Google and Samsung delay Ice Cream Sandwich, Nexus Prime announcement

Just a few short days after Google and Samsung unleashed a teaser video announcing that “Something BIG is coming,” Google and Samsung have announced that they have decided to postpone the announcement of both the Nexus Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich. In a joint statement by the two companies, both Google and Samsung feel this is not the right time to announce a new product.

We’ve now received official confirmation from Samsung’s PR Director Kim Titus.

Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We would ask for the understanding of our clients and media for any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due courseKim TitusSamsung

And ComputerWorld got an update directly from Google. It looks like this is related to the passing of Steve Jobs.

We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing.SpokespersonGoogle

Before you get out the torches and pitchforks, this doesn’t mean that the actual release date of the Nexus Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich have been delayed, and we still expect both the next Nexus and the next version of Android to launch by the end of November as former Google CEO Eric Schmidt promised exactly a month ago.

Though we won’t be seeing the next big thing in Android at CTIA on October 11, it seems our wait won’t be much longer. We will keep you updated once we have more information about a rescheduled event.

Considering this is the perfect time to hit apple where it hurts, the only reason I can see behind the announcement delay is production issues. Any other ideas?

    • Kenneth

Um, out of respect for Steve Jobs…

      • dbest180

Jobs is dead and it should be business as usual. I highly doubt that would be the reason.

        • jamerson90

Out of respect. That is the whole deal. Google uses a lot of apple computers, and a lot of them even use iPhones.

        • TWiT Commander

To all Apple haters out there, GROW UP!

There is a subtle distinction between enemy and adversary. Google and Apple are adversaries, not enemies.

And learn to show some respect for the dead.

Some may opine that Steve Jobs was a prick, and guess what, computing is what it is today for who he was. He took computers out of the lab and away from he nerds, and repackaged them for the masses. That’s critically important. Without that, even the Internet would be drastically different than what it is today. The foundations of the Internet were built on NEXT computers.

Most technologies might suit frequent visitors to this site, the alpha nerds. Most companies develop technologies and then try to create demand for it. But you know what Apple does? They see what customers need, and refine *existing* technologies (some their own, some from others) and create perfect products that serve their purpose.

Well said, TWiT commander. It’s sad that there’s so much hate out there.

He wasnt freaking Jesus. Would Apple have delayed a product if the CEO of Samsung or Google Died? I think not.

        • Maisum

That doesn’t mean we stoop down to their level.

If Jobs was the reason, I applaud them for it.

Stooping to their level?! This has NOTHING to do with Steve Jobs, nor should it.

this statement couldnt be more truer.

I love google as a maker of new products.

I despise google as a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE company that mistreats EVERYONE they make business with, that isnt a 13 jillion dollar deal.

jobs WAS a god, you idiots.

      • geah

        Piece of shit.

    • Ryan

I read an article on Phandroid that said it was out of respect for Steve Jobs.

      • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

Yeah, that’s what we’re thinking as well, but neither Samsung nor Google has given an official “this is why we did it”

        • Greg

I have an insane amount of respect for Steve Jobs. He was an amazing person. But that’s just it – he was a person. People die. Our culture seems to forget about this until it happens.

          • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

I don’t disagree with you. I’m thinking the funeral is 10/11, and several Google folks want to attend.

Again, this is all speculation (which is why I didn’t put it in the post), and we’ll hopefully know something soon.

            Good point @betterwithroot

Look, I don’t like a lot of the crap Apple’s been doing lately, but we all really do have to thank Steve for his contributions to consumer electronics.

I think Steve’s funeral is next week and it’s very classy and chivalrous of Samsung and Google.

Im hoping that it was because they were going to only release it for verizon but seen the complaints and now will release for all at same time lol i know im wrong but thats okay

    • RockinEvo

I’m wit you, I can’t imagine it only being a big V exclusive so what of they didn’t get a new galaxy phone.

    • Yashar

Or maybe all those specs about the cpu being 1.2 Ghz OMAP were real and after so much nagging and disappointment from people, they decided to go back and put the new Exynos in it. Just to make us satisfied !

      • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

They would have to delay the phone pretty significantly to swap out key components at this point.

  • Darkseider

Sorry but delaying the announcement out of respect for Steve Jobs is well… BULLSHIT. He was a great CEO, thinker and businessman, built an empire but its’ business as usual. Apple would not have delayed anything in respect for Eric, Sergey, Larry or Andy. Not to mention they are still litigating away looking to block whatever they can from being sold in order to maintain some market share and stay relevant. Announce it, release it, profit. Pay your respects at the funeral. Seriously… This is utter bullshit.

    • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

What if the funeral is on 10/11?

      • Darkseider

And what if it is? What the hell difference would that make? Do you think that the media, governments and corporations world wide are going to stop? Do you think for one moment if this was anyone else other than the media darling Steve Jobs there would be this much of a to do? This has gone beyond ludicrous. The man died. It is a terrible loss for his family and close friends but it should in no way effect the doing of business.

        • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

No, but I do think press are more likely to cover the funeral than a Google event,

I think folks from Google actually want to attend the funeral. Most Googlers don’t hate Steve Jobs.

    • Alex

We finally have a business minded individual in the house! I agree w/ you. Respect for a death is to be paid at a funeral, not through business practices that have the potential to bend your bottom line!

      • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

Again, what if the funeral is 10/11?

        • Alex

Then, and only then would I agree with their decision. They should also make a public statement.. no need to be humble.

          • Alex

I mean humble in the sense of not saying anything and letting people assume that the reason for the delay was out of respect for jobs. I wanted them to say such and such is the reason we delayed our announcement. Which they have now done.

        • Adam

WARNING: Lots of sarcasm and snark in this post …

If the funeral is on 10/11, I’d call it political maneuvering at its worst. It’s bad enough Jobs had to go die the day Samsung announced the Nexus event. But now, even from the grave, the guy is trying to put a damper on it by having his funeral the same day? I mean c’mon … can he not compete like everyone else? Litigation wasn’t working so he had to figure out the next best way to screw over his competitors. Dying? That’ll do the trick.

          • inviolable

They dont feel to Rush the Nexus Phone and the ICS Announcement after knowing that lots of People are very disappointed with the Apple Keynote recently

I can imagine that Google says to Sammy that..

Sammy, theres nothing to be afraid of.. Lets make people eagerly awaits ICS , LOLZ

    No, just kidding

  • charlie88

  • ihatefanboys

Perhaps delayed to work in the added announcement of ICS to be included in Google TV 2.0 ?? It is supposed to be premiering within a month.

Delayed because of Jobs = LAME

I dont understand the universal love for one of the most loathed people in tech history just because hes dead. Its like all the fake love for Michael Jackson when he died, all the people that were carrying the “child molestor” signs for years suddenly became his fans again, its fake, its lame, its fraudulent… The only thing he did for the tech world was make a blueprint of something that someone emulated but did much, much better….Microsoft did PC’s better and Android did smartphones better…if Jobs envisioned a toilet, it would probably just be a big box you shit in, cant empty without tech support, then be forced to buy a new toilet the following year because it has “air fresheners”, for almost the same price…..Android would be the one you could buy once, but flush….and an upgraded device would be self cleaning

    • http://IanSapp.com Ian S

He was not one of the most loathed people in tech history, he was an innovator who set milestones for people to follow. Our beloved Android would NOT be what it is today had it not been for the iPhone. Go look at early Android screenshots. It looked exactly like a Blackberry device, even with the full Blackberry keyboard and little screen.

We probably would not have PCs in its current form if it wasn’t for Jobs pushing the concept of the personal computer back in the 80s. Our digital music consumption could have been a lot different too if it wasn’t for the iPod, and Honeycomb tablets would have not been created had it not been for the iPad

To say that he wasn’t an important person is ridiculous. Android, the Android Market, Google Music, Google Video… these probably would have never happened if it wasn’t for the iPhone and the iTunes digital distribution movement. You should pay the man a little more respect than that.

