about the device!

The leaked screen shot looks more legit now. Take a look near the top right. It looks like the power button from the device in the video.

    • @jayefef

      D’oh. I MEAN TOP LEFT!!!!!!

      • frank

the bumb on the right side of the new picture is probably the bottom of the phone. widths make your supposed power button on the right side of the phone.
so I thing it must be a other button.

        • irishrally

The leaked shot showed the volume button on the left side, just like the Nexus S.

    • http://droidsamurai.blogspot.com DroidSamurai

Actually, if you look at the leaked shot, the phone clearly has a rather dramatic curly profile.

  • Techrocket9

Someone please wake me up on the 11th. I don’t want to wait that long.

    • kazahani

I’m going to have a different one of these for each day of the week.

I’m going to get an old western style gunbelt and have one holstered on each hip.

  • Noriega713

    Great…now I can’t sleep because I’m TOO excited about this =) … That’s one SEXY device…eat your heart out apple … muahahahaha

    • WarDrake

They’ve been eating their hearts out from quite a while ago… what do you think all that patent war is? they’re just lashing out ^_^

      • Noriega713

True… I was just caught up in the moment and that’s the only thing that popped in my head…lol… I can haz forgivness?

  • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

it looks amazing. and is it just me or does the glass front look bigger than the metal back. if you bring the brightness up full on a still of the phone it looks like it to me

    • WarDrake

high res image shows not. it’s actually the same size…

      • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

shame :( that would be an interesting form factor..

    • orvile

that’s the glass from the tablet sitting directly behind the phone

  • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

heres a still so you can see what i mean

  • Richard Yarrell

Samsung is a big plus. Verizon is a big minus what does that all mean??? It means GOOGLE/SPRINT/NEXUS PRIME…

    • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

remember its a nexus branded phone it will be available to all carriers very soon after release

      • DaveC

Nice thought but not historically true.

        • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

ah its difficult for me to know as i’m uk and it is available to all here.

        • Futureboy

The Nexus S launched on T-Mobile and it took a while, but eventually got to Sprint and ATT. It never made it to Verizon.

      • LB

Why do people continue saying that? As if the other nexus phones were available on all carriers.

    • CactusCat

Gosh RY, why don’t you just sit this one out? You’re supposed to be having orgasms over your EVO, not this one (the Prime). Or do you have some wierd idea that this is going to be another EVO? I can easily recall you calling Samsung names and that HTC was far superior and that your beloved EVO will pimp slap everything in existence. Please…. sigh.

    • Rushi

This morning when I read this I assumed I was still either a) still asleep and this was a dream or b) still drunk from last night. Then I saw Richard Yarrell trolololololol’ing about sprint. I now know 2 things – 1) This is real 2) I’m not stuck in an inception

      • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

i dont understand how he is trolling… you all favour a specific carrier over in the colonies. so does he.

        it was a considered post…

      • Cwalden21

hahaha man i gotta agree with you on that one..and i’ve got sprint too! haha Richard the sprint troll haha that dude seriously is obsessed with em

  • cb2000a

    I drooled a little….

  • SherlockHomeboy

    I can’t wait!

  • shriker

Those pins are for the charger, not the dock. Think pre/macbook style magnetic charger !!

    • Nathan

that sounds cool or at least neat to have

    • Dave Clary (@dclaryjr)

Charger and dock are not mutually exclusive terms. One of my favorite things about my Nexus One is the connector free desk top dock (which charges the phone).

    • seven2k

thats what im thinking…wonder what the other connector will…or if we even need another connectr?

    • irishrally

Maybe. I’m thinking more landscape dock. As someone mentioned docks charge too. I’m sure there will be a micro USB at the bottom though. It would be bad news and appleish to use some proprietary charger with no micro USB.

    • cb2000a

Oh great another patent law suit….

  • J2x

Wow, that thing is thin! The curve looks super elegant!!! Samsung FINALLY in an aluminum chassis! iphone4s what??? Now, THIS is something to get excited about!

  • kwills88

    That’s what she said.

    • kwills88

I apologize, but I had to, now google, let’s show apple how to wow a crowd.

  • J2x

Great commercial, unlike those stupid robot droid ones. Really catchy toon too. Please don’t screw this one up!

  • Rubrewskey

This better come to all carriers and we can all be happy and be one happy Android family.

  • Lulu

    I’m SO getting this phone.

It’s about the time to replace my Vibrant.

  • Mr Guzz

    A great Ad…..Nexus/ICS

  • http://www.troppotogo.it Gadgetman

Liking the curves, but we need more info, can’t wait for the full spec.

