Verizon experiencing nationwide data outage (Update: Slowly coming back online)

Verizon customers across the country are waking up finding themselves confused and distraught this morning. Okay, maybe it’s not that dramatic, but Verizon is currently experiencing a nationwide data outage on both its 3G and 4G LTE networks, leaving Verizon’s customers with no access to their precious interwebs.

This is not the first time Verizon’s had problems with their data network this month. Prior to the launch of the Galaxy Nexus superphone, the LTE network was experiencing some problems that were quickly remedied. Hopefully Verizon will be able to fix their network quickly. We’ve reached out to Verizon for an update, but have not heard back from Verizon as of press time.

Is everyone out there on Verizon having connectivity issues this morning? Sound off below. Or, if you need some entertainment this morning, be sure to check out the VZW Support twitter feed, which is updating very quickly this morning.

Update 9:29am: Some users out there are reporting that LTE is coming back online for them. Still no data connectivity on my Galaxy Nexus here in Minneapolis, on either 3G or 4G.

Update 10:51am: I have data… sort of. 3G appears to be back, and it appears 4G LTE is back online for many (though still not here in Minneapolis).

Update 11:00am: Verizon has issued the following statement. “Verizon Wireless 4G LTE service is returning to normal this morning after company engineers worked to resolve an issue with the 4G network during the early morning hours today.   Throughout this time, 4G LTE customers were able to make voice calls and send and receive text messages. The 3G data network operated normally.”

3G data operated normally? Tell that to my Galaxy Nexus, which had no LTE OR 3G connection from 7am to just now.

This is the one time I’m happy I have AT&T. I haven’t ever experienced a data outage with them. My friends who have Verizon have had multiple data outages that I know of. That would really annoy me.

    • YMS123

No outage on AT&T, but no Galaxy Nexus explosion either

      • Charlesbrown79

Very true, but what good is a phone if you can’t use all of it functions?

        • Steve Barry

You’d be amazed at how many people castrate their phone for sakes of ‘battery life’ and turn a $300 super-smart phone into a back of the woods, redneck phone. Turn off data, put it into airplane mode and then try to brag how much they love the battery life on their phone because they’ve gone 2.5 days without a recharge. I simply don’t get it.

          • Charlesbrown79

            So true.

    • redraider133

Usually only the lte phones are affected not the 3g phones.

      • LukeT32

Agreed. I don’t think anyone in central Iowa had any issues.

    • Deter

Apparently you either didn’t have AT&T back then or just don’t remember what happened to the data network when the iPhone launched.

Trolling with racial comments is pretty immature and not cool (not that trolling is anyhow.) But seriously, you’re better off making pro-Apple comments instead of sounding like a bigot. You’ll probably get even more downvotes that way.

        Just a tip.

      • Mark

Those kool aid Apple comments aren’t working for you anymore I see, huh Ben?

    • Sean the Electrofreak

No problems here on Sprint either, and I roam onto Verizon for free so I can’t complain.

  • mac08wrx

I have a Verizon 3G connection on my stupid work BlackBerry in St. Paul, MN.

    • Anthony Domanico

really?? that’s nuts! I can’t get shit on my Galaxy nexus in Mpls.

      • Drew

Plymouth, MN and Buffalo, MN – (normally LTE) and I’m getting 3G only. I had to double check I didn’t turn off my LTE, lol.

    • Thomas Biard

I have sevice in Southern California…no data loss that i’ve noticed thus far.

  • frpst9

Mine was out (3g and 4g) in the Pittsburgh area around 8:00 AM. 3g was restored about 10 minutes later and 4g has bounced off and on since then (and still is as we speak). Hopefully they can get the kinks worked out in short order.

  • NegativeOne13

I have no data in NE Kansas.

  • stenzor

I feel bad for Verizon.. things are just not going well for them lately

  • Futureboy

I’m not a huge Twitter fan, but that’s the one thing I think it’s great for, a steady stream of immediate breaking news.

    • Futureboy

      … and updates.

  • JLix

And I was beginning to think it was just my Nexus!!!! Yes, I have 3 to 4 bars but instead of them being blue, they are gray. Been out since 6 and is now 8:30. Signal comes and goes but mainly goes.

  • triangle

I saw all of these headlines about a data outage and thought my phone wouldn’t work, but 3G was working fine, while 4G was out. I’m in NYC.

It would be nice to get an explanation from Verizon about what’s going on, especially if the 4G data outages persist.

lots o people complaining on DA about this

    • BiGMERF

      • tpulu

For a second there I was like, “they’re taking about the data outage on Deviant Art??” Lol

    • YMS123

At least this doesn’t affect your GSM Nexus :)

  • Craig LeBaron

Data was completely out for me in New Orleans. I’ve had 3g back for about an hour now.

