T-Mobile pits their Amaze 4G against the iPhone 4S

T-Mobile will likely never carry the iPhone, so they have returned to making fun of Apple’s best selling smartphone. Today T-Mobile uploaded a new video called The Battle of the Smartphones, which pits the camera of their HTC Amaze 4G against the iPhone 4S. In the video T-Mobile tells us that the iPhone 4S camera can’t hold up to “killer camera features” on the Amaze 4G like BurstShot, SmartShot panorama and SweepShot.

We think the iPhone 4S takes some amazing photos, but there’s no denying the Amaze 4G can also producing the goods as seen in our hands-on reports from Nick and Edgar. Check out T-Mobile’s video below and let us know if it’s silly to be comparing these two phones. Do you like when carriers and handset makers go after Apple?

I see the camera on my phone as a convenient tool, but I have never been sold a phone only on the camera. I won’t start now either.

    • stenzor

Same here.. I can’t speak for the majority of the population though.. they seem to be excited about things like Siri

      • mmmark111

I don’t see the appeal of Siri. I feel silly enough just using speak-to-text.

        • Bob

Siri is nice but something similar to it has been on the Android system for more than a year and definitely not something I would buy a phone for. 4g on the other hand is definitely something I want.

        • lxgeorge

It’s made all the worse when you’re actually talking TO your phone instead of into it

      • jamboy5590

Siri is just an app that can be made on any phone. I wouldnt buy a phone just because it has a cool app.

        • Moosa Mahsoom

i got a similar app on Android. but, the only problem was that it did not have deep integration into the Android system.

    • thechad

      I agree

    • cmorris

not that I am defending the Iphone 4s. I will never go back to iOS,

    • c1liu

very true. the quality of a camera depends mostly on the lens. and in cell phones, that usually means a plastic one. even if the megapixels are high, the quality of the photos are limited by the lens. from what i’ve seen, the features that seem to be most highlighted in camera phones are stuff like burst shot, stability, panoramic shot etc, which are software related. and there’s the old, no-lag shutter response, which is a mechanical improvement, but still doesn’t directly make the image better to compete with camera cameras.

      • Tangent

This has been driving me crazy for a long time with cell phone cameras. I don’t care if you cram a 20 megapixel sensor in there, if you’re still using a quarter-inch wide lens, the image quality will not be as good as a 6 megapixel DSLR with a halfway decent lens. It’s not exactly marketed to the same crowd as DSLRs though. People taking pictures with cell phones just want to get pics of friends or spur-of-the-moment events, they’re not trying to create art. To that end they simply advertise things that appeal to them, or sound good even if they don’t know why (super high megapixel count).

On the plus side the camera on my Sensation has gotten good enough that I feel no need to buy a compact point and shoot for when I don’t feel like carrying my DSLR. I don’t begrudge the improvements and features, but no matter how amazing it is for a cell phone, it’s pretty much the last feature that convinces me to get one device over another.

        • Moosa Mahsoom

what we need next is some kind nano-lense which can produce images better than the DSLRs.

    • desean

I agree. But then again, some people do seriously consider a phone’s camera as they use the phone as a replacement for P&S camera.

    • Moosa Mahsoom

Phones could outperform cameras when it comes to things like stitching panorama, auto focus etc.

the amaze is a great phone but .. tmo is going at it all wrong. they should have gotten the gnex and pit that against the iphone 4s

    • erikiksaz

Considering they’re willing to go the goofy route with this video (which is awesome that they’re willing to take it in a non-Carly direction), let’s hope they do a solid GN push.

Maybe by then Google’s Majel or whatever it was called will be out, so it’ll shut up all the Siri folks.

    • pikahatonjon

agreed! but between these two, amaze all the way.

    • Futureboy

Sure, but then T-Mobile would have had to officially come out and said, “yes, we will be carrying the Galaxy Nexus” which… correct me if I’m wrong… hasn’t happened yet, and won’t happen until some random mysterious day when all the planets are in alignment or something.

