Instagram coming to Android “very soon,” reportedly better than iOS version

Okay, we know, we’ve said this before, and Instagram has been “coming soon” for quite some time now. This time, the words come straight from the horse’s mouth, as Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom announced yesterday at the South by Southwest Conference that the Android version of the insanely popular photo-sharing service would soon launch on Android.

The service has amassed a total of 27 million users on iOS, and expects similar successes on Android with Mr. Systrom calling it “one of the best Android apps you’ll ever see.” While certainly a lofty claim on Instagram’s part, Mr. Systrom went on to bolster that the Android version of Instagram is much faster than its iOS counterpart, and that the Android version is better in some ways than the iOS one.

We can’t help but get a bit excited for Instagram to finally launch. Sure, there are other applications out there that do similar things, but not ones that are so focused on social sharing and feature a user-base of 27 million people. The wait for Instagram should be over very soon, perhaps by the end of the month.

Who else is anxiously awaiting Instagram’s release? Or have you found another application to suit your photo-sharing needs?

Ehh… Not a big fan of instagram but then again I’ve never used it before so who knows I should check out what my friends with an iOS device loves this app so much

    • Jeff Pan

Yes there are similar apps on Android which can transform images, but what Instagram has and others not is a vibrant new social network of 27 million.

      • thekaz

There are similar apps, which is why I always wonder why iOS fans claim the apps on Android are not as good or not as polished. To me, this argument seems so 2 years ago. At the very least, Instagram will be one less app they can say this about.

And, like others, I am looking froward to the social aspect of it. Might make me use my phone’s camera a little more…

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

      Not a big fan…. yet you’ve never used it before… -_-

      • AnthonyRyan

I’ve seen my friends use it who have the iPhone and I’ve looked at it but never really got a feel of it myself I should of said that

    • jsweetser2

I will definitely give it a try, lots of friends are iPhone users and post insta-gram pics all the time. Will be glad when i can join them.

  • amgala

Even though there are a lot of camera filter apps already available for Android, I’ve been eagerly awaiting Instagram for the overall total package!

    • tmihai20

I only want to have it installed. I may use it for some special occasions. I must admit that the images obtained from the Instagram filters are looking really well :)

P.S.: Let the iPhone lovers express their opinion or forever shut their piece!

  • mmitchum

I’m definitely looking forward to this app. Not even 100% sure of what it does, but I have friends on the iOS version who love it. I want to see what all the buzz is about and I would love the opportunity to tout a better version on Android!

  • Iria

I’ve been using and loving Vignette for a long time and sometimes I play with Camera Zoom FX, HDR Camera and Pixlr-o-matic, they’re all good and fun, instagram will just be the sixth app in my Camera folder.
BUT! My boyfriend is quite obsessed with it so at least he will be happy :P

  • fletchtb

I will check out this app just to see what the excitement is about over in iOS land. As a long time Android user, I am a little offended at how long it has taken these guys to get an app out the door. I understand some apps will land on iOS first, but their complete disregard for getting into the Android platform is insulting.

I have the same feeling about Songify too, but that app is so cool, I’d forgive them in an instant. I only wish I could harass co-workers with new songs created on my phone instead of borrowing an iphone from a colleage in a neighboring cube.

#1 Songify hit in our office: Eat a Brownie You Fat Bastard!

    • Ironzey Lewis

Agreed. I already have filters and I don’t need or want another social network.
They took this long to take Android seriously I say they should pay.

    • honourbound68

Unfortunately (and this ad been reported on many sites), iOS users spend more money on apps than us Android users :( its good to hear though that this app will be better on Android than iOS

  • matt

Why would I need instagram when I have all the filters etc on my galaxy nexus and can as easily share it on yo any social network….

  • classic_hero

    its worth a try

  • Max.Steel

An app that makes people feel like their expert photographers because they added a sepia filter. lol.

    • Tony

You mean an app that let’s people share shots from their smartphones, allows them to add a filter, and provides a social network of sharing images.

  • BrotherG

I’m only excited about the social aspect, the filters are not a big deal to me since there are so many other apps that do the same. If twitter overhauled and added a photo only stream for that would probably kill instagram.

  • pitacrisps

I’ve got a ton of photo filter apps on my Phone, but none are as good as instagram. There is not one “total package” app on Android yet. I’m excited about this.

  • Stigy

I’m actually very excited about this. The majority of Android users assume we want it for the filters but I want it for the social networking portion of it. There are currently a ton of apps in the Google Play store that do filters and I have a lot of them on my phone, but none of them (besides Lightbox) are truly social.

I’m stuck sending pics to my iPod Touch and uploading to Instagram that way. Then using Instaroid on my Nexus to view my Feed but its not perfect. I have been waiting a long time for Instagram. A lot of my friends use Instagram and a lot of celebrities do as well so its awesome to follow all these people as well as following trends via photos.

With Twitter people you follow may just post 140-character statuses when a picture will do a lot better. Remember, a picture is worth 1,000 words so when each post has an included picture, it truly tells a story better than a bunch of words which were attempted to fit in 140 characters.

    • Chris

I genuinely don’t get why anyone cares about it. I don’t understand why I’d want to make my photos look like they were taken with a polaroid 40 years ago and I can already upload to fb, flickr, twitter etc as soon as I’ve taken the photo. What’s the point?

  • Chad

Didn’t Instagram tell us that they were “coming soon” to Android like a month or two ago? lol what exactly is coming soon from their perspective? I wonder what hiccups they’re having because I would have thought Instagram should have been here already. Just a thought.

  • pekosROB

I’m not that interested in it, just glad Android is finally getting a popular iOS app.

