Grand Theft Auto III hits Android on December 15 for $4.99

Today Rockstar Games announced that their highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition will be available on select Android devices starting Decmeber 15th for $4.99. The game pays tribute to the original PlayStation 2 version that launched 10 years ago, but it will feature boosted the graphics with newly created textures, more complex characters with higher polygon count, and higher resolution assets from the game’s PC release.

Don’t expect to enjoy the game, unless you have a newer dual-core device. The list of supported devices is mainly limited to those with Tegra 2 processors, but we expect more will be added at a later date.

Look for Grand Theft Auto III on the following devices:

  • Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x
  • Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

Previous reports said that Rockstar Games was using a Tegra 3 tablet as their development platform, so we expect this game to be available on the upcoming Asus Transformer Prime. The game will feature on-screen controls, but we also hear that official gamepad support will be included so you play with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 controller.

Check out the quick trailer below for an idea of what to expect.

Great! I’m a big fan of the GTA saga. Wondering about the controls… Really hope they don’t disappoint!

    • Futureboy

Agreed. I like all my violent crime sprees to be as smooth as possible.

      • mr 1338

        well ps3 / xbox contolls + hdmi = profit
my SGS2 is starting to replace my playstation

        • tmihai20

Too bad it needs dual core CPU phones… I guess we can’t all have. Better like this than with a substandard experience.

      • JayB95

    • AndroidJunkie

i wonder how big the game will be. better support move to SD!

      • mmmark111

A compressed copy of GTA3 for the PC is only 200 MB. Extracted I think it was about 500 MB. If I had to guess it would be somewhere in the middle.

    • mmmark111

The controls will definitely make or break this game. I’m optimistic though!

    • B2L

I hope they are good controls, I can’t wait to reminisce the old times. :)

  • Nate B.

I can’t wait to get GTA 5 for the PS3 next year :)

    • goncalossilva

Me too. What a great game!

Sweet, should be the ISH on the Transformer prime !

    • Alex

All the more incentive to win a Tegra tablet!!!!!!!

  • stenzor

Yes! Now I can run over pedestrians and beat hookers on the go

    • inviolable

Why do you need a game to do that? Wait..nevermind I asked that. Nice day we’re having huh?

  • Shay D. Life

Well, at least I can play it on one of my devices. I wish they would show some actually gameplay.

    • Taylor Wimberly

Yeah they said a new trailer is coming out next week if you want to see more gameplay.

  • ArticulateFool

This will look beautiful on my galaxy nexus!

    • Vipitus

      Yes, agree with you :)

  • ZEROleaf

Yeah this is going to be great! I remember being 12 years old when this game came out lol, It was epic when it did. Now it just needs Galaxy nexus support!

    • ArticulateFool

It wont take ling at all to figure out how to force the game to run on the nexus.

      • megatron214

Very true. I have gotten games to run on the Nexus One that they cnt run on the N1

    • J-Man

      Definitely needs some GNexus love.

  • nmoline

Any chance this will run on the HP Touchpad running CM7? That’s my only Android Tablet.

    • mmmark111

Just use Chainfire 3D with the Tegra drivers when the game comes out.

  • Elliot Powell

When I first heard about this I dusted off my old PS2 to play GTA San Andreas again…

  • james bricknell

    no Galaxy nexus :( sad.

Asus eee pad transformer though YAY i have one!

  • xsynth

Excellent, would love to pick this up. Though I don’t think it would run well on my Nexus S!! C’mon quad core stock ICS phone, I want!

  • Kaote

Awesome, this game is a real stress reliever after a day at work. Nothing like doing thing in a game that would otherwise get you the chair.

  • Arturo Castro

    No evo 3d support :-(

  • jst4tim

I am a longtime fan of the GTA series really looking forward to this.

  • Nickedynick

I love GTA, and I love Android, and I especially love any possible combination of the two. However, compared to the titles that have been coming out recently, this trailer makes the game look ridiculous.

    • stenzor

It’s just a 10 year anniversary video with scenes from the original GTA 3, not the Android version which will have better graphics, don’t worry.

    • inviolable

      Ridiculous in what way?

  • Cesarruiz

    Where’s HTC Evo 3D :(

  • dl22

Project some GTA 3 via Head up display in the truck and make the morning commute AWESOME.

