LG to start rolling out Android 4.0 updates in Q2 2012

With Android 4.0 being one of the most hyped updates for Google’s mobile operating system, most manufacturers have been announcing details about their plans to roll out software upgrades. No one wants to stay behind, right? LG has just given us another update about their upgrade plans, and it looks like Q2 is when LG customers should begin to see Android 4.0.

During the second quarter of 2012 upgrades will begin for the following smartphone models: the LG Optimus LTE, Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse. These upgrades will be followed by upgrades for the following smartphone models during the third quarter of 2012: the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus Black, the LG Optimus Big, the LG Optimus Q2 and the LG Optimus EX.FacebookLG Mobile

As you can see, that pretty much covers all the newest devices from LG and then some. There is a small discrepancy here, though. What is going to happen with the US variants of some of these smartphones? LG was not quite clear about the future of devices like the AT&T Thrill 4G (Optimus 3D), T-Mobile G2X (Optimus 2x), AT&T Nitro HD (Optimus LTE), and the Verizon Revolution?

While we understand that a global update is the most necessary, we would also like some details for the US-variant. We have reached out to LG Mobile, asking them about the future of these American smartphones, and will update this article with any information, once given.

Stay tuned, as LG Mobile promises to give more specific details when possible. Who is getting an update? Are you satisfied with the given time-frame?

I’m glad they have been added to the list of OEMs that have said they will update their devices instead of just leaving customers behind. I bet the US versions will follow shortly of the Global ones.

    • Jorge Eslava

I agree, the only difference with the US versions is the carriers having to to meddle with the software.

    • LukeT32

By that time there will be a new version of Android and they will be a year behind already…. plus by the time the carriers mess with the software it will be atleast Q4.

      • Jon-Michael McMasters

It’s ridiculously amazing how accurate your post was. I’ve been waiting for the ICS update for my MyTouch Q for so long, I just bought the new Galaxy S3. But it amazes me that it’s taken LG this long for the update. Do you really think it’s just the carriers that are taking their time with this? Idk, but now I’m getting excited for the new JellyBean update coming to my phone in October!

    • lancaster09

What people should really be concerned about is there lack of support for their first tablet the G-Slate with TMo! I can’t believe I bought this at Black Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Homncruse

I think you lost an exclamation point in there somewhere. Don’t worry though, I found it!

  • Pepr

What takes them so long? 6 month from now in mobile industry terms is quite a lot! I would be mad if I owned an LG

    • DroidPower

True that! 6 months from now there could be a new version of ICS or even a whole new Android os!

    • erikiksaz

Scary thing is that promised update timelines will probably not coincide with the real release timelines. So 8 months down the line we would all be using non -LG phones anyways :-/

      • Samar

Well said. LG is somewhere lost in the race. Q2 2012 seems so far and we all know that there will be upgraded software and hardware by then. LG needs to step its game. It’s either Android or Windows.

    • TaoRenCe

I am mad! Well at least Cyanogenmod won’t let me down.

    • erimin

They prefer to make their efforts on constructing new smartphone instead of upgrading on Ics faster. On the other hand they WILL upgrade… at least. My opinion is that this announcement it will cost them (negatively) future customers who concern about REAL support. Thank God there is CM!

  • Alexander drzfr3shboialex

They probably are comitting to Q2 so they dont say Q1 and disappoint people

  • Ralph

What would happen to the G-Slate?!?!?!?!?!?! I DEMAND SUPPORT!!! :(

    • ajonrichards

Man, I too wonder if I’m going to get any ICS love for the G-Slate

  • YellowDucati

If it takes until Q2 2012 for LG to get ICS it will take US carriers another 2 quarters to get it on their devices.

  • Marcus

I’m glad LG spoke up and said when they would start updating their phones. At least some phones are being updated. That’s a huge step up for LG.

  • jamal adam

That’s a long time but at least we know they will upgrade their phones. Now it’s time for the others to do the same.

  • GeauxLSU

Hopefully the US carriers won’t slow down the manufacturers update timelines.

  • redraider133

And this is why I am going with a nexus from here on out. Especially with how the US carriers like to do their own testing, hopefully they will be able to get most of the bugs worked out unlike past updates..

  • damambt

hopefully ics will give the G2X the much needed fixes

  • vid500

Ok, but I was hoping that all the manufacturers would be a bit faster with the ICS update. Six months isn’t a little time in the mobile industry.