  • psipher

Shouldn’t we get a prorated credit when the network goes down. Netflix does it when streaming is down.

    • w9jds

If they did that RIM would be out so much money.

    I just got 3g back..

  • dpleus

3G service is up and running in the Triple Cites, NY.

  • Dan Jones

Good thing I’m staying at home today with my nice reliable Wifi. I wouldn’t even have realized had I not read this story.

Although, even if it was a normal day, I think I could last the hour between home and work without Internet. With Wifi being available so many places, it’s just not that big of a deal.

  • Shadowlore

The outage this morning was a brief window of roughly 1.5 hours here in St Louis. Data started cutting out about 6am as I was driving in, and it was back and operational around 7:30ish.

Overall, small outage, but an outage nonetheless. Really wish they’d be more open as to why they’re having outages… I don’t think people mind technical issues, as long as the company would be open and forthcoming with what’s going on.

  • plasmoidia

3G working fine on my (3G-only) Droid2 in Huntsville, AL.

  • Bbiiii

4G is up in Minneapolis on my thunderbolt.

  • GeauxLSU

No problems with 3g in Baton Rogue LA

  • Ray Tchoulakian

I have only 3G connection on my Galaxy Nexus in Baltimore. I had no connection earlier this morning, but it’s working for now on a slower connection. This is KILLING me – I’m such a data plan whore.

  • Quinn Fowler

I woke up to only 3g on my Nexus. At least I have that though.

  • Suz

Keeps going in and out of 3G all morning on my Galaxy Nexus. Haven’t had 4G at all in the past 6hrs or so. Phoenix, AZ

  • amgala

When are we going to get some credits back from Verizon for all of these outages???

  • Grout

I was a T-Mobile customer for 8 years and never experienced a single outage.

I’ve been on Verizon for less than a week and I was without data all morning. It came back about an hour ago (Pittsburgh, PA).

This is what I get for selling my soul.

  • ben dover

3g wasn’t working for me so I flipped over to 4g and got a connection.

Welcome to my first week as a verizon customer! :)

  • miked

3G and 4G working just fine in Kansas City

  • tpulu

I’ve been stuck on 1x since about 1am here in Northern California…

  • Wayne

I have 3G back here in Orlando. No 4G. Nexus.

  • redraider133

No issues here. Solid signal, no data loss. Hopefully verizon can get this figured out amd fixed quick.

  • Louis A

I am actually cool, bot 3G and 4G services.

  • shawn

Not having any issues on my galaxy nexus on verizon in NYC

  • djembeman

Woke up to no data. I switched to 3G only and it’s solid. 4G is dead in Colorado Springs.

  • kusine

3G has worked just fine in Columbus, Ohio, since at least 7 this morning.

  • jefflarkin

Wow, I almost switched to Verizon, so I guess I’d have no data access right now from my office. Oh wait, I have AT&T, I have no data access from my office every day. =/

  • Jon Shiflett

It was weird my wife had data on my old fascinate, and I had nothing on my nexus. No 3 or 4g.

Stupid Fascinate still pissing me off even when I don’t use it.

    • redraider133

It seems like if lte goes down it usually screws up the data on 3g for lte devices but does not affect 3g devices. Verizon should look into why it does not affect 3g devices and maybe be able to figure out a fix for lte phones.

  • Leo

I have no access right now to Verizon’s 3g or 4g here. Stockton Ca >:(

  • Skis03

No problems with my 3G connection in Phoenix this morning.

  • Lee Swanson

My 4g seems to be up. Minneapolis.

  • muchachodelcampo

No 3G/4G on my TBolt in North Jersey…not cool….on the plus side, it is the best battery life my TBolt has experience since the last data outage!

  • Torrance Barber

That’s too bad..I can sympathize with their customers. There are huge pockets in downtown Chicago where I can’t get a signal with T-Mobile. Makes it difficult to hang out when you can’t contact them.

  • nytobos

I’m in Boston and I went to bed last night and woke up this morning with no data but I turned my phone off and on and since then I’ve been pretty good. It sucks but they’re trying I think …?

  • Jeremy Johns

I have 3G with my Dinc2 and I have nothing… Normally I would not be too worried but my work wifi is having issues today as well.. Verizon is the best carrier for blanketing the US with coverage so when things go wrong I’m guessing it is on a huge level and not easily remedied.

Guess I’m SOL for the day or longer.

  • josegb2011

yeah my 3g and 4g was on and off on my nexus but is working just fine maryland..

