Official Android 4.0 ‘early access preview’ for HTC Sensation and Sensation XE now available

Early last week we reported that HTC would release an early access preview of the Android 4.0 build for the HTC Sensation and Sensation XE to a few hundred users in Europe. Today, the update has been released to the public thanks to the team at InsertCoin.

Since we don’t own a European HTC Sensation or Sensation XE, we have not been able to load the Android 4.0 update on any of our devices yet, so we’re not exactly sure what things looks like or what new functionality is included.

Keep in mind that loading a leaked RUU does come with a few risks (and may void your warranty). The software builds HTC has made available are still considered test releases, but should be stable enough to be used as every day drivers. If you don’t know what you are doing, we suggest you wait things out for a few more weeks until the official Android 4.0 OTA update is released to all HTC Sensation owners.

Below is an email which went out the HTC Elevate members today before the android 4.0 update was released:

Who here wants an ICE CREAM SANDWICH? We do! Hopefully you do, too. We're happy to announce the first round of software previews in HTC elevate and you are in the first group of folks who will be able to participate!

To get this rolling, we'll need you to tell us some information about your device. Once we have this info, assuming it's all 100% accurate, we'll be able to push ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) straight to you via HTC's software distribution server- like magic!

To get started, head into the ACTIVITY now.HTC Elevate ModeratorHTC Name

If you do happen to load the update on your device or are part of the HTC elevate program, leave us a comment below and let us know what you like or don’t like about it. We’re expecting ROM developers to tear the update apart and port it over to a dozen or more devices before Mobile World Congress wraps up next week.

I wanted to put this on my sensation but it turns out I have a sensation 4g…

    Sad james is sad :(

    • BiGMERF

Sorry buddy, you will still have it before tmo users

      • AnthonyRyan

Hopefully Tmo gets ICS out for us sensation users in a timely matter and not 3-8 months down the road

      • Jeff Pan

I am hoping T-Mobile Sensation 4G gets it by March end

      • http://keridel.blogspot.com keridel

Well the sensation 4g is a t mobile USA one but its rooted so I will just flash a custom rom on it.

      • alee

HTC listed the Sensation 4G getting ICS in March. As far add I can tell, only T-Mobile calls their version of the Sensation “4G”.

    • Captain Price

      there all 4g

      • alee

Actually, none of them are really 4G, but it seems that only T-Mobile USA sells it as the “Sensation 4G” as opposed to just the “Sensation”. HTC has promised ICS for the Sensation 4G in March, and I don’t believe that there’s anything other than the one that T-Mobile USA carries that it can be for.

  • AnthonyRyan

So the sensation is getting sense 4 ? I’ve heard rumors that since the ram was 768Mb it would be sense 3.6 .

    • runDerekrun

      It’s getting Sense 3.6 and Android 4.0.

I came close to snatching up the Sensastion for free from t-mobile on their President web-only sale, but was worried about it every getting ICS so I talked myself into waiting. I think the landscape could change drastically in the next 6 weeks, which is my drop dead date for getting a new device, so I’m waiting, waiting, waiting.

It’s a great phone, but I think you made the right call by skipping the sale. HTC HTC One S (Ville) is coming to T-Mobile and will be a much better device. Yes, it’ll cost a lost more than what Best Buy was charging for it, but it should keep you happy for at least 18 months.

      • Vance

Agreed, Nick. Stoked for the new HTC lineup!

    • spazby

      you did the right thing

my sensation cant handle sense as it is no way it handles 4.0

    • RunDerekRun

Honestly what phone can? Sense is a bloated mess.

      • dillybar

It maybe a bloated mess I agree. But any duo core device and most 2nd gen single core I would think can handle it.And if your sensation cant handle Sense you maybe you need a new one.

  • Matthew Rider

Was there a link to the rom that I missed?

  • http://mihai.discuta-liber.com/ tmihai20

Any of the phones released last year should be able to handle Sense 4.0. It’s up to HTC to release it on all of them. I thought Sensation (the first one) was on the ICS update list (and it is). I am happy they chose the 5 button layout on the home screen instead of the 3 buttons it has now. If I had a Sensation, I would try this preview.

I dont have sensation or xe. I only have a EVO 3D. When does htc plan to release a common rom for other smartphones???

  • carlos62

it would be nice if we could put android on a iphone

    • saif hindawy

hey mate but one of the problems with iphone is the fact that’s it’s built to be “user friendly” this simply means that it’s hardware sucks and would probably not be able to handle home-screens like htc sense or smasung touch wiz

ICE CREAM SANDWICH Sucks! Android 4.0.3 with Sens 3.6 Currently experiencing poor signal with limited to no 3G signal. They must fix it first! Not even sure how i will be able to download and replace existing Android 4.0.3 !!! Sad I enjoyed my HTC Sensation XE with GINGERBREAD! Now it’s frustrating!
