Microsoft preparing to bring Xbox Live to Android?

While Microsoft’s marketshare with Windows Phone is terrible at best, the same can’t be said for video game consoles. With almost one million consoles sold the week of Black Friday 2011, Xbox is king when it comes to interactive living room entertainment. Much as it’s done with Office in the past, Microsoft realizes that there’s a place for Xbox and the services associated with the console outside of its own ecosystem. A recent job posting with Microsoft reveals the company’s ambitions to expand beyond their own products.

Back in early December, Microsoft released an Xbox companion app for iOS. The app allows iOS users to manage all the social aspects of Xbox Live right from the iDevice of their choosing. Of course, the Windows Phone features a much more in-depth experience, but the fact that Microsoft is developing for other platforms is a good sign that their head is in the right place.

According to a job posting from Microsoft, the company is now looking to “to bring the latest and greatest gaming and entertainment experience to mobile platforms including Windows Phone, iOS and other mobile platforms.” Under the qualifications for the posting, Android development experience is listed as a “big plus.”

No specifics were mentioned as to what Microsoft plans to release for Android, but location based gaming and social networking were listed as just two of the “interesting user scenarios” new hires would be working with.

As an Xbox user myself, I can’t wait to see what Microsoft has in store. They’ve done some amazing things with Kinect lately, it would be nice to see some innovative Xbox powered gaming brought to Android.

    • iamXiV92a

YES! I was definitely hoping for this!!

  • Phil

I wonder what that means for those of us who don’t have an xbox.

Then it probably means there’s another app in the Market that you don’t want. Not sure why you ask…

Wow, this would be great! I always have to eat some humble pie when my buddy with a WP7 visits and talks about his XBoxLive integration on his phone. Once this happens, I’ll get my pride back in that area! I still likes me some 720p display over his little crappy display. :-D

….or you could get a girlfriend, then you’d have better things to do than to spend time comparing XBox compatibility from your phones.

@SED: or YOU could get a girlfriend, then you’d have better things to do then to spend time complaining about how others choose to spend their time.

        I’m married, thank you.

xbox > ‘relashuns’ with wife. I know this from experience….. Twice over. :o

    Makes sense for MicroSoft too.

Bring it on. Although the app called xboxlive statistics is awesome

  • Trinhbo

I wonder if this is going to be similar to what OnLive is providing where you can purchase a game once and then play it through the cloud on your device.

I figure Microsoft would want for you to buy a game through Xbox Live onto your Xbox 360 but then be able to play or continue to play the same games through your Android or other mobile phones.

    • WlfHart

If they really unveiled a way to play 360 games (probably smaller games like those from the arcade) on an Android phone I think I’d swoon…

      • Trinhbo

Actually you can already play full games on Android with OnLive such as Batman Arkham City. Check out the demos on it if you haven’t already — very impressive stuff. The controls are clunky on the phone’s smaller screen size but it would be great on a tablet.

There is still a bit of lag and whatnot. It would be nice to have native support which is what I think he’s talking about.

          • WlfHart

            Would be very nice indeed.

  • Ironzey Lewis

I love it. That was the only thing I was envious of WP7. Now I can completley ignore WP7.

  • redraider133

Maybe bring games to android to try and combat Sony and their line of games on certain phones?

  • thekaz

Cool! More ammunition in convincing my wife i need an xbox!

  • bbman

I just find it funny that the picture used for this shows an upside down Xbox…clearly the author isn’t very familiar with Xbox even though he claims to be an Xbox user..

    • redraider133

      It isn’t upside down…..

    • stenzor

      Clearly you are an Australian

Hopefully this will make Sony release a Playstation app as well or more precisely improve their current one and release it for US players as well.

I’m sure most would want more out of the app but as long as the app correctly displayed which of my friends were online, I’d be happy.

  • Oskar Wismierski

    ps3 all the way!

Xbox Live is the ONLY reason I would ever be interested in a Windows Phone. This would be full of win!

Hell, at least get an app that is a phone friendly version of xbox.com at the very least! I donated to the dev that has one and it’s an excellent app.

  • lokidokie

Yeah this would be great. As a new Xbox user, I was actually kinda surprised they didn’t have something of this sort out already!

  • CJ LaFleur

Can we get psn on android too? I want ps3 game for my transformer prime!

  • Nathan D.

Sweet, I would love this if they did this.

  • danielmkim

This sounds great. I wonder if this is gonna be a part of the xbox gold live account.

  • alee

It’s impossible to be sure whether Microsoft will bring games with Xbox Live integration to platforms that they don’t own, or if they’ll just have apps similar to the iOS Xbox Live companion app on Android.

BTW, the European PSN app for iOS has similar capabilities to Microsoft’s iOS app; they are both mainly for the social networking aspects of PSN / Xbox Live.

  • n25philly

X-Box would be nice, Zune would be amazing!

  • spazby

    C’mon playstation!!!

  • bigrob029

i really hope they at least do something similar to the iOS app… ignoring the android train is big mistake.

  • Jon Garrett

“The app allows iOS users to manage all the social aspects of Xbox Live right from the iDevice of their choosing.”

    who cares

bring Xbox games to tablets instead !!
