Epson working on mysterious Android device for MWC

Epson has me intrigued. The company best known for printers, projectors, and scanners is working on a mysterious new device that runs the Android OS and is expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in late February.

We have absolutely no idea what Epson has planned, but we were told the device is in a new category and it offer a range of mobile entertainment and viewing options.

I did a quick search of Epson’s site and found this MegaPlex projector that comes with an iPhone dock and integrated speakers, which was the only thing related to mobile entertainment. It doesn’t run a mobile OS, so I don’t think that’s the type of device we are going to see.

What do you think Epson has up their sleeve?  Are they working on their own Android tablet? Maybe a mobile device with integrated projector? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

    • Bryan Stoner

      Smartphone with a printer dock?

      • goncalossilva

Printer dock with a pico projector? Oh, wait… :p

        • mr 1338

nope this looks like a full sized beamer!
take a look at the reflection, where you can see the lense ring.
maybe a multi media station / gaming console that doesnt need a TV but comes with its own beamer

          • Lane Montgomery

My bet is an [email protected] device.

          • faun

You mean like Google TV embedded in a projector?

        • AndyNguyen36

A high possibility! I’m sure you’d be able to print from the smartphone not too far from the future.

      • protozeloz

A projector that can make calls and print

        • Chris Lewis

no its a printer that can make calles and project.

          • thechad

no its a caller that can prinject

          • bruce080

It’s a printer that can project calls

    • Futureboy

Smart phone with a pico projector makes sense. Sony already has a camcorder with built-in projector on the market that they claim will project a 60″ diagonal. I’m sure you need a seriously dark room, but I love the direction the technology is heading!

      • Samar

        Well Said..Futureboy.

  • ramenchef

Portable scanner + projector + speakers + dock? I have no idea, haha.

    • Bryan Stoner

Whoaaa the scanner would be really cool. But CamScanner already works pretty well.

  • TruFactz

(In the voice of Dave from Storage Hunters) YEEEEP!

    • stenzor

Oh how I hate that voice

      • Futureboy

The series is “Storage Wars” on A&E and season one is available for streaming on Netflix. It’s a show about people who buy auctioned storage lockers that have been abandoned or defaulted on payment. Pretty interesting show.

    • Clark Wimberly

Dave is from Storage Wars, YEPPPPPPPPPPP

  • Toonshorty

Perhaps rather than a dock, it’s a projector that stores all your films and so you can access movies and subscription services (Lovefilm, Netflix) all at the press of a button?

    • Taylor Wimberly

Maybe like a projector that runs Google TV? That’s the best idea I’ve heard yet.

      • Andy_jr

That’s the first thing I thought of. That would be pretty cool.

      • Samar

One day, there will only be Androids walkiing on the roads. Then the movies, “The Walking Android”..LOL

    • Clark Wimberly

Oooh a self-contained GTV device would be pretty neat.

    • Steve Heinrich

That would be awesome! Also, using your phone as a remote for it…

  • stenzor

Whatever it is, I hope they don’t make me buy more ridiculously overpriced cartridges

    • Samar

Very true. That’s how HP’s running its printer business to begin with.. :-), i think.

  • Chris Lynch

Remember the Epson P2000? That is what i’m thinking.
Some sort of USB-host capable device for media storage.

  • goncalossilva

From the picture it looks like a gaming device, but I’m betting on a projector-related device as well :)

    • Clark Wimberly

Sorry about that, but the picture is total mockup I just made in Photoshop. It’s not official at all.

      • stenzor

So Clark works for Epson now, eh? :P

      • faun

Oh…. might be worth mentioning that in an image caption or in the article – here we are all squinting at it and jumping to conclusions!

  • Thomas Biard

I would want an Android Printer. You can use the device for a scanner already. A projector sounds fun, but expensive and unobtainable by me…

  • Jimmy13

A printer with a sweet touchscreen that plays angry birds :P

  • YellowDucati

    Android powered dot matrix printer?

  • xsynth

    Projector with built in GoogleTV?

  • Bryan Stoner

Like Google TV but as a projector.

