Android 4.0.3 rolling out to Motorola Xoom test users now

Motorola has had some sort of secret project being prepared for users of their Xoom Feedback Network for quite some time now. There were plenty of guesses as to what it could be, one of the more popular being an update to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. Today, it has been confirmed that Motorola’s project is indeed ICS for Xoom.

The update to Android 4.0.3 has already started rolling out to test users with both the WiFi only and LTE versions of the Motorola Xoom. Since the Xoom is considered a Google Experience Device, GED for short, you can expect it to be a fully stock build. There’s no timeframe for how long the OTA update will take to reach all test users, or when it will be ready for prime time, but we suspect the process should be completed in the next month or so.

For anyone who doesn’t want to wait, an update.zip has been released and is ready to be flashed. Unfortunately, the Motorola Xoom’s stock recovery doesn’t allow users to flash update.zip files. So if you want to experience ICS early, you’re going to have to install Clockwork Recovery. You can find more info about that here, just keep in mind that only you are responsible for what you do to your own device.

If anybody out there decides to take the plunge, be sure to share your experiences in the comments below. Everyone else, sit tight. It won’t be long now.

And if non US customers are treated the same way as with Android 3.2, then we will get ICS around July (this may sound like an exaggeration but it isn’t). Non US customers should stay clear of Motorola Android products because we are treated as second class customers.

Hopefully they’ll be a bit faster this time… If not, I’ll probably switch to a custom rom like I did on my smartphone. Hope there will be some good custom roms like CM for the Motorola Xoom.

Exactly! Motorola has the poorest non US support o ant tablet maker out there! i wish i could wait and expect an update soon but “previous history” tells us that it will be several months for canada..

it looks lik i will have to pull the trigger on rooting with a US ROM and then void my warranty. Thanks again for nothing Motorola.

I’m glad they are quick to push this out and trying to beat some other companies to getting ICS!

Just tried with my AUS Xoom WiFi – I get a “signature not verified” Error – I guess it is only US Xooms.

  • lokidokie

Finally! Though I’m a happy Team Eos user, so this doesn’t mean that much to me (except that the guys will pull some cool stuff from this release)

  • jordan

its actually not for 3g/4g xooms, only the US wifi xoom.

I installed on my wifi xoom and it runs like a brand new device. much more polished look. love the notification bar.

I hate be the one to point this out but thats a picture of a Xyboard, not a Xoom.
Now that’s cleared up…as a wife Xoom owner I AM SO PSYCHED

  • coolthecat

Not sure if you guys are aware of this or not but you can not download this update if you have an original xoom and a usb host cable. here is the link. http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/01/13/confirmed-motorolas-xoom-update-is-ice-cream-sandwich-rolling-out-to-some-thousands-of-xoom-wi-fi-owners-now/

Hmm why isnt the galaxy nexus getting this update yet? we need our bugs fixed.

  • yankeesusa

Is the xoom worth it? Someone is wanting to trade it to me and I’m trying to decide if to take it or not. I’ve heard good things but there are so many tablets I just don’t know.

  • karl

This update was just pushed to my wifi Xoom. Its very fast.

This is a very different project from the LTE software update. When registering for the LTE Xoom update via the survey forms, you can’t test the software unless you acknowledge that your device has been upgraded to LTE AND has LTE activated on it.

They keep insisting that they aren’t sure if this LTE software project is even going to pan out. Please, everyone, don’t get your hopes up for an ICS soak test on Verizon’s Xoom just yet.