      • xoldier

      • ihatefanboys

Dont have to, dont need to…what i said was true…..the politically correct here like u go with the flow to avoid being flamed and getting upvoted. Android is better, as i SAID, he came up with a concept that someone did better…the PC is better than the mac….. android is better than IOS….can you understand english now ? I never said he didnt THINK up things, he just never made anything of true value out of any of it…and his bitterness at Microsoft made him lock up his company into proprietary lockdown…..Apple and IOS would be much better “open-source”. Allowing customers to own every aspect of their device is better for the customers satisfaction..the company Apple shouldnt want to nickel and dime every cent out of their brainwashed customers, they should let them have it…

Honestly if Steve Jobs was as innovative as youre all praising him for, and the rest of the people that work at Apple are just followers and makers, then Apple truly is doomed.

P.S i never used itunes, it sucks, plus i really really hope that no one on these tech boards still pay for music, or really ever has since it went digital.

and one more thing…..android tablets were being made at the same time as the i-pad…there was no ipad came first deal…..android tabs while more expensive have twice the tech in them….again something android did better……stop being PC about APPLE and JOBS

  • http://blessayfromamerica.blogspot.com Guy Bailey

I do think it would be unseemly to bury a man’s life work along with his body – as the Nexus is going to do with the iPhone; so let’s wait a week or so.

  • AppleFUD

Most likely this is due out of respect for Steve Jobs.

Remember that the co-founders of Google were very good friends with him at one point, and although Jobs may have thrown tantrums about Google the co-founders of Google haven’t said a negative thing about Jobs, and in fact have always praised him.

Secondly, Google and Samsung may realize that a separate venue would give them more spot-light than doing it at CTIA.

Either way, it doesn’t mean the actual release will be delayed.

  • rqatar

You know, Google’s execs knew Steve Jobs. Maybe give it a rest calling BS here and defer to their sense of what feels right in this particular situation?

    • Steve Nutt

Agreed, respect for Steve Jobs, or for any other reason, the shouting of BS is uncalled for.

If the Google execs think this needs to wait a bit, then it needs to wait, they’re the ones in the know.

      • CactusCat

I think you said it well Steve. The shouting of BS is really uncalled for. For all you bozos that are complaining, how is the fact that they delayed the event going to affect your life? In no way!!! You complainers are a bunch of whiners, snotty-nosed brats that are fricking spoiled. If you don’t like it, then go buy an iPhone or something. You simply cannot be pleased, no matter what. Google and Sammy want the ENTIRE spotlight for this new OS and phone. They don’t want to share it with SJ’s passing and you can rest assured that the media will be covering SJ’s goings-on due to the multitude of iSheepers out there. And besides, with Sammy showing some compassion, they might get Apple to ease up on the litigation BS. Face it you guys. Your selfishness has no boundries. I only hope you wake up some day. This phone stuff is small potatoes compared to human life.
And to let you know, I’m getting this new Nexus phone as well. I want it bad. But Google and Sammy have done the right thing. But I can wait a little bit. And Google and Sammy just earned some additional respect from me.

  • Gilghemesh

I can only hope that they are delaying the launch because they realize what weak sauce TI OMAP 4460 @ 1.2 GHz and 5MP rear camera is. If the “Prime” has the BGR leaked specs, I think I rather get the Note or wait for GS III. If they had any sense, they would be using Exynos 4212 and a better than 5MP camera. I fear they don’t have enough sense. Another disappointing announcement… delayed even.

    • Jlix

You know as someone that knows a little about photography, everyone wants to talk MP. Like MP is what makes your pic better than someone elses? Well the MP works great for when you want to blow your picture up to 8×10′s and poster sizes, but it’s all the rest of the components of the camera that make the camera!

I have seen some awesome photographs taken on 2 and 3 MP cameras and seen some garbage on 18 MP cameras so stop worrying about the one number and hope that what they truly do is work on the video camera so when you video chat someone it’s not like 1998!!!

