Droid Charge is getting a visit from the Gingerbread man

Hey Droid Chargers/Chargites/Chargians! Verizon has that Gingerbread update you’ve been waiting for and they’ve slapped the “coming soon” sticker on it. Sorry, nothing more specific than that and no sign of ICS, but then again no one else has a phone with ICS on Verizon either. (*glares at Verizon*)

Anyway, Gingerbread is not too shabby and brings with it a whole host of changes. Beyond the security and performance enhancements some of the highlights are the revised interface and color scheme along with improved copy and paste functionality. You’ll also gain the new download manager app and the “Running” tab found in Manage Applications that will show you what’s hogging up memory on your device.

If you want to read about all of the new features you can hit the Source link below for Verizon’s handy “Benefits of Software Upgrade” breakdown.

One caveat is that Verizon doesn’t specify the exact version of Android 2.3, so whether for example Google Talk with video is going to be supported is unknown at this point. I’ll update this post with that information as soon as I get the OTA.

Let us know how the update goes for you once it arrives and here’s hoping this is just a stepping stone to Ice Cream Sandwich.

    About time

    • triangle

Yeah, more like about F***in’ time. This update is sorely needed and long overdue for the charge.

Wow if I would have known there would be this long of a delay for this phone I never would have bought it. I mean when it launched Froyo we were disappointed, but then 8 months later we are still stuck with it.

I can’t wait to upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus and be free of the shitty upgrade process.

  • Dirge

It’s most likely 2.3.6, which is what the latest leak is.

    • shrike1978

The Samsung source release was build EP4D, Android 2.3.5. The current assumption is that is the OTA build.

      • Dirge

Actually, from what I read, the current assumption is that the OTA will be EP4P(which is the latest leak)

I hope it doesn’t take that long to get an ICS updates.

  • Bolted

Or you could root your phone and get it now.

      I’m tempted.

  • inviolable

Really? So the Charge has had froyo all this time? I figured it launched with gingerbread.

    • Lee Swanson

I think that was everyone assumption

  • JBC

Precisely why I dropped my SGS 1 and went to HTC. After dealing with that debacle Samsung cant be trusted.

  • bwmanx

Finally! I’ve been hoping for this since I bought it months ago.

“OTA (Over The Air) Push / Pull Details DROID Charge (i510) — MR3 Version EP4 will be pushed Tues 11/29 at noon to 1K customers followed by 19K at 9:00PM Eastern. There will be the ‘soak’ period to evaluate the push. Upon success, beginning Thurs 12/1 at 11:59PM we will ramp up the daily push quantity to 100K, followed by the remaining base on Fri 12/2. Users will not be able to pull the software. Download times 2—5 minutes — depending on network conditions.”

I haven’t gotten mine yet…but hopefully by the end of the week.

Still haven’t gotten my update. It appears from the Verizon support forum that some people have.

  • bwmanx

Just got my update this morning! Finally.

  • bwmanx

Battery life seems much better. Camera seems a little faster and can now use front facing in some apps.

  • Lee Swanson

The update is OK. I’m very tempted to root soon. Any suggestions for which mod to go with?
