Ice Cream Sandwich port for Nexus S available for download

As soon as Ice Cream Sandwich is ready to roll out, the Nexus S will undoubtedly be the first device to be updated. (The Galaxy Nexus will be coming out within the next couple weeks, so Android 4.0 should be hitting the Nexus S right around then as well). While two to three weeks doesn’t seem like long to wait, not everyone has that kind of patience. Especially not the Android hacking community.

Available now over in the XDA Developers forums, an Ice Cream Sandwich port has been successfully conjured up for the Samsung Nexus S. There’s no face unlock, some of the icons are missing and there have been some reported issues with data connectivity. But otherwise, things work well. After going through several pages of comments, it doesn’t seem like this port is much of a daily driver. More than anything, it just gives Nexus S owners a look at what’s in store.

For those of you adventurous enough to try this, keep in mind that rooting your device will void your warranty and, though highly unlikely if you follow directions carefully, could brick your device. We take no responsibility for damage to your device caused by the rooting process. To take a look at all the instructions and to download the port, head on over to XDA now.

What do you think? Are you going to wait until ICS is official? Or will you be trying some of the unofficial ports as they come out?

There’s no hacking community like Android’s. Period.

I’m trying to hold off on installing all of the 4.0 features that have been ported over so by the time I get the galaxy nexus, it won’t feel old hat!

  • xsynth

As much as I want to play around with it on my phone, I’m going to wait for the official version. I’d rather wait a little longer and have a fully working version with all the bells and whistles.

The port for the Nexus S 4G is a daily driver. Check them out at androidcentral. It gave me reason to take my Nexus out of the box again. Still waiting for the real thing. I personally think Google made the wait to long for the release of the Galaxy Nexus. Should of came out a week or two after it was released. They need to feed the masses. IC should of been pushed out on the same day or a day or two before public release. I really don’t understand the waiting point. What does that do for you?

i’ve recieved my pre order form that says i can get my nexus on november the 16th for £60 ($90) on a £31 ($46) a month contract.

    what do you think?

    • thel0nerang3r

That’s odd, currently 1BGP is trading for 1.6USD…. so, something tells me you are making stuff up.

      • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

ok so i based my conversion on £1-$1.5

i dont have to make it up.

If I had a nexus s I would just wait and use miui or cyanogenmod

    • http://caseyfriday.com Casey Friday

Agreed. I’m using MIUI on my G2, and it is ridiculously good. At first glance, I didn’t like it, but after using it for a few weeks now, it’s just really stable and really good looking. GREAT ROM.

      • aj

Yeah glad you agree. I love the Miui rom. The theming engine is amazing. tons of different lock screens. in fact i feel Miui has had a ICS/Honeycomb esque feel to it. So much more to as well

    • Al

Or just wait for Miui to bring ICS even.. best of both worlds :)

  • K

I believe this is the dump of the previous leaked build of ICS on Nexus S

  • JamieB

XDA members have cooked up an SDK ICS port up for the N1 as well, btw! Prettty much the same issues. Not much of a daily, but pretty awesome non the less.

  • Nathan

I would do the root in a heart beat but sadly I don’t have the nexus s but I’ll get the next best thing galaxy nexus =)

  • Rashad

Another step closer to ICS on my Nexus one!

  • dabious

I will most definitely be waiting for the OTA.

  • nory826

You guys with the nexus s are lucky ;) they are working on a port for the sensation right now. To the devs that made this possible, I say great job and thank you for your commitment. You guys are awesome!

They should make a port for the Atrix ;)

That would be great. Haha. Well it would be if mine wasn’t stolen :’(

I think I’m just goin to wait for the update on my nexus s and hold out on the GN …… with all the dual core hype out now I think by next yr the following nexus line should most def have quad core with a good amount of battery life to keep it goin all day long …….. I’m satisfied with my NS for now…… but then again I might have the GN in my hand and not wana let it go

  • SherlockHomeboy

Good to see ports starting to trickle out but I’ll still be waiting for the complete release before I try ICS.

I can’t wait to have a look at all the new features the ICS has for developers. I’ve already made a short overview here: http://k-selezneva.blogspot.com/2011/10/dessert-for-developers-some-ice-cream.html. But I do want to see them with my own eyes! I think, I won’t wait for the full version.

A little slow and buggy, but woth to see it. This is beta 3, added today.

  • sylar

Hmm so not a daily drive hmmm. Well I guess its mostly for fun then, but it would be cool.

And I _just_ sold my Nexus S…. figures…. Cool to see a port out there already. Android devs move fast. :)

Flashed this baby on my NS last night. Most things are working really well. Worth exploring and trying out before the official ROM is released. Some things not working: menu key on Home screen of the stock launcher doesn’t work (just use another Launcher :) ), bluetooth, nfc, gps, camera is flaky (no zoom, unlike what Google said on 10/19). Will use it all day today and see if I can see more bugs =).