  • dafi81

oh my god the world is ending ….

    • McLovin

This is exactly how they will begin the attack …

  • redxeth

I’m glad I’m on Sprint. But overall I think Verizon’s network is better– this is just a temporary setback like all networks have. Sprint had initially some issues too with the iphone.

  • kimminer1

a very good day to be home with your wifi

  • Chuxter

IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT (and I feel fine because I’m on T-mobile)

  • Ben Rollier

Hmmm, 3G is working fine here in Phoenix.

  • ramenchef

What’s going on with verizon these past few weeks? What is usually a reliable network has gone twice now this month.

  • Eric G Canoy

None here in the Bay Area

  • pekosROB

Verizon is working well here in East Texas (well 3G, we don’t have that FANcy 4Gs like y’all big city folk).

  • David Hughes

Just a little growing pains, I am sure they were flooded with all new nexus on their network and did not plan as usual, still better network than most, just poor customer service

  • Billy

I must have overslept and missed all the phone. Central TX seems okay as of now.

  • Jayson Olson

Is it me, or did the whole Verizon network start getting more and more wacky once the Razr came out. Now, I’m not saying (and I’m smart enough to know) that it’s the Razr’s fault, but I noticed that when my wife got hers on launch day, my Bionic was was having data issues.

Since then, with more and more LTE’s coming on line now, I just noticed a sporadic and random 3G/4LTE signal outage moreso than even before.

Is it possible that Verizon’s LTE network isn’t robust enough, or can’t keep up with all the new phones coming on line?

  • tequilya

I happened to have 4G turned off this morning to see if it would reduce battery consumption. A coworker who rarely turns on wifi came by to ask if I’d had any data problems as he was disconnected completely. I turned off my wifi, which fell back to 3G just fine and was working. I know he was planning to restart his phone and I think it must have worked as I’ve not heard more. We both have Galaxy Nexus phones.

I’d heard that at times the radios can become confused so wonder if he lost 4G and was unable to get to 3G due to that glitch. I think toggling airplane mode on/off might be a quicker way to recover rather than restarting the phone, I’ll have to try that if I run into it.

  • mikef3j

3G only in SoCal for me right now..

  • jimtravis

    Boston, MA
3G is working fine, can’t get 4G signal in my house, so brought phone outside. For the brief time I was outside, no 4G.

  • Boyd

3G has been working fine all morning on my Fascinate in Austin, TX.

  • mikef3j

Mine is back now in Chicago, just in time since the train ride home will be boring otherwise after work

  • zyphbear

While it was many hours that it was offline, it wasn’t as bad as some of the other outages have been (Like those with Blackberry in not so recent past). At Least they worked pretty quickly in getting it back up and running.

  • HogFan77

That’s why I stuck with 3g for my latest upgrade. I don’t need 4g here at work, I have wi-fi at home, and I like my 30-40 hours on a single charge. It seems that Big Red has a 4g outage at least once a month.

    • djembeman

I have seen 3 4G outages since they launched here in Colorado Springs in June or July. 6 months with only a few three to four hour outages. It’s not bad! And if you know how to switch to CDMA only to pick up 3G service, it’s not a big deal.

  • Ryan Gails

This is the one thing that would annoy me if I was on Verizon. Glad my AT&T data never has an outage. Depending on how this whole not buying T-Mobile thing effects pricing and stuff for Ma Bell might make me switch to VZW though.

  • djembeman

Hey, so those of you who are saying that you had no 3G data, are you switching to CDMA Only mode??? I didn’t get 3G until I switched data modes. Colorado Springs. Bionic!

  • Marcus

Verizon has had a lot of trouble with their 4G network, it seems.

    Good thing I’m on AT&T!

  • Adryan maldonado

This data connection issue has been really annoying. After the first outage my signal seemed to improve. now i can barely keep a signal. Cmon verizon get it together

  • humidity

I woke up this morning to no data connection at all…

  • donger

    oh verizon.

  • Josh G

I never once had a loss of service on my Droid X in Kentucky, although I am not 4G LTE my friend that was with me was using one and we were up all night with no worries. Joy Joy

  • cquinterox

I thought I had messed up my new Thunderbolt after I installed a 4G toggle app when this happened. Was scared for a bit. hah

  • Elcio

I can’t believe, I came tonight, I had got my new Galaxy Nexus. When I finished activation. the #$%&@## phone doesn’t work. I called Verizon and they tell me “lil glitch”. A nationwide problem, called “lil glitch”?

Now, my old phone is not working. I am taking it back, and let me get something reliable.
Does anybody know any reliable 4G carrier?