      • Gilghemesh

sAs someone who has shot more than 11,000 frame from a 21MP full frame sensor DSLR (aka Canon 5D Mark II) I think I know a bit about photography. I don’t think 5MP will do now days. I would like to see at least 8MP… ideally I would have like to seen the new 1/2.3″ 16MP sensor from Samsung in there (probably not though.) Anyway, we’ll will see what we get.

    • Chris125

then by all means wait. Those specs are by no means “weak sauce” like you say. it will be stock android so it will run more smooth than any phone out there. Look at the nexus s it still runs smoother than most dual core phones. Just saying half the specs you will never use to the max anyway. People just like to bitch.

  • Derek

Reading through these comments make me realize that some people are heartless scum of the earth, and that they have no respect for another humans life.

    • Seth Feldkamp

Hey c’mon. Would you stop bringing up the Apple labor practices already? Steve’s not even buried yet and you’re already piling on. Not cool.

      • Derek

I see you are one of the many that I refer to you should get a real life

  • Nathan

I was really looking forward to this WTH! But if it for Jobs then it should be alright but I really wanted to see it on the 11th. hopefully they show it sooner rather then later.

  • Felipe.

Yesterday there were two conflicting specs for the Nexus Prime or Galaxy Prime (whatever is called); one from BGR and the other from GSMarena.com

What if the first -lower rated- spec was a first teaser just to see how people would respond to it and seeing that everyone qualified that as a lame technical specifications sheet for a brand new Nexus phone, they decided to stop, take a deep breath and definitely go directly to the higher rated spec sheet ?

Also what makes me thing about this is that Samsung just announced a brand new Exynos chip, which may be the one included on the higher rated specs.

About Jobs respect…well…IF that day is his funeral, well it’d be very bad taste from Google to mount a show to present iPhone’s competing phone and beating it ! ;) So….out of respect…could be…, yes, it’s business as usual but, having a great PR, great presence and avoiding any “stains” so to say…just to be plain disrespectful may not be worth, as easy as that.

    Comments are welcome. Thanks !

    • asdf

I see them postponing so they could attend the funeral. I don’t see them postponing out of respect.

      • xoldier

Professionally, they maybe arch-enemies but I am sure on a personal level, these people do have a lot of respect for each other and their families. All we know (or get to see) about them is what happens on a professional level only. When it’s time for business, it’s strictly business and usually does not interfere on a personal level.

Personally, it is a great practice…not just a good one.

        • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

Yeah, Eric Schmidt had a lot of good things to say about Steve Jobs, and they actually had a lot of respect for each other. I could be very wrong, but I honestly think that if Eric Schmidt had just died, Apple would have postponed the iPhone4S announcement, especially if it was the day of the funeral.

Tell you the truth , I do not see Apple canceling anything for no one short of JC .

    FLAME ON !

      get a life, idiot

  • MaxSteel

That’s BS. Who cares if he died? They’re acting like it’s the end of the world…

    • BiGMERF

I woudnt go that far….. He was Iconic

  • osatrevor

It’s very simple. Google/Samsung was already pushing the announcement out earlier than they wanted to take some steam out of the iPhone 4s announcement. Steve Jobs death is the perfect “excusable” reason to push back the announcement. Especially with how lame the announcement actually ended up being.

Even if the funeral is 10/11, which would be late by funeral standards, CTIA is still happening and they could move it forward or backward one day to accommodate if they really had their hearts set on pushing out the nexus/ICS announcement.

So I sit hear with my old OG Droid, which I keep waiting to upgrade… wondering if I will ever actually have a new phone. I at least wanted a ray of hope next Tuesday.

    Told you so:

Samsung, Google Cancel Launch Event Out of Respect for Steve Jobs

  • thechooz

Good lord, of course this has everything to do with the passing of Jobs.
What do you want, for the launch of this phone to be on the same day as his funeral? Look at what the media is doing, the first day 90% of all the stories were Jobs related, the next day, I would say 50% of all the news were Jobs related. Twitter was on fire with all the tweets. And you want to do a launch the same day?