  • spintrex

Oh lordy time to pick up some hoes

  • spintrex

Does this mean …10 year anniversary of Vice City … on android?!

  • seven2k

Dec. 15th for 4.99 might pick that up play it in between SWTOR and tv watching

  • cb2000a

Game designers need to implement keyboard controllers as most Android tablets can use them. The touch screen controls are awful (for the most part).

  • Johnathan Prochaska

    No Samsung Galaxy S2??!
What exactly is the Samsung Galaxy R?

  • Benji Glazier

no amaze 4g on the list, but ill give it time.
played this to completion years ago, sweet sweet nostalgia.

  • Aaron Kemp

I thought because the Xbox controller uses a wireless connection and not bluetooth like PS3 or other bluetooth controllers it cant be connected to a android device. If i am wrong please someone tell me how to do this.

    • Crickerman

Tegra 3 has native gamepad support (wii, ps3, and yes, xbox 360). you’ll need to get a tegra 3 phone/tablet to use your xbox controller

  • moelsen8

no bionic on the list? i’m sick of this app divide that’s happening lately. either make your app available for all newer phones, or none at all. i’m sick of worrying whether i have a tegra or omap or any other criteria. it should be “high-end phone released in the last 6 months to a year” or not.

    • wombas

It is three one downside of an open handset market huh. very frustrating.

  • staryoshi

Grand Theft Auto was the most fun (for me) when it exhibited ridiculousness. I feel like this was lost in GTAIV, which while enjoyable, was not as fun for me as previous installations. I’ll be picking GTA up if I grab a transformer prime this month :)

  • Kenneth Ohonba

What a poor selection of compatible devices. I guess my SGS2 won’t experience it

  • Melih

WTF is that motion blur effect?

    • Schwagg!

The effect you get when you look past a streetlight in a moving car, in GTA case, the stream that trails a car’s headlights and what not

  • Kenneth Ohonba

The Samsung Galaxy R is more or less a downgraded version of the company’s finest smartphone. It passes on the 1.2 GHz Exynos SoC in favor of NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chip, the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display has been replaced with a marginally smaller 4.2-inch Super Clear LCD screen, and the camera on its back has been taken from 8 down to 5 megapixels. Besides, the otherwise plastic back of the Galaxy R has been treated to a nice metallic finish, which we actually find to be an improvement over the plastic feel of the GALAXY S II.

  • Diaeko

    i love gta
but isnt 9mm better on android?

    • Crickerman

9mm is more like a max payne clone… it doesn’t have the free roaming sandbox gameplay that gta has

      • Diaeko

        it dosnt??!?!
        wooohooouuu shit on it

  • Shadowlore

I’m curious about the controls on this… the PS2 version had so many button combos, I can’t realistically see how they’re going to pull it off on Android/iOS.

The upside, however.. is that if they DO pull it off, the engine should also be able to handle Vice City and San Andreas as well :)

  • Vitti

Love GTA, but I worry the controls will not be great on a touch screen. Also, why no GS2? Seems like the hardware is plenty good for it.

  • Don Gray

This will be great on my Transformer Prime!

  • J-Man

Who didn’t love looking at the action from God’s view-point?

  • Nathan D.

My friend will freak out if they saw me playing this on a phone or tablet :-) n most likely want to play to.

    • kevin charliethesuperturtle

I hope it has 2 plyer mode or even story mode :D

  • alexandro meza

All i need is to replace my ever so loyal Nexus S with some Dual Core bad boy and I’m off to the streets of Liberty City to indulge in some organized crime and other unethical activities! YAY for GTAIII

  • kevin charliethesuperturtle

If only they’ll release the best game all time,
    San Andreas

Note: so my hp toothpaste won’t be supported? ;(

Hope they come out with a full GTA collection.

  • Anthony Massingham

What an odd collection of devices.

Surprised it’s not on the GSii.

I do think these sorts of games translate quite poorly to touchscreen devices. I’d still be interested in seeing how it plays though – I like to be surprised.

  • Schwagg!

    Hmmm…….Rage Engine…..For Mobile?????? I LOVE IT!!!!! My Girl tab…Dell Streak 7…Check. My Device…….TOSHIBA THRIVE……Check…….PS3 Controller……check USB/BT Controller app…….Check…..OH YEAH LETS PLAY SOME GTA3!!!!!!!!!!!