  • Richard Yarrell

This is all STANDARD everyone wants to say something regarding updates. Yeah LG say’s this MOTO say’s that HTC say’s this yada yada yada yada…The prove is definately in the pudding TALK IS CHEAP FOLKS. NONE of these manufacturers will have updated any device before April/May 2012. Trust me EVERYONE will see NEW DEVICE RELEASED in early 2012 with ice cream sandwich BEFORE old devices GET UPDATED you can BANK ON THAT…..I miss certain elements of my past EVO 4G and EVO 3D but now I know what it’s like to have a stock android device and I am proud that I made the purchase of my lovely GALAXY NEXUS. Nothing beats this device period

  • mdwilson37

All I read was “LG Optimus” lol

  • Nathan D.

well hopefully the USA devices of LG will get updated at the same time as the international ones

  • rzentz

I’ve never seen LG as a viable competitor. When’s the last time that LG released an android device that people were dying to purchase? I’m coming up with nothing.

    • CactusCat

In the US, it was the G2x. It was the first dual core phone in the US and it also had stock android on it. People were VERY anxious to get it. However, it had bugs and slow response from both TMo and LG. I actually think I know what was causing the bugs, but the damage was done. I still have one and its remarkably good. Still super fast, no problems as reported from others. Mine does everything well. I really feel for my G2x brothers and sisters that had problems. They’ll respond by not buying future LG products.

  • Max

Clearly since they are WAITING until Q2 for the release on the listed phones, that must mean that the phones NOT listed will be what is taking all the time in Q1. They just forgot the release that press junket before this one. So I will EXPECT my LG Revolution to be updated in Q1. I’ll start calling, texting, blogging, complaining LOUDLY if I dont have it by the end of the second week in January. It’s the least I can do The last update turn my Revolution in a multi-daily-rebooting annoyance and Verizon cant fix it. I’m hoping the next update fixes some bugs. Pretty sure at this pint though my next phone wont be LG.

  • haters on the rocks

Lets all hope they update this and the g2x gets the ice cream sandwich. I’m hopping

  • BigCiX

Add 2 to three months for US versions due to bloatware. I’m done with any android phone besides a Nexus.

  • Macoi

    really pissed at LG.
they promised GB update on 4th week of december for the optimus black but so far no news about the update at all.
can’t believe i’m still on froyo. xD

  • myandroid99

im not going to wait for these updates cynagenmod comes out much faster

  • CTown

It’s pretty much offical, if you want updates on a T-Mobile phone either buy a (SELECT) HTC phone or a Nexus device!

  • Danny Calderon

How do they come out with update for mytouch Q but not the regular mytouch

    • redraider133

Because they want you to buy a new phone every year or so. Not the best standpoint as a manufacturer but they have no incentive to update the phones(other than maybe try and get repeat customers)

  • Dboy352

It will be interesting to see which phones get it and can run it stable. I mean shoot look at the 2.3 update for the Optimus S, Epic FAIL

  • Adryan maldonado

While its not super quick its really nice to see somewhat actual time frame. Kudos LG. Kudos

  • fatspirit

Dear manufacturers! Please give us vanilla devices [right now] and your stuff as an optional update [later] – EVERYONE would be happy!

  • lobsterlobby

It’s great to see that manufacturers are starting to update devices more and more. Healthy competition I say.

  • rantmo

Well if I wasn’t done with LG already, this does the trick. It’s certainly nice of them to offer some response as to their plans; credit where it’s due. But Q2? Really? It’s going to take them that damn long to roll out ICS, the update they knew was coming and that they knew *everyone* would all but demand to have? And then to continue to be evasive about the status of the G2x, which they all but wanted to make their flagship phone not to long ago? It’s shameful. The manufacturers all need to be better about transparency with update plans and need to be prompt in those updates but LG just doesn’t seem to give the least bit of a damn. I’ll be a one-off LG owner and I know I’m not alone.

  • mikeyDroid

If LG can get these updates rolling out fast and successful it could really bring some credibility to their brand with Android products.

  • donger

nice, LG is updating their phones to ics.

  • Nicholas Fowler

Luckily I’m not all that worried about my G2x getting the update, using a custom ROM and all.

  • Brian Horstmann

I just need to know when an ICS rom will be out for my old X….

  • staryoshi

It’s good that more and more manufacturers are committing to an ICS update, but it would definitely be appreciated to see them roll out more quickly. Hopefully the US versions will follow shortly after the global models.

  • Tran Lang

I’m disappointed that the G2x is not on the list.

  • spazby

how about motorola photon upgrade, the so called flagship device…

  • morris105

Such great potential for the G2x and they still can’t get it right? TMo who knows what will happen…