  • PrimeTime

This video is getting me aroused. However, what I’m really looking forward to is the TV ad: Breakaway, Heatwave, Landquake, Skyfall and Topspin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_thirteen_Transformers#Revenge_of_the_Fallen) all regrouping, to the theme tune of Daft Punk’s “Prime Time of Your Life”, to form… Nexus Prime! That’s when you’ll see some real geeky jizz in my pants

  • tN0

This video is using the same font that we saw on the leaked screen shot from the device.

It is a new font for Samsung and it is not the Droid font from Google. But it is definitively the same!

    • http://droidsamurai.blogspot.com DroidSamurai

As much as I love to see and get the Prime, the font actually looks kind of … may I say, ugly …

      • tN0

I agree and it is strange that there is a new font. Does it mean that the Nexus Prime will not come with vanilla Android?

Samsung uses the Helvetica font on their Galaxy products but may change to this new font because of the ongoing complaints from Apple, who also uses Helvetica as the system font on iOS.

      • http://madeyoulook.com Modey

        No, Your ugly :@

  • Panatella

“explode out of your seat and start jumping around your room” pretty much sums up my situation. Can’t wait no more! My carriers sent me an email this morning that it was time for a new phone in the coming month, so all the pieces start falling together beautifully!

  • Nathan

can’t wait to see it in less then a week from now :D hopefully it will be epic

now the only question is whether this beast will be available on all carriers !

    • Interpol91

      It better be!

  • Protoje

am i the only 1 who didnt watch this video less than 5 time?

  • Corey Myaweather

  • Nate B.

Samsung and Google for the win until death do you part.

  • optimaljam

You know if they put a quad core chip in this apple will go bankrupt! even without the quad core apple will be hurt! this is amazing!!!

  • Nate B.

I’m sure Google and Sammy wanted to wait until the 11th for you to get any glimpse, and when they seen what Apple did, they all looked around in a moment of silence. Burst out laughing and said lets put the nail in the cofine.

    • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

i actually laughed aloud after reading this. can see all the board members watching the engadget live feed of the apple keynote in apprehention then bursting out laughing.

  • Nate B.

Oh, and every comment here deserves a plus.

  • Ross

I’m a little confused about where the device actually ends…

I made a quick image so someone can confirm. Does it end at points 1? Or does it end at points 2, and the black is just part of the background…

    • http://None CaribGrackle

Points 2 bro, points 1 would be weird don’t ya think?

    • danny

      Points 2 are a tablet ;)

  • Tico4674

I wonder if Google using Samsung will become a trend or is Google simply going to go with the best manufacturer at the time! If htc or moto come out with better hardware will they be considered for the next version?

    • Hey you

Lg gonna be the best android maker so we will see lg next year

  • powersimon

Yes, everything is ok, it look so damn cool, but… a curved display? Are we sure? How could we watch videos on it?

    • Nate B.

Umm, just like before my friend lol. The Nexus S has a curved screen. It looks a little more pronounced on the Prime but I’m sure it’ll be less noticeable strait on when looking at it.

    • Johan Ribbing

Yeah it looks REALLY curved. If you look at the photo above where they compare it to the Nexus S you can see that the Nexus S only has a curved screen while the Prime is curved on the back as well.

Don’t know what I think about that. I mean, what’s the point of a curved device to start with? Isn’t it really taking up more volume in your pocket? Or maybe less if you put it “around” you thigh. Still, hmm…

      • xsynth

That’s the only thing that could put me off. I’ve got the NS, and the curve is fine in use/talking, but when I put it down or carry it along with something else it just irks me that it doesn’t sit flush with anything haha. Damn OCD lol

I will literally cry if tmo does not get it. Especially after they blogged there commitment to Android and bringing quality phones. there reason for not getting the IPhone

  • ben dover

    this changes everything… ;-P

    • Nate B.

  • Louis

Iphone my ass. This’s what you call a smartphone!! IWantThisPhoneNow.com. Sexy and hot is an understatement. I don’t care which carrier is gonna have it, I am jumping on the first one that releases it. Common Oct 11th! It’s Prime Time!!

  • GetGood

Does anyone know if the specs of both the SCH-i515 and GT-i9250 will be the same, aside from the mobile radios? I just get the scary feeling that the Verizon version just won’t be as outstanding or something…

  • http://droidsamurai.blogspot.com DroidSamurai

You know what’s funny about this? There are rumors about the new iPhone having a big screen, and a tear drop curly profile, but the iPhone 4S has none of those. But they accurately described the Prime!

  • http://droidsamurai.blogspot.com DroidSamurai

    Please, Verizon, please carry this!!!

    • Stewart

I seriously hope that Verizon carries it because I don’t wanna settle with anything else. Ugh.

      • cb2000a

        They will…The Droid Prime..

  • NitroExpressNY

This one will S**T on the iPhone 4S***T

  • Nate B.