  • just_a_general_observation_dont_panic_editor

Dang just bought an Atrix 2. Just kidding.

  • desean

I wonder if this will make it to the 10 app for $0.10 list on 15 Dec? Afterall, it will be the last day of the $0.10 promotion. Let’s hope it does :)

  • ramenchef

This is going to be so much fun to play. I definitely need to pick up a sixaxis controller for emulators and games like this.

  • humidity

One of my favorite GTA games! Can’t wait

  • Hall Lo

:O woah looking forward to this! great game!

  • Razor420

I read somewhere before the Evo 3d was going to be compatible, but now they don’t have it listed anymore?

  • traicer

This game would be nice if I had an xperia play

  • Steve Beaulac

One of my favorite GTA games! Can’t wait

  • xfaith

Think I will need to upgrade from my ICS Captivate to be able to run these games, guess we will see……upgrade available in January….hmmmm.

  • Michael Ian

Ok I really need to win one of this Tegra 2 contest so I can play this,

  • Almog Ben David

The thing i don’t understand is why most of the new devices are not on the supported list.
this is little bit strange as i see it

  • Vipitus

    Galaxy S support?

Shame it’s Tegra-only game (but maybe it’ll work on Galaxy SII)

  • Kevin Lembke

Wasnt the Galaxy s2 supposed to be supporting this? Not by that list..

  • donger

    Can’t wait.

  • Fabio Rojas

    NO nexus S support :(

    • Lewis McGeary

Yeah that was my reaction, hopefully that changes!

  • poke50uk

    Come on Vice City <3

  • kzlife

Why limit the games to tegra-devices :( ?
Should support phones like sgs2 too..

  • Merridus

Sweet. Should tide me over until GTA 5.

  • Kam_Pewter

I was all excited about this game until I realized it’s Tegra-only. ::womp womp::

    • Lewis McGeary

Yeah same here, initially saw the news elsewhere where that wasn’t mentioned.

  • Albert Altman

I am a very big fan ! For me this is more exciting than Portal2 !!!

  • Finn Kempers

This will probably the only competitor for the gangsta’ genre in gaming against the upcoming Gangstar 3 by Gameloft, which I think will find it difficult to beat the well renowned GTA series with its well established fan-base. I hope to get this, but also hope they can compress files properly, unlike Gameloft -_- .

    • TruFactz

umm, they’re the kings of it. Remember playing gta vice city stories then playin it on your psp? with the same amount of songs and what not? yeah they got the compression game down packed.

  • that_maynard

I don’t know if I could consistantly play this enough. I spent many hours on my ps2, let alone my phone or a tablet (if I ever get one)

  • frmorrison

That is great that Tegra 3 devices are getting old PC games (which may not be old to some people).

  • theicebergx

    hows the controls ?

  • jakymiwm

This looks awesome! I hope I can win a new tablet so I can play it!

  • LukeT32

    WHAT?! No original droid support!?

  • philippegee

This is going to KILL my productivity.

  • Sean the Electrofreak

Guess I’m out of luck rockin’ my single-core Epic 4G. It’s okay though… I see an upgrade in my future. :)

  • mamarda

and what about HTC Sensation xe, it is not listed in supported phones, will it be supported?

  • paddy36oo

i wonder will the xperia play be able to run it

  • Daniel Lomholt

What? No support for Galaxy Nexus? Comon, Rockstar!

  • luis Hernandez

Can you guys like my comment so I can gain rank? Please :)

  • Jorge Eslava

First thing I’ll do is see if I can play it with my wii remote, and then forget about the rest of the world.

  • Nickedynick

    No HTC Sensation?!

  • Joey

Really? Samsung Galaxy R? I forgot that existed. I guess cuz it’s Tegra 2. It says on the market page that Galaxy Nexus support is coming soon. How do you not target the current Android flagship?

  • mavensage

I might have to get this game for my son. He spends his whole time stealing police cars and then taunting the police. Its hilarious!

  • Jesse Mitchell

yes works good on my Xperia PLAY

  • winston rodriquez

    When on HTC EVO 3D?
