Google+, Google Maps, Google Goggles all updated

It’s apparently “update all the applications” day over at Google today. Google+, Google Maps and Google Goggles have all received an update of some form or another.

The Google+ application has been updated today, bringing several new feature enhancements and the standard stability improvements and bugfixes. The full changelist is as follows:

  1. Search
  2. +1 photos
  3. +1 comments
  4. High resolution photo upload support
  5. See if someone’s online and currently typing in Messenger conversations
  6. Start Messenger conversations by just entering a phone number
  7. Links to posts or profiles can now open inside the app
  8. Instant Upload supports videos again
  9. Several stability improvements and bug fixes

Arguably the biggest improvements are the added ability to “+1” photos and individual comments, two features previously only available in the browser version of the Google+ application. It was beyond frustrating wanting to “+1” a picture or someone’s comment and having to launch a browser when I was around a computer to do so.

Messenger also received a few cool new options, making it more like Google Talk. Within the Messenger section of Google+, you can now see if people are online and whether they are currently typing in your conversation. You can also start a new Messenger conversation by simply adding the recipient’s phone number.

If you haven’t already (or set your market to auto-update), you should probably head over to the market and update your Google+ application.

Google Goggles

Google Goggles also received a fairly significant update to add some pretty cool new features. The changes:

  1. Continuous Mode allows you to use Goggles without pressing the shutter button.
  2. Goggles can recognize text in a document and return a link to its online version. Try it on your favorite newspaper!
  3. You can help Goggles recognize more objects. Tap on ‘Do you have a better suggestion’ in the Goggles results page.
  4. Google Goggles will now show user submitted results in the search results page.

The coolest one of these additions in my opinion is the ability to scan a newspaper article to receive a link to the online version of that story. The other features are pretty cool, too.

Google Maps

Google Maps received a very minor update, bringing bugfixes and performance enhancements to several devices.

Final Thoughts

There you have it; Google has provided updates to three of its applications, two of which have pretty significant improvements and enhancements. Head over to the market and give these apps an update.

I had to go into the apps themselves to update.. Did not receive a push to my Gnex. O well, nice updates.. Thanks Google

    • J-Man

No faults with getting my updates pushed to my G Nexus. Might’ve just pulled the trigger a tad quick there.

    • Bryan Stoner

I can’t take it anymore! There has to be a serial down-voter.

BigMerf how are the new features? XD

      • erikiksaz

The person doing the down voting is probably mad at the following comments that sound like this, “aww man, it’s so horrible that I’m not getting the newest updates on my brand-new, unavailable-to-most, GALAXY NEXUS.”

        Boo hoo, complain elsewhere =p

        • Alex

Update all the applications day is my favourite!

    • Danerisms

They were not pushed to my G2X either. Had to go look for them!

    • antfelici

      Really nice updates

  • Kevin Amundson

    More gifts from Google!

    • stenzor

Google has really been on the ball lately

      • erikiksaz

I wish they would add some options for refresh frequency for Latitude though.

It can be such a battery hog when reception is low.

  • zyphbear

I’m so glad they updated Goggles to not have to keep taking snapshots and to also find the same text online, that will REALLY help!

I’m still waiting for the feature to be able to access the results you have from Goggles on a PC.

    • Sean the Electrofreak

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person that uses Goggles…

    • desean

If you enable search history, wouldn’t you be able to obtain the results (from Goggles) from your PC (or anyway else)?

      • zyphbear

@Desean I have enabled search history for every update and it doesn’t show in my web search history or anywhere else.

Also looks like the ‘getting results without shutter (without taking a picture) is not working as of yet, it still just is the old version even after running the update, maybe the new one requires ICS?

  • pcon

I was really hoping that this update to Google+ would make it more tablet friendly. I have to applaud Google on their other apps on the tablet, but Google+ does not do well on a tablet.

  • james bricknell

all your update, belong to us

  • halo0

I find the g+ widget to be quite useful on my gtab 10.1…

  • Bryan Stoner

Google Goggles has to be one of the coolest apps. And if people can now help make better suggestions I’m sure we will see a huge accuracy increase during look-ups. Now if only they updated Google Talk with a voip feature… That would really be the icing on the cake.

    • rutgers2k

integrate Google talk and voice then by tango and viber

  • J-Man

The Goggles update is actually really neat! Document recognition works pretty well.

  • seven2k

Got it! Cant wait to see some of the improvements!

  • POrg

This may be the first ‘minor’ Google Maps update in a while. Seriously, nearly every time that team updates the app it’s like Christmas.

  • boro09

    +1 to that!

  • Benjamin M. Strozykowski

So glad that we finally get to +1 comments and photos. That was getting kind of annoying, the disconnect between the site’s functionality and the app’s.

When are we going to see better URL sharing in the Google+ Android app? I hate the way it just copies the URL into the body of the post, rather than actually picking it up like it does from a desktop browser. Sure, I can go back on a desktop browser and edit the post to have the link added, but that’s an extra step that can be avoided with an update.

  • mikeyDroid

Gotta love them staying on top of these apps so they don’t get stale!

    • Anthony Pineda

  • mikesuds

The Google+ app is really shaping up to be great but I still need to coerce more people that I know to use it for it to really gain any purposeful function in my life.

    • Jes

Whoa sweet I think my +1 just bumped up your rank right before my eyes. That was cool hehe.

  • ramenchef

The googles update was really nice I must say.

  • calihawki

G+ is getting my attention more than Facebook these days. It won’t be long before I stop looking at Facebook. I am really excited to try out the new Goggles app.

  • HoLfElDeR

    Google FTW

  • latouffe

Thx for the News! I dont know why but im not getting any push update. I have to enter market and my apps to see the updates pending :S.