You can see the evolution in the generation of the Nexus when you look at the updated pictures. I have a good feeling it’ll be on every carrier and the Verizon one.will be different in terms of overplayed with a new TouchWiz or bloated with V apps, or something. Exclusive to one carrier? Never that. That would be a fail on Amy manufacturer. That’s why Apple is moves to Sprint. Only way to compete with Android. I just hope its in a timely manner from the announcement to the release on several carriers.

    • Nate B.

Edit due to auto correct messing me up(ironic)

You can see the evolution from the first Nexus to now in the updated part of the article. Its amazing. I’m still a little unsure of how the Verizon one will pan out. I assume it’ll be overlayed with a new TouchWiz over IC? Or bloated with V apps? Not sure. Either way I know one thing for sure, it won’t be exclusive to them alone. Not the Pure Nexus phone. They may be the additional carrier to receive it but exclusive, no. Maybe the version they’re getting is. I want the Pure Nexus Prime. I’m sure it’ll be on several carriers. I just hope its in a timely manner from the announcement, release date, and carriers release date if they vary. It shouldn’t. I say two weeks Irene of Oct

  • seven2k

    Cant wait…i need this phone!

  • Dre2PHRESH

Excited!!!! I want this phone now!!!! But I wonder since I just ordered the Epic Touch 4g will I be able to exchange for the Nexus Prime when it comes out? Sprint hasn’t even shipped me the phone yet so my 14 days to return will start a few days before the Nexus Prime is unveiled. If not it will be on craiglist, lol.

    • irishrally

Wait until the 11th to find out about various carrier releases. You’ll still be within 14 days then.

  • irishrally

    Ho … ly … crap!

  • http://None CaribGrackle

Such a short video, just a glimpse of the phone… yet I’m beyond being excited I just want this thing to come out NOW. Apple needed a fake video to get all ready for their next phone, just to get those dreams bashed.

We get this official glimpse and we already knew we can expect something big.

  • http://coroflot.com/mdilella IDMD11

    This is my next phone

    • Nathan

      My too! :D

Very disappointed in the rumors i am starting to read more and more of… The Nexus will be a Verizon exclusive for atleast few months after launch!! That means at best it will hit other carriers early next year? If this is the case. then let it be known that sadly, i will have to pass on it.. By early next year quad core rumors will strengthen and something better may be on the horizon. I cannot afford to switch carriers.. Big Red is just to much for me to justify the switch.

    I shed a few tears as i typed :(

    • Nathan

well I don’t want that either and I will not switch either as well. However in my case it will forces me to wait for my upgrade.

    • irishrally

Same here. I was even looking online at Verizon plans yesterday, even the pre paid ones. I pay $60 on tmobile, no contract, unlimited data, unlimited text, 500 minutes. I’d have to pay $90 on Vzn for a comparable plan. I got the Nexus One and Nexus S both on release, day and it will suck royally if I have to wait in agony for 2-3 months to get the Prime. Life’s tough, huh ;)

    • BiGMERF

did you guys shed a tear too , as you typed ? :(

  • DownSouthLivin

It’s funny how a 29 second video can be more awe inspiring than an entire Apple unveiling. This just shows that the power has shifted from Apple to Google/Samsung where it rightfully belongs.

  • Alias_Venker

I think were looking at two things in the picture that says something big is coming. One being the black part which is the phone resting the sliver piece below it. Which is what?Guess will have to wait till the 11th. :D

  • Gold D Roger

My dream phone is finally here \o/…

  • xoldier

Finally we get to see what we should expect. I am happy about the fact that it does not bear a plasticky look to it.

Given the fact that there are android phones in the market (even now) that bear stronger hardware specs than the iPhone 4S announced yesterday, I believe when it comes to end user experience, the ease, smoothness and stability of iPhone has yet to be surpassed. This is mostly due to the fact that Apple designs its software for a specific hardware. In laymen terms, the software fits like a glove rather than 1-size fit all (with adjustments).

Now as far as Nexus Prime goes: This is officially a 3rd generation Android phone and Google is definitely focused on polishing up the Android OS. This brings me to a conclusion that Google went with Samsung to build a Nexus device second time in a row to better integrate the hardware with the software (at least for the flagship device). Best case scenario, competition will be thrown clean out of the water by delivering something extraordinary to consumers such as myself who have been with Android since the day G1 came out. I am hoping that when I get to use Nexus Prime, I’ll ‘finally’ be able to say that, “This phone delivers better end user experience -not just the hardware specs and features- in terms of stability, agility and ease than the latest and greatest iPhone out there.”

Now I’ll get ready for the flames!

YES!!! I SEE IT!!! I thought of it but couldn’t put it together in my head at first.

  • kwills88

Now I can finally say this…I like my phone just how I like my women, with curves

  • Interpol91

When I first saw this I was like “no way!” I cannot wait for their unveiling. It will certainly outshine Apple’s pathetic attempt at the iPhone 4S.