It would be so refreshing if companies dropped the veil of secrecy b.s. and just stated talking openly and honestly with their customers for a change.

Well the Amaze has better camera and specs than Gnex. Gnex has only ICS on the phone. Wait till the Amaze gets the ICS.

  • ArticulateFool

The camera on the Galaxy Nexus impressed me immeasurably. I wonder how it stacks up against the Amaze.

  • ramenchef

What’s funny is that the SGS2 camera edges out the 4S camera on most review sites. Not by much, though. I guess the t-mobile variant uses a different sensor since it has a different SoC as well?

    • Androidcrazed6

      what is SoC???

      • rchao

System on a Chip: Basically the chipsets/platforms nowadays that integrate different components (cpu/gpu/radios) onto one chip. i.e. Snapdragon, Tegra, etc.

  • pmex83

I think Tmobile only gives Apple more publicity and looks desperate in its attempts to show it’s frustration for not carrying an iphone. It should just educate consumers on the wonders of Android and let them decide for themselves which is the better operating system.

    • WarDrake

Nah… Going after apple is just plain fun ^_^
plus it’s all the rage now, haven’t you seen Samsung’s comercials?

  • jamal

    Go T-mobile.

  • jsweetser2

Funny vid, just wish Tmo would get their heads out of their asses and carry some relevant phones. Their line up is getting pretty weak, as Verizon gobbles up…EVERY f’ing phone on the planet.

    • itzxdjx

I was just thinking there same the need some better phones event AT&T Androids look more attractive to me!

    • mmmark111

New phones would be nice, but I would prefer more cell towers.

The video was fun, but I was wondering why the iPhone robot was green. Really thought at first that the green robot was HTC Amaze, since it is running Android.

  • geiko

I’m wondering if the AT&T deal was the reason why Google went with Verizon for the latest Nexus. I seriously hope they cut this crap next year. Apple’s stopped playing favorites with their phone’s carrier since January last year, yet Google still wants to play these stupid games. Samsung has proven that the carriers don’t mind carrying the same Android phone as the other guys. Just give them what they want, and let them each make their own fixes accordingly.

With all the delays, I’m guessing the problem was with quality assurance with the CDMA version of the phone, if there was a problem at all. If this was the case, and Google had released on several carriers at once, I’m pretty sure Verizon wouldn’t have been toying with us and either spill the beans on what’s taking so long and when we could expect it, or just release it with problems and wait for an OTA update. As it is, they’ve just let a bad taste in Android fans mouth. For everyone else, the iPhone that they now have is all they will know about.

  • Emmanuel Rodriguez

T-mobile is badass I’m glad I’m with them. Total Scott Pilgrim moment.

  • JC005

I’m not anti iPhone but seeing as how I’m on T-Mobile I haven’t had a chance to see for myself. I’d end up going with the amaze.

  • Stella

Good video for people who are interested in the camera features of their phone. Interestingly, I get a lot of compliments on the pictures from my Samsung Vibrant from my iPhone friends.

  • laosgurllynn

Im glad im with Tmobile. I prefer good camera quality.

  • Ilyse Rose

The camera isn’t the main feature when I look at a phone, but it can influence my decision, I think others feel the same way.
I also just like this commercial, it’s funny and informative.

  • Marcus

Android wins yet again. That iPhone Guy in the video is just like all my friends… -_- it bugs me. They don’t understand how unexposed they are!

    • Dan13

No kidding, all my iPhone loving friends act that way also.

They all think that Apple phones are way better than android phones.

    • Homncruse

As goofy as it was, the part of the video when the iPhone Guy said, “That’s adorable”, complete with condescending facial expression was spot-on.

  • myandroid99

t-mobile is just upset that they don’t have the iphone 4s thats y i don’t like being with them at least they have good service

  • Blaw

Fun video. I won’t pick my next phone just for the cam, but I guess some people do.