I give my friends hell that used to have an Android device and then I see a post with an Instagram pic. I ask them, “so when did you make the switch and why?” and give them as hard a time about it as possible.

    • ari-free

“I’m not that interested in it, just glad Android is finally getting a popular iOS app.”

Yup. We must try to advocate for popular apps, even apps we may personally never use in order for Android to remain relevant. Let’s not take anything for granted. Once upon a time, Netscape was #1, Palm Pilot was #1 and nobody cares about them anymore. It could also happen to Android if we live in a cave and only care about what we need.

  • spazby

never used it but curious to see what it offers…

  • Alex Belko

Everything is better on the bigger screen)) Somehow i feel stupid that I really want exactly Instagram app, good marketing I guess

  • westy

i guess the only thing im looking forward too is the unique filters they have and the better collage options. Not so sure what is so special about the sharing feature on their. People just share the pics on facebook anyways. Sooo i dont get it.

  • jmon

I will try just to try since I already have 6 camera apps installed on my phone. So I, personally, am not excited about the app but my gf is eagerly awaiting its release. But like what some of the other people are saying, there are quite a few camera apps with tons of filters already available in android. And pudding camera offers the social network and sharing of photos.

  • SGB101

another social network…. yipee , not.

    • CORYK333

Had to down vote bc of the “not”, sorry dude

  • cabrone

I’m all for this application. Sure, I’m not a hipster so I will never use it but it is good to see android getting some app love.

  • Ironzey Lewis

Too late, I’ve already got hipster filters.
Too late, I’ve already got Facebook, Twitter (ugh) and Google Plus.
They ignored Android for too long and I plan on ignoring them in return.

  • Eduardo

I have instagram on my iPod Touch I want in my razr, I love this App

  • Alexander drzfr3shboialex

Just like temple run, coming soon. Then it comes out when people lose interest :/ At least we’re getting it though.

  • Thorpeland

Im curious to see what all the hoopla is about. While Instagram was busy ignoring Android because they love iOS so much, a lot of decent photo apps have come out for Android. So basically they’ll really need to win me over with something spectacular.

  • http://None Javier Bastardo

I’ll believe this once the app is actually available. The app itself looks good and fun on iOS, but I’m not totally crazy for it. Still, will be nice to have it.

  • Paul Atreides

I’ll probably skip this app, I can share my pics a million ways already with Android.

  • OpenIntro

I’m so meh on this. a) they took WAY too long and b) there are better photo filter apps out there.

  • n25philly

If I use this can I be a douchy hipster too?

Meh, I take 99.999999999999% of my pictures with my DSLR anyway.

    • CORYK333

That was pure dopeness, well played sir

  • Ton Habraken

They ignored android for more then a year. I’ll do the same to them. Now there’s the hyped highlight which I will also ignore!! All the excuses about first wanting to scale has nothing to do with having an app on android or not. It is a backend thing.

  • androidindia

i use lightbox , kinda the same i guess :P

  • aconner22

I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembers how Instagram alienated a HUGE segment of the smartphone photography market. Don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked that we’re finally seeing movement on this, but it took way too long.

  • ddp

Nah, I’ll keep using Aviary’s Gallery plugin. Instagram effects without the network. That’s all I really wanted. There are some effects that come with ICS’s gallery, but there were a few missing that I’ve found in Aviary.

  • aranea

Meh! I don’t like to support app makers who focus on iOS so much before bringing to Android. I can somewhat understand releasing on iOS first but the Android version should follow quickly and wouldn’t be lacking in function. If they wait too long or release a half-baked version I tend not to use them later unless I have to. This falls into this category.

  • Hall Lo

Look forward to use it on an Android near me!

  • disassembler

I use Vignette on my Android devices, but I’ve wanted an Instagram account for a while now. I’m really excited to see what the Android version will be like.

  • nay

    Yessssssssssss give us instagram

  • donger

Can’t wait. I have been used Lightbox which is like instagram.

    • DroidPower

have you tried Camera Zoom FX? i find it much better than lightbox

  • smeghead68

Never heard of it, but then again i don’t use these types of services much. 27million users…Wow, might be worth checking out.

  • jonathan3579

From what I have seen or heard, it’s less about the application (although many people swear by it) and more about the whole Instagram community. I doubt there will be anything to woo me but it’s good to have options and also have one more thing that the damn iSheep can’t say we don’t have.

  • pekosROB

Is someone trolling posts? I’ve never seen so many -1′s on this site.

    • jonathan3579

It looks like it. I have been getting them left and right. Lol.

      • pekosROB

        Just gave you a +1

        • jonathan3579

          Gotcha covered, sir! Thanks! :)

          Someone has definitely been busy!

    • aranea

Totally agree. Instagram must have agents among us, probably an iphone user, giving people -1′s for anything negative about ingstagram.

      • pekosROB

Just gave you a +1 to even you out to zero!

      • CORYK333

Actually seems like the comments in favor of the app are getting downvoted. Gonna go out on a limb & say we have an Android troll that is taking an app devs decisions a bit too personally….i know, its hard to believe /s……Use it or dont use it, but its this is good for the android platform. The more high profile apps, the better. We dont want to become Palm/Blackberry, now do we!??! Plus the dev seems to be quite proud of how the app turned out, so i highly doubt itll be a “half-baked” version.

  • MrDSL

I really don’t understand the point of this app..Can’t you just share photos on FaceBook?

  • goodythreeshoes

Make sure we will still be able to conect with ios users

  • Oakland

Oh so it is actually coming huh?
For now with a few free apps and a creative mind you an make better photos than Instagram.
    Check it out.