  • Galen20K

I feel like I can’t even wait the few days until the announcement I’m THAT excited!!

  • kwills88

I keep coming back here just craving for more nexus news, being this excited can be a double edged sword, on one end we can be overwhelmed, another we can end up like apple fans…but I have faith in google and samsung, they have yet to disappoint us.

  • Ax

Samsung squandered the Nexus S and I’m pretty sure they’ll do the same with the Nexus Prime. Google and HTC need to come together again.

  • Nathan

the 100th comment and my score is 300!!! :D

  • IoNz

Does anybody know what the 3 brass looking dots are? I was thinking some new type of charging, Whether it be wireless or magnetically connected like the Macs? intriguing…

    • irishrally

Probably for a landscape style dock, similar to the Nexus One dock, but landscape.

I think this phone will bring the best of the Nexus One and Nexus S into one badass phone.

Do we have any idea if the Prime will be a world phone with CDMA and GSM capability?

  • monlosez

Could it be the screen is extending beyond the body? Small phone with big screen.

  • Angie Strickland

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting the lighting in this image. I think the phone is pretty standard and doesn’t extend oddly as some people are thinking. Basically, where the lighter silver ends, so must the other black half of the body and the screen (well the screen would a little inside of that to be more clear).

    • Interpol91

When I first saw the image I thought “wow this is one radical design” but as I looked at it more I noticed what you commented on.

  • Brian Campbell

I wonder…I just bought the HTC Sensation 4G, but should I sell it on ebay and get the Nexus Prime??

(IT’S A JOKE GUYS. STEVE WAS A GREAT MAN! May he rest in peace!)

    • Nate B.

      A bad joke at that.

  • kwills88

This render makes a lot of sense to me, the phone don’t looks so curved when u look at it this way

  • NerveBag

Am I the ONLY one who doesn’t want a curved phone… OR a Samsung phone? As much as I love vanilla Android, dedicated OS upgrades and wicked specs (I bought the Bionic — and it’s an amazing upgrade from my OG Droid. I love it, pentile screen be damned.), everyone I know who has a Sammy phone has problems with it. With the recent Googorola marriage, I think I’ll hang on to my Bionic until Motorola comes out with a Nexus. Not hating on Samsung. I have a 67″ Sammy DLP TV and love it. But their phones? Meh. And that curve? Seems like a pain in the butt.

I’ll definitely be checking out the reviews, and I’ll definitely eat crow and buy the Prime at retail if it lives up to the hype, but I just can’t get behind a Samsung phone at this point. We’ll see.

Just my two cents. Again… NOT hating on Samsung. Just going with my experience.

    • Nate B.

Lol your experience? You mentioned a lot on what your friends have and not what you have owned that was made from Samsung mobile wise. I’ve had great experience with my Nexus S 4G and Epic Touch 4G. They clearly are on top of the game.

  • Kate

This changes nothing. Im getting the iPhone 4S instead. Android ühones are always buggy, remeber the other nexus craphones??

    iPhone 4S here i come.

    My thoughts

    - That black thing ISN’T a tablet! It’s just an effect to enlighten the beam.
    - Curved screen ISN’T that curved, and even if it was, it won’t be that dramatic in your pocket.
    - It will still have a microUSB connector for standard charge (remember thar agreement for european countries?)
    - Those three dots are for a standard dock with side contact, not a landscape one. (wish there was some tecnology to use those for charging the phone with your thumb or something)
    - I’ll have to sell some body organs to bring it here to South America, but still i’m SOO EXCITED!

(sory if my english is that bad)

    • meh…

      just that…the last comment…I don’t find too hilarious…

I shouldn’t be the one saying this…take it easy on the jokes…they do sell missing kids organs too…

    • irishrally

I agree except for the portrait dock comment, for three reasons (since you seem to like lists):

      1. It would be a poor mechanical design to have to push the phone side ways into the contacts on the portrait dock without the help of gravity to keep it in place.

      2. Samsung loves landscape docks. See the entire Galaxy S line and the Nexus S docks.

      3. The issue Samsung has had in the past with their landscape docks is that the power button rests on the bottom of the landscape dock causing all kinds of issues and unwanted power button pushes. You will notice in the screen shot that the power button is flush/recessed now with the chassis, unlike the Nexus S etc, but the volume button look almost identical to the Nexus S. They probably would have stayed with a Nexus S style power button if they didn’t need to fix this issue.

      • irishrally

… well I guess they fixed the power button issue by putting the contacts on the opposite side than the power button.

        • irishrally

I’ve apparently lost my mind. Disregard last post and when you’re done, disregard this one.

  • Greg

    I am thrilled.

I’ve been off-contract since a few months before the Nexus One was released, so I intend to get the best version of this phone, regardless of carrier.