    • pekosROB

I’m definitely one of those people that do! Well, it’s not always #1, but it has to take decent pics. Unfortunately my Droid 3 isn’t the greatest at taking pics but it’s does it better than my EVO did.

  • Billy

That was awesome. Love the little robot win dance at the end. Hah! Now back to my mega man.

  • Benji Glazier

the camera sold me on the amaze 4g.
i think the hdr is far better on the 4s but in general the camera on the amaze is outstanding(hence the array of features and lack of false saturation).
paired with the rest of the specs it was a no brainer, but hey what can I say? i take alot of photos.

    • pritams

For HDR I definitely would suggest you to try out some app..I get amazing results..camera360 is what I’ve tried as I didn’t want to have a paid app for cam and seperate app for HDR..but there are few camera apps which are even better and few apps are specifically designed for HDR only..just search on market…

  • kwills88

Things like this is why I wish Google would invest in t-mobile.

  • Hall Lo

It’s funny when people compare megapixels on cameras on phones. If you want good quality photos go buy a digital camera or even a DSLR! Like the Galaxy Nexus, though it has only 5 mega-pixel, it has a fast shutter and that is what people should care about becoz camera on phones are for connivence but not quality! (Of coz i dun mean that phone camera should suck lol)

  • Matthew Reynolds

    love the video!

  • MoSDeeb

Why pit the amaze, it doesnt really shine above other phones. If tmobile offered the nexus then i would understand pitting it against the iphone 4s.

    • azswift

The Amaze is pretty much the Galaxy SII with a much better camera. This phone let’s you take pictures immediately without waiting for a camera app to startup, or so I understand from the marketing stuff.

  • Emmanuel Lazcano

    lol! :D

  • fenixshaw

I wonder what improvements ICS will bring to the software side of the camera in all phones that will support it, including the Amaze. With a lot of stuff being software reliant for proper rendering, I’m curious to see if things get better.

  • Androidcrazed6

Why the amze and not the S2??

  • humidity

    lol That was funny!

  • eliander mendoza

Yes Android wins this made my day :D but @Androidcrazed6 is right why not use GS2?

    • pritams

They might have thought well..after all it is Steve Jobs show it some respect..coz before S2 iPhone 4s might have become completely nakedO_o!!

  • h0ruza

Samsung brings out a great AD and they all start rushing in for the kill.
The thing is I haven’t come across an HTC phone that took images I liked yet. If they have been altered to be less cold and souless then these features tip the balance otherwise this AD will do more damage than good when users think differently and choose an iPhone on there next purchase because they felt dooped.

For a while I’ve been thinking that carriers are weakest link in the chain. They should hit the mark or don’t try at all and let the brands take lead on ideas as its their product.

  • SGB101

tmobile in the uk do sell iphones have done since the 3gs iirc.

people are saying above, about, not buying a phone for the camera, this is true, but it is a big swinger for most people, at least for parents, that want a decent point and shoot, for day to day things.

to my shame yesterday on the way to the school play, last thing i said to my wife was dont forget your iphone.

hopefully android manufactures will grasp this point and put a decent lens and sensor in the dam thing and stop trying to sell by pixels. we dont need anything above 5mpx as im not goint to print to a bill board.

ive hared the sammy g3 is upping its sensor greatly so heres hoping, even with all i said above if the the cameras is shit, im still getting it.

  • la_resistance28

The Amaze 4G’s camera is pretty sweet. I wish more phones would have physical shutter buttons, especially with the two-stage press for auto-focus. Not so fond of tapping the screen and obscuring the photo subject with my finger.

  • WlfHart

While I can’t say I’d expect a smartphone to replace a full fledged camera, it’s nice to have an all-in-one device in my pocket that can take a decent snapshot of something spontaneous.

  • PiTTDRoiD

It is quite clear that what bothers most is that the smartphone apple evolve much faster than its terminals. So they cease to be the pioneers in many options.

