Video: NVIDIA gives a taste of Tegra 3′s power with Shadowgun, controllers are a go

One of the main reasons to get a Tegra device is the gaming power that such products pack. This year, Tegra 2 processors can be found in the guts of some of the best phones and tablets of 2011. Dual-core Tegra 2 processors have taken mobile gaming to another level, but as competition rises, NVIDIA is taking things up a notch for 2012.

Many of you probably know that the Asus Transformer Prime is the first tablet to come with NVIDIA’s next generation quad-core Tegra 3 processor. The Transformer Prime is probably the most powerful Android tablet right now, and many of you are surely planning on snatching one of these tablets up very soon.

Just in case you have been on the fence about it, though, NVIDIA has decided to show you just how good Tegra 3 is. Improvements can mostly be seen in the effects and graphics, as NVIDIA explains:

The Tegra 3-optimized version of Shadowgun features console-quality water, enhanced rag-doll physics, particle effects, enhanced shaders and dynamic textures. These are only possible using Tegra 3’s multi-core capabilities, and they make for a truly immersive and realistic gaming experience.Hassan AnjumNVIDIA

If NVIDIA’s demonstration is not enough to persuade the hard-core gamer within you, support for external controllers might. It is important to note that Tegra 3 features support for Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, and many other popular controllers. We went over this feature during our Transformer Prime first impressions, and it works great. Not to mention HDMI mirroring, which would allow you to take your games to the bigger screen.

Check out our Tegra 3 gaming demonstration (controller support), and hit the comments section to give us your 2 cents. What do you guys say? Are you getting a Tegra 3 device? Will ti be the Transformer Prime, or will you be waiting for another option?

US release is just three days away!

      • Craig Mogi

Where did you hear that it was three days out? Man, I must be out of the loop. Glad i already pre-ordered mine.

    • faun

I’ll be interested to see once the Prime comes out how warm it gets running this kind of game.

I mean it’s amazing to me that they could get this kind of performance out of a passively-cooled system at all!

    • Victor Feitosa

Yeah, my PC doesnt run that stuff so i think i’ll do it too.

Wow looks EPIC!!! selling everything I can for this..LOL

    • stenzor

Agreed. If I have to sell my soul to buy one, I’m doing it.

      • Futureboy

I already sold my soul and I’m still about $100 short. Rats.

        • walt

          dam, you’re pretty worthless

It does look sweet, but since I don’t have any plans to get a Tegra 3 phone / tablet in the near future, I’m going to be relying upon OnLive to provide me with console-quality games (because they actually are console games!).

Definitely not knocking Shadowgun or some of the other sweet mobile games out there… they’re certainly a lot cheaper than paying for console games, but I’m absolutely in love with OnLive.

  • zyphbear

This looks fantastic! I’m so glad more companies are getting the idea to do good games on tablets and even let you use a controller too! Real Gaming on the go!

    • Alex

Now I wanna see this on a phone! The possibilities are staggering!

  • Piotr Andrzejewski

Tegra 3 + HDMI + wireless controler = decent gaming console substitute

I really like this idea. Well done NVIDIA!

    • Hank

Like you said, decent. I definitely wouldn’t call this console like graphics, unless we’re talking about the Wii.

    • faun

Skip the HDMI… Powerful Tablet + Wireless controller = perfect traveling-companion!

  • myandroid99

    Never heard of it

  • pekosROB

So is the Dec 12 date for online stores still a go for the Prime? I still haven’t gotten word of my preorder being shipped yet or any other updates. :-(

I will definitely be looking more into gaming once I get mine, I already have an Xbox 360 and PS3 so this would be great for being on the go. Especially if Sony realizes how much money can be had if they just released their games online via the Market. I’m looking at you too Nintendo!

  • Mike Hanel

this is gonna get the major console company’s attention! why get an xbox when you can carry all you need in your pocket… these android games have come a long way in the past couple years!

  • ndub21

That is so awesome. How am I going to be able to live with my Galaxy Tab 10.1 once these Tegra 3 devices come out???

  • SuperAndroid

    Legen… wait for it… …Dary!

  • keridel

I’ve been playing shadowgun on my asus with a wired controller today. it looks the same. maybe a bit smoother…

  • Brook Marin

I remember seeing cars moded to fit wii’s and x-box’s… won’t be long until we see them modded for these gaming tablets!!