Lord everybody is getting in on Android.. Great for all of its

    • Futureboy

Have you seen the MOD Live heads-up display for ski goggles? (running Android, of course).
      Pretty slick.

      • Steven Nutt

Now that is starting to look like the future, someone shrink that to normal glasses please ;)

      • Jöran Schlömer

Sick Gadget. But I don’t really know if it would distract me or not :D

  • CJ LaFleur

an android powered printer. every electronic device in the world will soon be android powered!

  • HoLfElDeR

Android printer capable to comunicate wit other android devices

  • dnar56

An Android powered FAX machine that sends repeated f*ck off faxes to apple HQ ftw!

  • zyphbear

I’m wondering if it will be a small device for wireless printing from SmartPhones/Tablets. After all, most printer companies don’t get you with the price of the hardware, but the cost of ink. So they figure they are losing out on some of that income.

  • Silver

The first thing that came to mind is a printer that runs AnroidOS so that it could interact with your phone. That means when you just took some awesome pictures with your phone and if you’re within proximity of the printer (or dock it), you can have the printer print out those pictures. However I don’t think you need the printer to run Android to be able to do that…

  • lxgeorge

    Surprise me Epson. Surprise me…

  • Billy

They can call it the “Epson Mysterious” … may not be long enough though …

  • Hannu Leinonen

At least I hope it’s not a printer. I don’t wanna hate Android, ya’ know:

  • Ben Gildenstein

If that picture is accurate, the reflection is clearly that of a projector…

What type of a projector remains to be seen.

  • Billy

Something to compete with AirPrint — Android Print ….

*Waves Phone* … These are not the TPS Reports you’re looking for …

  • thekaz

I’m guess they are jumping into the android tablet market. Why not? everyone else is…

  • cabrone

If it is anything like my printer, I’ll pass. :-P

  • Louis A

Hahaha every body wants a share of the android pie. I guess telegraphs are coming back to style lol

  • euio

It will probably be a Segway type human transporter with rocket engines. Oh, and with an android mp3 player attached to the handlebars.

  • darkhorse166

It’ll be something lame, like a printer.

  • Asdf1616

a cloud connected printer/prjector, specially made to work with android

  • Chuxter

It’s gonna be an Android phone with a BUILT-IN laser printer!!!

Epson phone user: “Excuse me, I need to replace the toner cartridges in my cell phone. I’m also low on paper.”

  • Danny Calderon

Smartphone and software that’ll let you print docs and pics on your epson printer, or they might have an app called angry printers,

    • Jöran Schlömer

lol @ the angry printers :D

  • DroidSamurai

I bet 1 cent that they are going to reveal a printer that will print out your next smartphone :-)

  • hurric

projector that shoots / beams stuff from your smart phone to screen magically.

  • Leo Young

Epson makes a lot of money putting marks on paper. I wonder if it is simply an android OS printer? And perhaps an app that will let you print from any where on your current device.

Seems plain but it is an easy way to add IQ to a printer and remember, HP said they wanted to put Web OS on printers.

  • honourbound68

Cloud printer for android? Bluetooth portable printer?

  • Aladdin

    Introducing: the new Epson PrinterPhone

  • eioous

Where is all the T-mobile Android love?

  • Emmanuel Rodriguez

    Google TV Projector? haha

  • xfaith

Ill go with Aladdin’s for the PrintPhone… Its a foldable smartphone that expands to print. Named like the PadPhone that we have yet to see.

  • breinhar

A tablet / polaroid camera. Gotta shake the tablet before printing.

  • aranea

A projector/tablet that not only has a media player but comes with integrated microsoft office support.

  • Hall Lo

A phone with a projector? A portable projector with android on it to have google cloud print? :D?

  • azswift

They’ve got printers that should work with Android and other mobile devices, maybe showing off the printer app?

  • janjaweed

    Its a multyfunction .scaner+fax+printer+phone+wifi.acces

  • AceoStar

They’re going to team up with Coinstar/redbox and launch printing Kiosk’s all over the world printable from any mobile device.

  • humidity

I bet it’ll be a projector with speakers and Android built in! That’d be sweet!