  • Samar

Did anybody notice that, ironically, the iPhone guy is the AndroidY Green color..That’s funny man.

  • Aleksandar Simov

    good for them

  • aranea

Any that shows people how apple products are just inferior has my approval.

  • Chuxter

    Haha, I like it!
The commercial is so cheesy, but who doesn’t like cheese? Yum!

    • donger

  • jiggybyte

If you can’t join them, beat them?

  • HoLfElDeR

    hahahahah interestnig video

  • Louis A

Take that iphony, that’s what you get for refusing to go to Tmobile network haha lol. Funny video, nice one tmobile.

  • zyphbear

While it may be a nice Camera, if that is all they have to compare, I think T-Mobile has more issues competing.

Personally, I’m surprised more smart Devices don’t have a faster shutter speed.

  • the5thdimension

I’m very into photography and so a good camera on my phone is very important to me. You never know when an opportunity can arise for an amazing shot.

Now with that being said, I have two actual cameras. You know, the kind that can’t make phone calls, play games, or stream Netflix.

It trips me out when I see people using a shitty camera phone for important moments in their life such as weddings, graduations, kids being born, baptism, kids prom, etc.

Anyway, I love when these carriers and handset manufacturers go after Apple. Well they’re actually going after Apple fanatics. They’re trying to save them. Trying to show them that the grass is greener on the Android side, and has been for quite a while now.

    • DroidPower

i think that for the more serious photographers such as yourself, you will carry a real camera other than the phone. The phone is for taking a quick photo on the go, like you said. Having “burst shot” or panorama seems like features better suited for a real camera.

Funny commercial concept, but TMo has to do something more to convince shoppers that a switch from the iphone is worthwhile ( ie all the other great features that Android has!).

  • theJP

It is convenient having a decent camera in my pocket, the camera is not a huge selling feature for my when buying a phone. Sweet video though.

  • Trinhbo

I love it when carriers and manufacturers go after Apple because Apple has been doing it for years against Microsoft and Android. It’s good that these companies are now fighting back. These commercials and jabs are good reminders to consumers that there ARE features on other devices that are currently better than the latest iPhones. A lot of uninformed people will just blindly assume that iPhones have better specs, better features, etc because it’s a more recognizable brand/device.

Though it is a little silly that anyone would pick this phone over another phone solely on the quality of the camera. At what point does it just become “really good enough”? I think we’ve long passed that threshold. I would assume that most people would never buy a new smartphone that did not have a camera either. Let’s assume the quality of the iPhone’s camera is a 9.5. If the Amaze’s camera is a 9.7, how would most people tell? Seems fairly subjective. If you truly wanted high quality shots, you’d use a real camera.

  • Jimmy13

Oh T-mobile lol. I love them and use them. Street fighter phone edition does make them look a little silly though.

  • honourbound68

Good vid. I don’t mind seeing commercials where competitors go after each other. As long as its in good taste,,

  • Matt

you know you can get apps for panorama shots and stuff…… kind of ruins the purpose of the vid

  • xwaylayx

This is great! How many time have you left your point and shoot at home on the table, but your phones in your pocket always.
The best camera is the one you have with you!

  • Laurel laurel25

I think these ads are awesome!

  • Wasabi

TMO has the best plans and service in the biz. They were the first with Android.Iphone is overpriced and overhyped imo. Go TMO! Show those Apple fanboys what they’re missing.

  • sgumer

the features and camera look good on the amaze, but i am not sure about the battery life or the ease of use compared to the iphone. only time will tell.

  • Danny Calderon

The one and only reason they keep comparing the phones is cause Tmobile doesn’t carry the iphone, if they did carry they would switch to carrier comparisons like Verizon and ATT have

  • custeve217

I love the video quality on my Vibrant. The camera is not bad either but shutter speed is too slow. What I realy wonder is why is T-Mobile the only left out of the iPhone loop. I like the IPhone but doubt I’d pick one over a Galaxy S II or other android phone.