Might as well launch it at a Starbucks, as no one was going to pay attention to it.

By delaying they look classy, and they don’t get overshadowed by the event.

Get real people, there is no way this could be hardware related, and if it is, expect delays like the Bionic, which would mean that the release would be by the time we start looking for Easter eggs.

  • Chris125

This is most likely just a cover because ics is still buggy and not ready for prime time quite yet. I mean they did rush it trying to combat the new iphone and when they saw how it wasnt groundbreaking by any means they figured might as well iron out everything and no need to rush it.

    • betrayal

      Agree, google is betraying

        Gee, you’re an imbecile.

  • 5n4r35

Steve Jobs was a Buddhist, correct? I don’t know the religion too in-depth myself but a quick google search shows that for death body is usually cremated after 7 Days. Jobs died on the 5th the 7th day would be the 11th. So things line up. Again I don’t know if this is true but perhaps someone of the buddhist faith can clarify?

  • sap26

This is a respectful move on their part. It doesn’t seem like a business decision. They would not have gained nor lost sales from this. We are all just as excited and anxious to see the future of Android but we can wait due to this untimely event.

  • garfield

This is Verizon timed exclusive I suppose with ICS?

Currently I’m on ATT now and might considering switching to Verizon if it weren’t for the reports of buggy LTE phones (random reboots, all apps accidentally erased during system updates, etc). ATT is getting its first LTE phone possibly in 5 weeks with something called the Samsung Skyrocket (aka Celox). Its not as fast as the Galaxy S II however which makes it more of a Galaxy S 1.9 phone. No keyboard and at least 1 GB RAM.

The fact AT&T never updates its Android devices to the new version of the OS has me kind of cringing at even getting this device. The only other alternative is Sprint who actually update Android OS more frequently than Verizon or AT&T. Given the transition to LTE and preference to switch over to Apple Iphones, fake 4G devices soon will lose support. A lose-lose situation unless one waits another year it seems.

  • Richard Yarrell

Google has nothing to worry about now. It shows class to wait there is no way issues exist with ice cream sandwich or the galaxy nexus. When the time is right it will be right definitely nothing from apple will compare to this device or current dualcore devices out today. Google needs to have class during this time period.

  • DownSouthLivin

If this is indeed out of respect for Steve Job’s passing then I respect that. I am however a little upset that the unveiling will not be in my 30 day window anymore to return my Samsung Epic Touch 4G if this next version of Nexus was to completely blow me away. I suppose I will hold on to my current phone and probably just weep in the corner when I finally hear how great this next phone is going to be.

  • You_retards_

Nexus Prime isnt ready and google is LYING right into android faces….Ice cream sandwich is still buggy and crashing like no tomorrow…

  • Abc

hahahahahaha same pattern like after iPad2 launch.

Sammy and Googy are the big rush to over-frog Appy

  • kwills88

The proof that they are truly delaying this because of Steve Jobs was all in that teaser video, remember, right after the fail that was the iPhone event, Sammy released the teaser video, then they edited the ended making sure they are in fact doing CTIA on the 11th, then the next day jobs passed and I am pretty sure Google and Sammy were saying, “Fu*ck…why couldn’t you stay alive to see this Steve, it doesn’t even feel right doing this event so soon knowing that you won’t even be here anymore”.

  • AndroidSensei

So many people will be attending and watching this funeral that you also have to wonder who is going to be at CTIA. Apple is known for taking things personal. How many companies will be slighted for not acknowledging the passing of a true innovator, from Apple? Google made a smart move. Show some respect.

Look, he was a business man. It’s easy for a business man to stand there and shout “I want it smaller. I want it thinner. I want it to sing and dance. “. It’s the guys in back room that were clever enough to design and make the thing work. Jobs gets all the glory, those clever people that made it work get no recognition what so ever.

You have not a clue of how things went down when designing and the ideas put into this. To say all he did was say the lament terms is ignorant of you. He obviously had to have some type of understandingto make all this happen. Not just say “make it smaller.”

woke up today to see a report that a nexus version supporting tmo bands has pssed through FCC! YES !