  • jamal

I like surprises. Hopefully it’s something nice and worth buying.

  • Nathan D.

wow, this will be interesting to see what they come up with.

  • blaseb

The first cell phone with a printer!! Mini-Printer * :P

  • cxandroid

Most likely a scanner/printer specifically designed to integrate with android devices.

  • Anthropic

I’m sure it will be a phone you need to buy cartridges for that only last a short time and cost almost as much as a new device to replace, and even if they aren’t all used you still have to update them or the phone wont turn on at all.

    That’s my expectation. Bastards.

    • Samar

If that’s what it is then it sucks dude.

  • zippyioa

Another way to get us to big more Epson printer cartridges ;)

  • Samar

Am guessing “Something that syncs up with all ur android devices and uses alternate power / does away with cartridges”. But, they definately have to price it cleverly.

  • Ivan Todorov

A printer with Android :) it’s so not awesome :)

  • Lewis McGeary

I’m sure it will turn out to be something boring, but I’ll make a suggestion for something a bit wilder.
A projector with Android built in, with a focus on gaming. Will include a controller and will be an all in one unit easily portable for projecting games, movies and playing music.
    Yeah, probably not.

  • Robert Whittaker

I can see the new advert…

You to can play angry birds whilst waiting for the printing to come out.

  • Robert Whittaker

Actually it wouldn’t surprise me if they used it for some enterprise Multifunction device. The o/s and screens on the ones in my office are pretty poor.

  • eliander mendoza

I think this will surely be in a smartphone some day, a “pico projector!” i mean. I think i read something somewhere about microsoft putting a patten something similar to this type of technology or something very similar about your hands interacting with “pico projector!” reflection or something. :D looking forwards

  • seansin

maybe a pico projector with something like Samsung Smart TV kind of features?

  • lokidokie

Well it certainly sounds like it’s going to be Pico Projector related. Integrated into a phone? That’d be cool

  • Jeremiah Akin

If Epson makes it then it will be cheap at first but then you will have to buy some kind of refill pack that will be an arm and a leg.

  • Michael C.

It would kinda be cute if they had whatever the device is come in 4 colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. :p

  • PiTTDRoiD

    Please…..another print NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  • DroidPower

Like many have said, maybe an android phone + super printing on EPSON printers and a projector.

Or, perhaps a great mobile printing app? And then a line of EPSON printers that can work with the app?

Before reading this post, I had no idea EPSON made things other than printers. After digging around a bit, it’s got somewhat of a diversified product line:

  • ld6772

They will have a special kind of e-ink display that costs $30 a month to ‘refill’

  • sdotunome

I think it will be a phone/time machine/printer… where you can make calls take pictures…… the image go back in time and relive the moment! Then print it when you done -_-

  • Shawn Flanagan

Maybe they are going the route HP took, and are adding “apps” to their printers.

  • Kris Isaksen

A printer with Android or something equally boring.

  • vitebsk66

How about a tablet that can make calls over 4G or wi-fi, with a built-in projector a-la the new Sony camcorder?

    • vitebsk66

Oh, and it would feature wireless printing, of course. ;-)

  • donger

It’s gotta be a some sort of projector. Maybe a portable tablet with a printer.

  • Adryan maldonado

YAY another possible Ink Guzzling monster printer. But the fact that it may android integrated is pretty cool especially if its not a printer

  • kusic
  • Jöran Schlömer

I hope it has something to do with a beamer!

    • Jöran Schlömer

      edit: I ment “a projector!”

  • FSFatScooter

  • tata

Epson has launched android head mount display “MOVERIO” in Japan.

  • Dirge

Hopefully it goes beyond what HP has with some of their newer printers, ePrint.

  • Santana

    Android powered printer display….hmm

  • sgumer

maybe epson is coming out with a printer that can work with an android phone and can print from the phone. maybe it is software for epson printers on android phones.

  • ibap

    A folding tablet?

  • azswift
  • Generica

“Help us OB1. You’re our only hope!”

  • superusermode

Wow. I didn’t even know Epson was still around.