  • Hall Lo

Love the new Google+ app :) much smoother and quite a few of improvements on my fone

  • Shadowlore

More G+ love is awesome :) Only wish more of my (braindead) friends would start using it over facebook.

Sidenote.. the new Google+ icon sucks. Looks like something I’d expect to see on an iOS device.

    • Danerisms

Yeah many of my friends have looked at and just aren’t posting. I actually have started posting links in my facebook feed to Google+ for a status update! HA

  • Deeds

Three great updates from Google, all on the same day? My good day just got better

  • Danerisms

I am pretty excited for a better suggestion on Goggles. This should start making it way more usable!

  • ndub21

This on the same day I get my Logitech Revue and Xbox 360 updates??? Update overload!

  • Jes

So THAT’S why my videos weren’t automagically uploading!

  • Lewis McGeary

    Some great updates.
A few concerns about the Goggles updates though; Continuous is interesting but I don’t like the constant haptic pulse, also was surprised by the vocal “1 result found” thing which is fine except you can’t seem to disable it and it still plays in Silent Mode.

  • Torrance Barber

    Hurray for updates!

  • Jeremy Johns

Facebook coming out with a big update today for Android and will feature some major changes in the right direction. Step your game up G+

  • Richard Yarrell

Great updates for all these applications. Google always rules. Now let’s get this GNex business straight or make Verizon handle there business…

  • Diaeko

    lets see

  • Jöran Schlömer

I am really digging the Google+ Update!

  • MarkT

G+ update ticks some important boxes.

  • breinhar

The news paper thing is cool. Except if I have the news paper I’d rather read it infront of me in paper form.

    • Lewis McGeary

True, but it would be useful if you either want to comment on the article or share the link. Pretty cool!

  • staryoshi

Forget Santa, Google is the one bringing presents this holiday season :) Keep up the good work!

  • ArticulateFool

I get excited for Google app updates! Always open them right away to see what new surprises are in store.

    • Lewis McGeary

Me too, purposely don’t enable auto-update so I can read the Change Log when there’s something new. Geektastic!

  • jenskristian

I really like the new G+ update!

  • Anthropic

Google+ #4 I don’t see anything to allow high res uploads, curious if they do it by default and what the definition of high res is.

    • Lewis McGeary

Well in the release notes it says “Full resolution photo upload” so presumably high res means whatever resolution the photo is taken at. Initially I think it was a 5 megapixel limit and there was never a setting for that so presumably it is now just uploaded as-is by default.

    • desean

I am also interested to know what higher res is supported. My guess could be to 2048 pixels since this is the highest that Google+ is supporting.

  • Ismael Rodriguez

Sweet. I hope this means we can see better resolution in photos coming from the stream, too. There’s been quite a big difference between photos appearing in the app compared to online.

  • Jamie

Awesome. I’m always the most excited with the core G Apps get an update.
Just need to be able to begin a hangout from mobile (though I think this is possible in ICS???)

  • donger

keep up with the good work, Google.

  • ToonPanda

    Thank you papa google :’)

  • goncalossilva

I can’t seem to notice any difference on the Maps app, but the updates on G+ are cool. Haven’t tried Goggles yet.

The best thing about Google updating its apps is that they’ll do it again – soon! These guys are tireless :D

  • sylar

Yay I love it when Google updates its products except that I have to learn how to use the stuff all over again.

  • aranea

    Yey! New updates!

  • humidity

    Go Google! You guys rock!

  • Michael Ian

Just waiting till google plus catches on. It will right? right?

    • phaet2112

google plus is catching on- people are on facebook not because of a desire but rather because “everyone else is on and is bugging me to get on”. There isn’t any sort of brand loyalty besides inertia.

      • Lewis McGeary

Yeah, a lot of posts on facebook these days are actually complaining about facebook. The problem with social networks is that everyone needs to move around the same time, one at a time doesn’t work if they’ve got no-one to talk to when they get there. (That is unless those who sign up to Google+ just now realise the gold is in connecting with new people rather than your existing friends)

  • Danthes24

this is why i love Google..:D

  • Ilyse Rose

    Really digging the updates provided.

  • tjwwm0m

Glad for the updates. I just hope they don’t start updating just to update, which seems to be the norm these days.

  • antfelici

    I love all the updates

  • eioous

Its about time they bring back video uploads. I’ve been using a version that is two updates old just for the upload video feature.

  • KatSelezneva

Thanx Google! I like Google Goggles very much. This wonderful service helped me to have a lot of fun and to get some ideas for new mobile applications Google Goggles can be integrated with. A step to augmented reality with Google Goggles

  • Kenneth Ohonba

Is Google Goggles better than bar code scanner? Can anyone help me decide?

  • Sean BillyMaysHere

i like barcode…. works better for… well barcodes

  • Darknight42020

This seems to be Google’s quarter (Q4) to shine! I’m glad to see the effort this company is putting forth to improve things. Of course the new OS may have something to do with it, but happy none the less.

  • lekky

If you have a Galaxy Nexus or a galaxy note, the biggest update by furbished his res image uploads…!

  • Diaeko

    new google+ looks amazing!!!!!!

  • vid500

Cool, have them on autoupdate. But it realy is an improvement.

  • thechad

Instant Upload for videos is so awesome! I am so glad it’s back!

    • thechad

and just in time for Christmas videos. So while people are acting stupid at their Christmas parties you can video it and when i wake up after your hangover the videos will be instantly ready to share with the world.

  • http://None Javier Bastardo

Really nice updates, happily enjoying the G+ one.

  • gherea

Video uploading in google + is working again. Back to 5 starts on market.