I’m really curious as to how soon the revealing will be now. This is a bummer but still really nice of Google and Sammy. Classes were canceled for me this coming Monday and Tuesday I don’t have classes anyway, so I had that day all to myself and ready to see IC. It’s okay though. I’ll feel better when a new date is said. I hope Monday they will gives us a new date and then I hope the original release day to public and whatever else is still a go. It just feels so weird how it all happened. I feel kind of bad now that I seen my comment as number one on the video post with 22+.

“I’m sure Google and Sammy wanted to wait until the 11th for you to get any glimpse, and when they seen what Apple did, they all looked around in a moment of silence. Burst out laughing and said lets put the nail in the coffin.”

That comment was before the passing of Jobs. Ironic?

Just wanted to reply to those that say this decision is not going to change anything. Moving this date probably lost Google and Samsung many many sales(thousands or hundreds of thousands). I know of at least 8 (including me) people at my job alone that were holding off on buying the iPhone 4s until after Oct 12 when we got to see what the Prime and ice cream sandy were going to offer.

As soon as they said we have to wait, we all just went and preordered the iPhone 4S.

We are all iphone 3GS users and we were expecting to get a new iphone in June but we had to wait till Oct. We are sick of waiting! So even though none of us talked to eachother before we pulled the trigger, we all ended up getting the 4S. I bet Samsung just lost hundreds of thousands of sales for people that were in the same situation.

    • Nate B.

All this means is you all the same and impatient. Hope you all enjoy what you get. Plus if it wasn’t delayed the 4S would of still came out before the Prime. So I’m sure you all would of went the Apple route anyways. Lets we if you decide to bring it back when you see what the Prime does. People get a little out of control like its personal. Its kind of sad. I understand but I don’t understand.

I’m all for paying respects to Mr. Jobs – he was a pioneer and will probably be the most important tech figure of our lifetimes, however, you don’t see Apple delaying the 4s launch out of respect. I think a week is enough time that this event would have had exactly NO correlation to anything Jobs related. I doubt that when the new iPhone launches next week people will be re-incite the mourning for Jobs’ death.

It is what it is now, and hopefully they’re right – hopefully this won’t actually delay the original release date for the nexus – just when we learn about it. Look at it this way – once we OFFICIALLY know, it’ll be less time before we have to wait to have the device in hand!

ps – I really hope this new news about the gsm radio is true and that the US will see this version.

I can’t see this delay being relevant to anything other than Google/Samsung were not ready.
It’s sad that Steve passed but even Apple continued sales after his passing. They could have cancelled the Friday pre-order date.

  • gstanz67

If you want to respect the name of Steve Jobs then not only do you go ahead with the release, but you make it the biggest event ever by giving everybody in america a free phone. I think Steve Would LOVE that. I just think its not ready and they are using his death as an excuse for more time….That is the utmost DISRESPECT to the man that feeds your children and gases up your Escalade’s

    • Broblov

Seriously? Its mostly the slaves tolling away in the factories in china that gets “feed”.

Say what you want about Steve Jobs but he was no saint in any way, shape or form.

  • neoLwin

Most probably, they are re-writing the keynote script which included a lot of mockery on Jobs …

Call me a cynic but why can almost every handset manufacturer release this OS without fuss. The truth is Samsung has either ****ed up the Touchwiz implementation or they are delaying it for marketting reasons.

Why delay the Nexus S build which is free from propriety add-ons. Samsung, not everyone are idiots and have no knowledge develoments. We are not your typically and I emphasise your typical numpty Apple user who wouldn’t know a Widget from a Guiness can

Stop feeding us this idiosyncratic nonsense. Steve Jobs died,,,boohoo,,,move on.

Basically get your act together or you will be getting less customers due to unreliability and hype-mongeriing media machines misleading people into purchasing hardware that is not fit for purpose. That it in itself is against the trade descriptions act.