    • Futureboy

Here’s a slick install of an HTC tablet in a Nissan Juke that I came across the other day.
      Pretty sweet.

The question is, what car would you need to fit a 10 inch Prime into the dash like that?
I suppose a good installer would find a suitable alternate location if they couldn’t cram it into the dash.

      • Brook Marin

i saw some trunk mods similar to this one:

but with much better integration… i just can’t find it at the moment, but for gaming with your friends at a tailgate, this would be pretty cool.

  • Darkseider

Let’s not forget that OnLive + Tegra3 is going to be awesome as well. Between that and the natove THD games coming to the Tegra Zone the Prime may be the first step to showing how mobile devices such as phones and tablets may some day supplant consoles.

  • Eric Fortin

This looks great but i still cant think of replacing my 280$ PS3 with a 600$ Tablet… maybe on next year’s christmas the tegra 3 tablets will be 250$ like the tegra 2 tablets now ( Viewpad s10 was 250$ at BestBuy) !

  • theJP

Wow! That game sure looks a lot like GoW but still amazing on a tablet.

  • Wojciech ZiÄ™tek

    WOW! nothing more just WOW!

  • ArticulateFool

    Do want!

  • jhtyrhtr

wow controller…anything with bluetooth will work just ned software support.
As for tegra 3 we all know nvdia marketing tactics i wouldn’t doubt the nvidia “optimized version would run fine on dualcore xynos or 543
i cant wait for the quadecore cortex9 sgx543 that will be a powerhouse …same stuff that power pspvita

  • Fabio R

it looks so sweet I want a tegra 3 device! maybe androidandme will have something for the 24th for me :)

  • calihawki

My Prime is already pre-ordered! I can’t wait to give my wife my Xoom and get my hands on the Prime!!

  • James Conley

So wishing I had a dual core device right about now.

    • phaet2112

Most are really cheap around xmas- easy enough to pick one up for $200 or so.

  • thaghost

Hmm (scratching my head)…NVIDIA has me thinking. with the galaxy nexus debacle, i should wait for the first tegra 3 phone with ice cream sandwich.

  • Elliot Powell

I know other companies are going to come out with their own Tegra3 tablets but I think I am still going to be an early adopter and pick this one up

  • eioous

Pretty soon it will be like playing a 360 on our phone.

  • Hall Lo

That’s impressive on a tablet ;D more tempting for me to get a transformers prime now!

  • smisa27

Wow! These graphics are amazing! I am loving the quality and the intensity the game puts out. At first, I was going to get the the Prime once it became available. But when I heard and saw that Android 4.0 is capable of and with the cool features of NFC, I am waiting for a good quad-core with NFC. I sure hope ASUS will be able to come out with one soon. Because I am loving their brand and quality for tablets.

  • damambt

when your foes hide within the darkness of the shadows, theres always a way for good to prevail. Shadowgun is your answer!!!!!!!!

  • humidity

I can’t wait! Between the Galaxy Nexus and Transformer Prime, I don’t know which one I want more!

  • lokidokie

Awesome. Been playing that beast on Tegra 2, and that looks like a decent step up.

  • IntlGrizzly

This game looks really freaking amazing for a tablet…wish I had one to play it on

  • Alex Pena

Now I wish I had a tablet! Time to head to 25 Day’s of Tegra :)

  • donger

  • desean

Wait until Exynos 5250 is out. That is going to be even more impressive!

  • shadow

Just awesome, best graphic on a mobile I’ve ever seen

  • phaet2112

Although the graphics appear to be pumped up, the gameplay doesn’t look much beyond really simple duke nukem style point and shoot. People seem to be getting far too into just the smoke and background textures.

  • Anthropic

I so hope there is a Transformer prime waiting for me to win it in the 25 days competitions!

  • Dan Jones

    I’d love a Transformer Prime.

Also, the fact that this game supports controllers is fantastic. One of the things that’s prevented me from getting into Android gaming is all the onscreen controls. It’s incredibly frustrating that my fingers keep getting in the way of the on-screen action. I’ve thought about getting an Xperia Play just so I wouldn’t have to deal with that, but this is even better. Heck, I could easily carry a WiiMote with me on the subway for my daily commute.
