Google+ app updated for Ice Cream Sandwich; Android 4.0 on the horizon

If you’re an avid user of Google+ and have yet to receive an update notification for the app on your Android device, you may want to check the Market now. A total redesign of the Google+ app for Android has just been released in the last day that features a new UI, bug fixes, battery life improvements and more.

According to the “What’s New” section in the Android Market listing, the latest version of Google+ for Android is a “completely new app” and features a “new visual design.” The new visual design they’re talking about is directly related to Ice Cream Sandwich. The app is still colored the same (lots of gray, red, green and blue), but features back buttons on every page, as well as a new posting UI and a slick new messaging app. Also found throughout the app, especially the messenger, are some of the same graphics shown off in the Ice Cream Sandwich demos from the live announcement.

The two most important things to take away from the update are how committed Google is to design and how close Android 4.0 and the Galaxy Nexus are to launching.

The new Google+ app looks great. The new icons and graphics have a much more refined look to them. Google clearly spent quite a bit of time on the app. And the fact that Google is ready to show off this new design is a good sign that Ice Cream Sandwich is coming sooner than later. Just yesterday, Telegraph reported that here in the US, we may have to wait until after November 17 to see the Galaxy Nexus finally launch. ICS should hit the AOSP and Nexus S devices shortly after that. But there’s still good reason to believe the Galaxy Nexus could launch before then. As soon as November 10 to be exact.

Either way, the new Google+ app is the closest thing most people will get to the ICS user interface for at least another week and a half. If you’re looking to download Google+ for Android, use the Market widget below.

I was playing around with the update last night for a while.

I like where Google is going with Android including the look and feel of the apps!

    +1! :)

I can’t wait to +1 ALL THE THINGS.

I can’t wait until the hipsters start saying “dude, that’s plus 1!”

This update is horrible. Removes the widget. (confirmed) Disables instant upload. (per multiple market comments) and says the app is not installed when you try to launch it on the Bionic using the “open” button in the market app after installing.

Obviously they are not going to get rid of the widget forever.they developed a new app from scratch, and the widget is not there yet. They just wanted to make sure the plus app is available as an ics app when ics becomes available, which is clearly “soon”. The app is much better than the previous version.

Instant upload works just fine for me. As for the other issues – The widget is indeed gone, but I hear that Google has acknowledged that and said it will be back soon. As for why it doesn’t launch from the Market – who knows (it doesn’t on my G2x either) but is that really that big of a deal? Do you normally start your apps from the Market app?

It ask you when you first open the app after the upgrade if you want to disable instant upload or leave it on..check your settings you probably disabled it yourself. As for the widget, it is gone. I used the widget a lot but if Tweetdeck or some similar app can get the API and I can access G+ with the rest of my social media sites in one place, I won’t care for a widget.

The widget was gone before this update. Instant Upload works perfect for me. I do can’t open it from the Market itself, but I don’t the major issue in that, just a mistake that can get fixed in no time I’m sure. As for the widget I say give it time, I loved to use it, I’m sure they will come up with something cool. For the rest of the time I have not issues going to the app to make a post, and ever photo I take with the Camera app just gets Instant Uploaded (Only WiFi, that’s how I like it).

It DOES get rid of the widget (which I’m sure will be fixed in an update), but the design tweaks look great! My big complaint: app size! Over 20 MB on my Optimus.

    • Ben Williams

oooOOOooo, you’re right! the market says it’s 7.66MB but once installed with the “total” data it’s just over 20MB!

The size is the biggest problem for me, more like the only problem. I guess it wont be a major issue on newer phones, specially since you can move the app to the SD, but still.

    • thel0nerang3r

      Weird, my app shows:
      total: 7.45MB
      Application: 4.80MB
      data: 2.45 MB
      cache: 0.00B

You probably got a lot of friends on it… I feel lonely now, :-(

looks good too me!! works great on honeycomb also

  • Lane Montgomery

It shows a preview of Huddles on the Market, on an ICS device of course, but it isn’t available for earlier devices. WTH? I thought Gingerbread was the first with an official API for the front-facing camera, so why isn’t it capable of doing huddles?

Maybe they could do a hack that only shows the video of the primary speaker and icons for the rest and just switches on the fly. That way it would be less resource intensive if that is the problem.

Can anybody confirm if huddles are available on Honeycomb? If not, it looks like most of us will have to wait until January to use what I consider to be the best feature of Google+.

I dont have the widget on my Nexus One 2.3.4

Am I the only one who lost the widget before this update. I had it on when I was using Eclair, when I moved up to Froyo I noticed it gone, all this before this update.

    Google+ is dead

I beg to differ, but think what you want. i have tons of fun using it.

  • Nate B.

Few apps of Google are saying not compatible with my device. But I have the previous version installed. (Nexus S4G & Epic Touch 4G)

I personally found the update to be awesome, nonetheless some minor issues that have been already noted. You now what does suck? I can’t update to the latest version of Google Maps since is not available in my country, c’mon Google! It sucks stuff like Market Enabler won’t work on the latest Market, or at least it doesn’t seem to.

  • ndokami

    I like the new update
and the new look of it..
i got it yesterday on my Sensation
@Wyatt Earp google buzz is dead
Google+ is live and still kicking… though it a pain trying to get my friends and Family to switch over from facebook….

  • andy e

I was going to get the update, but a lot of the latest comments on the Market are negative. Is it mainly just an aesthetic update or did they add valuable features too?

  • Richard Yarrell

Google plus is definately a neat experience much different than facebook. Google plus on the Galaxy Nexus must be a great experience…

    • alk

Oh gosh, how come you didn’t mention EVO 3D?
      People, change happens..
